one of your better reviews of late. Well done. It could have benefited from a little more footage of the yacht inside and out, as your editor is still a fan of showing your face (vs. showing the boat). What does the aft cabin look like, the heads, etc. And a few details about how she sailed in 30Kts of blow would be nice too.
I like Toby and Yachting World but the criticisms here are valid... I realized some time ago that no aircraft were getting bad reviews nor any car in any of the magazines. I then bought a Ford based on good reviews and discovered that owning it was very different to driving it. I am confident that this Jeanneau is a fine machine but these are not proper reviews. If anyone is interested, where I come from in Australia there is "Aussie Auto Expert" who used to be the editor of one or more of the car magazines. Now he is off the chain and telling the truth about a lot of stuff to do with cars. I now contrast him with the journos reliant on advertising dollars...
Marvellous yacht, love the innovative features like the liferaft in cockpit table. Shame +Chantiers Jeanneau haven't extended many of these features to a 45' model. If Jeanneau had a 45DS with at least a drop down transom, it would be right up there on our shortlist of yachts for next year's sail around the world. With only two months to go till we place our order, shortlist remains Dufour 460, Hanse 455 and Bavaria 46...
Some of the comments are laughable. Presentation of the Jeanneau was useful. This Yacht would handle bluewater with no problem. If your looking for a Pros and Cons Practical Sailor would be your go to. Hard to knock any new cruiser nowadays. If so would be minor details. Toby presented well for a quick look at this Yacht.
Nice review Toby. Wow a 54' with only 2 cabins. Perfect for me and my wife. I would have loved a peek into that 2nd cabin and the two heads. I have never been in a boat with a galley way aft like that. Makes a lot of sense, but I can't help thinking the person doing the cooking would feel disconnected from everyone else in the salon while sitting at anchor/at the dock.
I'd sooner have the cabin space, as I've a son & a daughter so they need their own rooms - plus I like to chat with people while I cook, keep an eye on the TV & all that.
@@yachtingworld No need to be condescending. I only noticed the calm scenes on board were likely shot on different days and under different circumstances than the long shots of the boat in the gale. Different days, hence the different clothing.
Not up to the standard of some other Yachting World videos, one which I saw about a Jeanneau 48 or 52, which was pretty comprehensive. I thought some of the other comments were interesting like the size of the fuel tanks on the Jeanneau compared with the Amel 54. I now know why there is a difference. I was confusing a review by Yachting Monthly which was very good compared this Yachting World review of the Jeanneau 54. Enough said.
The odd shaped mattress...how comfortable can that be and where do you go for a replacement? Not like you can go buy any old queen size mattress and put it in there.
As much as I want to appreciate production boats they are so impersonal and look as if the interiors come from Ikea. Maybe its a good starting place, certainly fine for bareboating, but not as a home away from home.
I feel these reviews are no longer reviews. This comes across as a sales pitch lots of flash but nothing useful. No mention of how it preformed only about a nice spot to sit. Bring back the other guy he would actually point out flaws or things that would be a issue.
Such a tease, making us wait for the July issue to get more information on this. I love the two berth layout with an aft galley, Jeanneau might be on to something here. Is there a hard date for the article release?
240 Liter fuel tank on a 55ft 17t yacht? An Amel 55 carries 900 liters of fuel. A Hallberg Rassy 55 the same, 900 liters. Jeanneau boats are easy to spot, they're the ones with a dozen gerry cans of diesel on deck.
Steve Evans I am sorry but I disagree with you. I purchased the 51 which is almost the same boat but a few feet shorter. She is a real sailing boat and in one year I have clocked up some heavy weather passages in comfort. A different animal than my previous Hallberg Rassy but she feels a safe, fast and stable boat. Personally I wouldn’t go back to a traditional shaped hull.
Even your average beneteau 35 is CE cat. A, so made for offshore sailing. So im guessing this would be cat. A as well, because nobody would actually buy i if it wasnt

I can't imagine cooking under way in that "galley". WAY too many sharp edges. Every time Toby walked by that upper cabinet, I kept cringing thinking he's going to take one in the temple. I also don't get the idea of hanging off the back of the boat to helm it and in any kind of a following sea, as it would not be a very pleasant place to be. Granted most of these will only see the channels between the islands in the BVI's but it seems a bit much to call it a cruiser or being able to handle the "rough stuff" when it has very obvious flaws like that.
The most important feature is a huge dodger that will be blown away with first strong wind/wave overboard.. This guy needs to do luxury homes review not sailboats..
Rum Reach there speaks the man of authority, these Bimini are rated up to and over 40 knots of wind, anyway any boat spray hood or Bimini would need to come down in very severe weather. Obviously for armchair sailors it’s not an issue.
Sea slug. Maintenance nightmare. Condemned to single digit speeds forever. For the same dough, invest in a FC3 53 or Pogo 50 since we are talk'in French here.

Toby is neither pompous, nor pretentious. Are you perhaps judging him on his accent? Some people might consider that racist. Basing a decision on whether to buy a boat on a review (especially by someone who isn't even employed by the boat manufacturer) is a bizarre and silly statement and very difficult to believe.
Toby does such a great job presenting these boats, its good to listen to some one that knows what they are talking about.
We understand that the review person is always going to really like most of the boat stuff. It's how the review person is able to get aboard.

Galley aft is a fantastic idea. Especially if you know you will not need that cabin space. Basically they made their living area much bigger.

How do these actually sail? Do they go upwind well?
You never mentioned speed .. how fast did she make in those winds ? Looks 10-11 knots maybe ?
Im happy to see J. has been kept up to scratch , It was & still looks like a R/R to Bentley (Beneteau) all ways that little better
Helmsman has orange jacket in the distant shots and black only in the close ups.
Er, that's a lifejacket! Two days, one light, one heavy - lifejacket worn during heavier weather

what was the speed over ground in 30knts beam reaching and close hauled?
Have you sailed both the shoal and deep keel versions? How significant was the performance difference?
Jeanneu is a major advertiser in Yachting World. Therefore Jeanneau boats, as well as Beneteaus and Bavarias have no flaws at all. Do you understand ?
No dinghy garage, but you can store your dinghy on top of sunbathers...
I would need davats to hold dingy..and solar, and wind vane..

que
Memory foam mattress, a bread knife and about thirty minutes would take care of it.
You can order custom foam cuts from a lot of websites actually
I do like some of the features in the new boats, but the interiors are way too clinical looking.
Jeanneau is not overpriced and has a great set of 'essential' features. You get more boat for your money, but less 'custom'.
The fellow almost hit his head a few times while describing how clever the galley was.
where you to bud? I love your reviews!
Have a look at Elley Grey a grp St.Malo pilot cutter replica from 1896 , delivered 2012 better built better equipped simply stunning and for sale .

The July issue came out this week Mike!
Would of been a perfect boat for me if it had a dinghy tender instead of it hanging off the back. The galley aft is so good for couples
To exposed if sailing in bad weather. Amel enclosed is better but I'll still stay with my MY and a fully enclosed living and sailing area.
Galley looks dangerous with those eye level projections
Also if you were sailing solo, the galley is too tucked away from the helm.I would be paranoid about cooking enroute.
Beautiful boat but put some color
in the sails there as bleak as the day.
my question is .. is it ready to take on long distance bluewater cruising?
