  • The original Electronic QJet had been removed from my 1984 Z28 so I wanted to check if the spark timing was affected. Also checked my stock Cutlass 442 with a dial back timing light.

When setting timing does the dial need to be on 0? Or dial to the number that the timing needs to be set at?

Turn the dial until the mark hits 0 on the timing tab on the engine.. The number on the light shows what degree it’s set at.

You need to disconnect the est. bypass when checking the base timing. it should be a 1 wire connector with a tan wire. it should drop your timing and you can adjust it to spec. if the Camaro was really at 18 degrees the engine would be pinging and knocking. You are looking at timing advanced by the computer the way you are doing it. I believe its by the heater fan on the firewall.

I had a little confusion about this. Apparently, the base 305 has the tan 1 wire connector as you described. This car is the L69 HO 305, which does not have that. The right way to do it, as I just found out, is to disconnect the 4-wire connector behind the distributor. When I did that, the base timing was 12.5 at 750 rpm. The factory spec is 6 degrees at 600 in drive. I have to find a helper to check that. Thanks for the info.

Would you be able to make a video on the vacuum lines of the camaro? That would be very helpful

When the original carb was removed, so were a lot of the vacuum lines. Which ones did you need to see? If you need a diagram I might have one.

@@nowherefastgarage I was kinda hoping for an overall diagram, specifically for the 5.0L (manual transmission) in the 1989 rs, however, I'm not sure how similar that would be to the 84 Z28?

@@Aerozona23 is that fuel injected? I’m thinking that’s going to be different. I don’t have a diagram for that one. There is usually a white sticker somewhere in the engine compartment with the vacuum hose routing diagram.

If you’re getting ANY mechanical advance with an increase in RPM, that isn’t the factory CCC distributor. The factory distributor has zero mechanical advance capabilities. Maybe someone put a standard HEI in it and removed the vacuum advance can. Either way, a vacuum advance will help with driveability and fuel mileage tremendously, as most people don’t know how to properly set up the mechanical advance on a distributor (total advance, rate of advance, etc).

Its got 4 wires coming out of the back - looks like purple, brown, black and white. So the CCC system must be controlling it.
