This would have been perfect on OK Computer, a great closing track. Everyone around them at the time said they had a hit on their hands, so they dropped it like a hot stone, how typically them. We love them for it of course and hate them for it in equal measure.
I literally shed a tear when I saw the article with the 20th anniversary release of OK Computer.. I have literally been waiting for Lift to be released for about a decade. I had given up and almost forgotten about it.
Gotta tell ya, I've listened to the older recording of this song for about 15 years now and it's fantastic, but the clean up you've done on this whips the rams ass sir
So disappointed that it's not on the new album. I know I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up but there may still be hope. I did see that the special edition vinyl comes with a CD with 2 unreleased tracks out in September. This is the best recorded version of this song. I'm sure if they did record it they would mix the background vocals down which would be a disappointment. I remember reading that the song was ditched because no one knew their parts. This song lives on and even better now. Great Job on cleaning it up.
Thanks so much for this! I just love how you can hear everything going on in the background. I just wish that at 3:05 Thom sang another "let it go!" like he does in another '96 recording. It makes that part just a tad less impactful for me.
This is the place Sit down You're safe now You've been stuck In a lift We've been trying To reach you Thom This is the place It won't hurt It won't hurt now The smell of air conditioning A face you barely loved Empty all your pockets Because it's time to come home This is the place Remember me You're afraid, it always seems You've been stuck In a lift In the belly of a whale At the bottom of the ocean The smell of air conditioning A face you barely loved Empty all your pockets Because it's time to come home The smell of air conditioning A face you barely loved Let it go Today is the first day of the rest of your days So lighten up squirt
While I'm glad they finally got a studio version out, it's totally missing the power and emotion that you can feel in the live versions they played in the 90s. And tbh, this mastered version feels more full than the OKNOTOK version. And c'mon, they toned down Ed's part way too much :/
First of all this is AMAZING... thank you very much! However the lyrics in your description are a little off, it's "the fish are belly up" not "a face you barely loved."
I'm so sorry to mention this (honestly I think the other lyrics you posted are better), but I've heard the actual lyrics are "smell of air conditioning, the fish are belly up". I know, ignorance is bliss.
Not sure if you still have it or not, but would you mind linking me a copy of the actual remastered file? RUclips just degrades the quality quite a bit.
Why didn't they ever record this? It'd wouldn't be as great if they recorded it now rather than during the OK Computer era not that there's anything wrong with Thoms voice now i just don't think it'd fit in with their newer material.
Never lose your faith in them, look how they transformed True Love Waits from that The Bends era sound for A Moon Shaped Pool... They're gonna give us a proper studio recording of it when the time is right.
The initial sound and style of the guitar at the beginning reminds me of Kiss Me, by Six Pence Non The Richer. Part of the chorus vocal melody reminds me of a Smashing Pumkins song from the album Siamese Dream. I can see why they would of thought it would of propelled them into a level of fame that's cringe worthy, it would of made them pop stars instead of bonfide rockstars. Glad they didn't mare a perfect album w this tune, it's not bad, but it's nothing compared to everything else they'd released up until then, and doesn't fit in Ok Computer. I think it would of stifled, or pigeonholed them into a style they would of grown to hate. This song is more like Pablo Honey w minute electro splashes of Ok, and a more toned down anthemic rock of the bends. Nothing jarring to the ear, or super complex.
TheDayOfTheDog nowadays i think it's just not my cup of tea. my favorite record of theirs is 'The King of Limbs' so that could be why i'm not so keen on the guitar days
+montageofheck fair enough. I think Kid A is/was the best thing they've done so I get all that. But I wouldn't complain if their next album was comprised of 10 songs that sounded just like Anyone Can Play Guitar, hahaha...
ITS FUCKING COMING TWENTY YEARS!
They're releasing this track on the OK Computer 20th Anniversary release!!!
Can't wait for the album!
Sir, you deserve an award for this.
Thank you :')
+Ty L have you ever listened to Yellow by Coldplay? Coldplay ripped this off, so they won't add this.
Yeah, the EQ work on this is phenomenal. Is there any way you can email me the .WAV file? Thanks!
ffsf739
I had this on MP3 in he late 1990s. I felt very special. How things move on.
Reminds me of how much I loved the live version of Videotape they played at bonnaroo 2006
This would have been perfect on OK Computer, a great closing track. Everyone around them at the time said they had a hit on their hands, so they dropped it like a hot stone, how typically them. We love them for it of course and hate them for it in equal measure.

