It’s funny that now one of the big reasons for French people to learn Esperanto is the fear of the English language creeping into France and they want to defend the French language. Sort of backfired that plan really, didn’t it :)

Evildea, I'm somewhat disappointed in you. As a malign deity, I'd think you would be delighted that the French were successful in scuttling Esperanto at the League of Nations, whether or not you had a hand in the proceedings.
Seriously, thank you for making this video. I may have known a bunch of this before, since "La Danĝera Lingvo" was one of the first books I ever read in Esperanto, but that was over 40 years ago and you know what they say, the memory is the second thing to go.
I think you hit the nail on the head with regard to poor people learning Esperanto. To put all this into historical context, in the early 1920s the Russian Revolution had just happened, and the elites of the world were spooked. They were afraid the working class in their own countries would revolt and confiscate their wealth and possibly their scalps. Anything that aided in this effort, like, oh, say an easy-to-learn international second language they could use to communicate and organize across national and cultural barriers, was a threat.
It didn't help that Lenin was willing to use any tool in the toolbox to spread his version of Marxism around the globe, and that included Esperanto. Also keep in mind that the Sennacieca Asocio Tutmonda (SAT, or World Anationalist Association) was formed around this time as an international organization dedicated to uniting the working class through Esperanto. (They're still around, by the way, and still talking the talk, although a lot of their effort in recent years has gone into projects like maintaining the Complete Illustrated Dictionary of Esperanto (la Plena Ilistrita Vortaro).)
Given all that it's easy to imagine a bunch of behind-the-scenes diplomacy going on with a cadre of high muckety-mucks telling other high muckety-mucks to squash this Esperanto thing by any means necessary. Honestly, haters jeer that Esperanto is a failure for (fill in the blank with your favorite bogus reason) but when you look back at the history of Esperanto the fact that it's survived at all, much less used daily by hundreds of thousands of people, is nothing short of a miracle.
Finally, if you're so inclined, one of these days could you do a similar presentation on how Uruguayan Esperantists managed to get UNESCO to adopt the Montevideo Resolution in spite of itself, which led to the UEA proudly proclaiming to this day that it has "consulting relations with UNESCO and the UN"?

Good video, I love this stuff. From the point of view of other planned languages this announcement by the League of Nations was a pretty big deal, because it was the first time since the Delegitaro in 1907 that a fairly influential group of people was looking at the subject. Edgar de Wahl kind of missed the opportunity in 1907 (because he hadn't gotten Occidental quite right - he hadn't put De Wahl's rule together yet) and only sent a small set of criteria for what he believed an international language should be, that was mentioned by Couturat once or twice and then shelved.
So when 1921 came about he still wasn't quite done with Occidental (still hadn't figured out -atu and some other suffixes) but close enough that he decided to announce it and start publishing Kosmoglott. Meanwhile a lot of others were submitting their ideas and projects at the same time.

Privat is a pretty cool guy too, who got along with the Occidentalists and was mentioned a lot in Cosmoglotta. One of them even drew a picture of him:

I remember some quotes about what the French said about Esperanto at the time but not enough to find them again. Something about how it harmed civilisation itself. So yeah, totally overboard.

Wow! Very interesting video! I wonder why members of an international peace keeping organization would not want to have an international language..... Darn ulterior motives! It's sad that many 'intellectuals' have strong prejudice against the poor. i imagine we'd ave a more harmonious world if that weren't the case.

Interesting story! Where can I find Esperanto books like La Danĝera Lingvo? I would guess that most book stores wouldn't have them...

The first edition has some chaptera that didn't make it into the second edition, because it would have too many pages to offer it for an acceptable price. The second edition however has some new material.
You can find Esperanto books like "La Danĝera Lingvo" in bookstores de multaj landoj or at your Esperanto-association. For instance the TEACH YOURSELF by J. Cressswell and J. Hartley.

Ĉiun vorton en la franca oni akcentu en la lasta silabo, kaj ĝenerale la lastan konsonanton oni ne elparolu: tial "Privat" iĝas "pri-VA'". Estas mirinde, ke tiel komplika lingvo estis kvazaŭ la tiama internacia komunikigilo, samkiel la angla hodiaŭe, ĉu ne?) :-)

Laŭ mi, oni devas memori ke tiutempe la tuta mondo forte timiĝis la Komunistojn (la ruĝa alarmo). La rusa civila milito, kiu finiĝis en oktobro 1922, rezultis en kompleta venko por la bolŝevikoj. Politikistoj tre timis ion ajn, kiun la malriĉuloj subtenis. Kaj ĉi tiu nova strangaĵo, Esperanto, ankaux estas internacia movado!
I think it's worth remembering that, at that time, the whole world was in the grip of the Red Scare. The Russian Civil War, which ended in October 1922, resulted in complete victory for the Bolshevists. Politicians feared anything which the poor supported. And this strange "new" thing, Esperanto, was also an international movement!

C'est très amusante car l'ésperanto faisait du français. Beaucoup de mots sont très similaire comparé à l'anglais.
