  • Hello once more fellow Doomers, I kindly invite you to join me on another adventure, courtesy of the awesome Squonker Team. The WAD we're going to explore is called Tetanus, a 2023, 10-level, vanilla-compatible set which was one of the runner-ups at the 2023 Cacowards. Its Doom Wiki page describes it as containing "an "Orange Box" aesthetic, inspired by designs from various Source engine games, as well as Super Mario Odyssey's "Steam Gardens." Its levels are centered around clean, easily readable level design, with a gimmick of telegraphed pathways and encounters". I don't know about you but this sounds like something which is right up my alley. Let's play some more Tetanus!

    Additional notes
    ---------------------------
It's the big one - it's time to feast, whether we're talking about ourselves or the monsters. Bobbylol's frantic ending to Tetanus delivers again and again with its fantastic sense of urgency, the rush of the demons needing to be matched by the rush of the player in dealing with them. Bobby notes that "I am shocked with how explosive and vertical this map came out [...] The mapping idea I made at the last second is all about using the RL and PR for contrasting purposes". It is indeed the case that the focus on weapon slots 5 and 6 presents some challenges in some of the more congested scenarios like that tight lift trap with the mancs, or the brutal triple archie ambush in the descending elevator before you grab the blue keycard. It all comes to a head, of course, in the massive brawl at the end, where it's imperative to not get blocked by the cacos and elementals and to cut through the imp hordes as soon as possible and kill the last viles while cyber rockets are flying around. Beautiful work by Korp as well with that awesome track. GG.
P.S. There is a megasphere hidden behind some crates in the final fight and I have no clue how to get it, maybe with an arch-vile jump but it seems close to impossible in those intense conditions. Frustrating not only for completion purposes, but due to its usefulness as well. If anyone has any reasonable idea, let me know.

What a way to end Tetanus, with a big slaughterfest and an amazing Korp MIDI in the form of Pattern 32!

Just finished playing this on the Unity port. Really curious about the fake yellow door and unreachable exit switch. Also manged to crash the game noclipping through some of those out of reach areas at the end.

@@Ashura96 It's possible that this map is unfinished (though it certainly doesn't feel like it) and that there were plans to create more areas which never came to be. Don't know what to say about the crash since I haven't encountered any in source ports when I played the regular version. Once this definitive version is out for everyone I'm sure there will be more thorough testing and reporting in order to figure out if it's a map problem (say, a node builder issue) or a port-specific thing.

    No yellow key?

@@SofaCitySweetheart No, this map is kinda unfinished in the sense that you can fly around with noclip and see areas that were planned but are not accessible.

    How to get the Megasphere?

Arch-vile jump apparently, as I wrote in the description. It was discussed in the DW thread as well. I don't realistically think it's possible with the clusterfuck going on there, and the boost from one archie jump seems insufficient anyway. Sigh. I'm sure someone else will do it.

@@dreadwanderer there are a few archviles that don't wake up until you find them, you could theoretically use them to archvile jump but it kinda sucks

@@goSuOtarU I know, so far I have not seen a 100% items run of this map, it just feels like too much of a gamble.