Beautiful song. Reminds me a little bit of Rhinoceros by Smashing Pumpkins.
It really really does.
good call!
mf103 Mayonaise a little bit too I think.
Absolutely. Definitely a lot of Siamese Dream influence in the song.
Mayonaise and Hummer too.
their new album wait is driving me nuts
There's not even a single to keep us happy while we wait dammit
Yeah man and Spectre doesn't count for anything at all

I like specter too but it doesnt say where the album might e going at all is what im saying. Yes! Desert island disk and silent spring are amaxing
Thanks so much for this! I just love how you can hear everything going on in the background. I just wish that at 3:05 Thom sang another "let it go!" like he does in another '96 recording. It makes that part just a tad less impactful for me.
This is extremely beautiful. Thank you so much.
Se decía que iba a venir en su nuevo disco. Recuerdo que estuve muy feliz bajo esa ilusión.

Good work, you honestly have a better version than the official.
Oh My! This is so close to the OKNOTOK version! Great Work cleaning this up, Sir! :)
You did an awesome work on this! I hope the OKNOTOK version remains faithful to the feeling of the original performance.

Y’all are so picky lmao I’m just glad they released it at all if anything

This is the place
Sit down
You're safe now
You've been stuck
In a lift
We've been trying
To reach you Thom
This is the place
It won't hurt
It won't hurt now
The smell of air conditioning
A face you barely loved
Empty all your pockets
Because it's time to come home
This is the place
Remember me
You're afraid, it always seems
You've been stuck
In a lift
In the belly of a whale
At the bottom of the ocean
The smell of air conditioning
A face you barely loved
Empty all your pockets
Because it's time to come home
The smell of air conditioning
A face you barely loved
Let it go
Today is the first day of the rest of your days
So lighten up squirt
I hope it won't be too different on the new album
its basically exactly the same on this new release lmao

The smell of air conditioning/The fish are belly up - FTFY
Impressive wowowowow... where did you learn how to master this well
This version is so old its like listening to Pablo Honey. I hope they put a 21st Century detail into it.
*_* Thx
First of all this is AMAZING... thank you very much! However the lyrics in your description are a little off, it's "the fish are belly up" not "a face you barely loved."
is the third unrelease song in ok not ok, sure that
I'm so sorry to mention this (honestly I think the other lyrics you posted are better), but I've heard the actual lyrics are "smell of air conditioning, the fish are belly up". I know, ignorance is bliss.
"vastly inferior 2002 version"?!?! You are ut of your mind, son!
"I L U"
NOT ON new lp :(
I thought the same :'/
You must be happy now
Very excited, bro!!

존나 좋다
Can you do the same with Big Boots, please? :c I can't find anywhere a remastered version :c
2018 anyone?
1997OKNOTOKCOMPUTER2017
you did an excellent EQ job here. I wonder how the studio version will sound like.
Not sure if you still have it or not, but would you mind linking me a copy of the actual remastered file? RUclips just degrades the quality quite a bit.
No, no it doesn't actually -- or not to the point that you'd notice. (I'm an audio engineer)
Is there anyway I can get any type of audio file for this exact copy? Cheers.
you can yes...I found out yesterday you can convert youtube videos to audio files..I can send you link if you want..if you see this message
is there any download for this?
search vid to mp3, works great, some sites are better than others, some are junk too, best of luck
OKNOTOK

Ben chambers that might be why they didn't put lift in recent album. Without overall variation of how lift sounds, it doesn't fit at all.
Never lose your faith in them, look how they transformed True Love Waits from that The Bends era sound for A Moon Shaped Pool... They're gonna give us a proper studio recording of it when the time is right.
they did record it. now it's mastered and set to be released.
and how am i supposed to check out your band if none of the videos is available? :/
Oh whoops! Sorry, I should post a link to Bandcamp and stuff.

We just released a new album yesterday!
+Ty L woah, man, it sounds pretty fucking awesome! I'll buy it when I get a job (btw sorry if my english is not perfect blah blah)
+Alonso Mancini Thanks a bunch!!! (No worries, your english is good)

ok not ok
Z 🐼
I think Radiohead was smarter than their label execs because this song is lackluster at best.
I honestly hope this is not on the new one, it's not that good. Give me 'Follow Me Around'
this tune is quintessential Radiohead m8
You're crazy. This song destroys
TheDayOfTheDog nowadays i think it's just not my cup of tea. my favorite record of theirs is 'The King of Limbs' so that could be why i'm not so keen on the guitar days

TheDayOfTheDog Have you hear 'Silent Spring' yet? It's definitely going on a dog leg from TKOL sound, perhaps in a folkier direction
way over EQd
