I was a US Civil War living historian and my regiment used the 53 Enfield, both in the real regiment and in our impression. Awesome weapon that has an entire additional history in the US and elsewhere in the world.
Indeed!
So very Canadian and so very entertaining. Excellent information and entertainment as always, Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This winter was more...difficult to put up with than usual. Refreshing to see you're also battling cabin fever.
Oh y’all too? We’re having our usual every-10-years “record breaking snowfall” winter here in Alaska. Two commercial building roof collapses in Anchorage so far.
Thankfully the Challenge helps with that!
I've really missed Rob producing lots of smoke, noise and flame from his shooting stick :-)
As for the cameo by Mrs.Rob - I hope one returned her tea cosy in time for a nice bracing cuppa at the end of the day.
Yes indeed!
This intro was excellent sir!! Mackenzie might be an old grumbler (so too was Napoleon's old guard) but he's been in the army for quite a while now and made a career of it. I wonder if someone had dealt with a similarly accented Quebecois sergeant back in his army days.
Perhaps?
It would be nice to learn French already if you are Canadian. Ce serait bien d'apprendre déjà le français si vous êtes canadien.😂
That really is a nice rifle.
I had a reproduction "Zouave" rifle, .64 if I remember. Minnie bullet.
I used to use Crisco for lube on a muslin patch. Worked pretty well.
That rifle shot like a dream.
Man, you do a fine job in these videos, and your uniforms are incredible.
Nice!
I am afraid I would be saying "eh wot?"...with that French nco jibbering away...
But I do like potatoes!...
Great video!
Hahaha! Cheers!
Very well done sir, you managed that kick turn without doing yourself an injury in the gentlemans area
I stretched before hand.....
As a Canadian this was amazing LMFAO.
Cheers!
As Rob noted, but worth mentioning:
- Cabin Fever Challenge is open to ANYONE who can safely handle a firearm, regardless of your local weather
- Divisions exist for everything from Black Powder, to rimfire, to modern semi-autos
- BritishMuzzleLoaders is renown for excellent production quality, but all that is required is a cell phone camera
I highly recommend checking out other CFC entries (from this year or previous years) and get out there and try it yourself!
(PS: Nice shooting, filming, and editing Rob!)
Yes indeed!
TABERNAC! Great video as always. Having a grumble of a work day and I cracked up thanks to the Good Sergeant at the start of the video.
Glad to hear!
Would drag out my original P53 ,to try my new Pritchard mould ( original too)… But it’s just too damn hot today in the far north of New Zealand… thanks as always.
Straight beeswax will survive the heat!
One of these days you are going to need to upload a video of you just peeling potatoes. Those delicious apples of the earth.
Why peel them?!
@@SonOfTheDawn515 Indeed.
Eat the tatties skins an' aw'.
@@SonOfTheDawn515 If you're making mashed potatoes you really don't want the skin. Baked you want the skin, roasted either way.
Haha!
You can't just run off with your wife's tea cosy like that.
Mind you there is the Billy Connolly observation. "Never trust someone who doesn't try to wear a tea cozie, when they are the only one in the room"
If my better half is anything to go by she'll have a spare. Maybe two.
I picked one of two,.... the other one had ruffles on it... not soldierly enough...
Hazzar hazzar top bloke that you are
Bravo on fight the weather to do this video
The kick turn is a bugger but did have a chuckle 🤣 sorry my bad
Excellent video hazzar hazzar 😁😁😁😁
Please, do have a laugh at my expense...!
There is more snowshoe content that p53rifle great video mate
Yes. Cheers!
“Not your snowshoe! Your SNOWSHOE!” 😂😂😂
Yes!
Beautiful job mate, love those pesky snowshoes. Cheers from a much colder fort mac!!
Stay warm!
How thoughtful for the good Sergeant to make Private Mackenzie a sweater!
I know!
Thank you for caring enough to use the correct names of First Nations Peoples. (And a whole lot of everything else.)
All of it has context.
Good to see some new britishmuzzleloaders content.
Cheers!
Fantastic! The effort put into your videos is both humbling and inspiring! 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you so much 😀
That French accent at the beginning, reminds me of my grandfather, who was French-Canadian and his parents never spoke of a word of English. He couldn't pronounce anything with a "th" in it, like thumbtack. Always that hard "t".
All in good fun!
Well done!
Rob, if you like shooting muskets while on snowshoes you should come to the primitive biathlons in Vermont next year.
Every year there are a handful of competitions around Vermont and New Hampshire. The competition is a timed run (march?) on snowshoes of a mile and a half. There are four shooting stations, nine shots total. You are shooting at metal gongs, and each hit knocks five minutes off your time.
People compete in modern clothes or 17th/18th/19th c outfits, using everything from matchlocks to percussion rifles.
There are generally other stationary shooting competitions as well.
I think you’d have a (round) ball.
Sounds like a great time!
I was waiting for the new video. Very nice, great shooting in the snow.
Well, here you are. I hope you enjoyed it!
Oh no I feel the valcartier coming out send help there are too many French MCpls yelling at me
Haha!
Poor McKenzie... Reminds me of my M1863 Springfield! Dont worry, I won't be loaning it to any irishmen wanting to invade Canada.
Glad to hear!
I would hope not! :)😂
"Embuggerance" is a word not used often enough!
Hear! Hear!
Time you say? nay good sir nay, McKinzie Marches On. and on. and on some more. ^~^
Yup.
Love hearing “The Road to the Isles” in the background. Takes me back to hearing the band of the Royal Highland Fusiliers play it over 60 years ago.
Great tune!
Great shooting Rob
Thanks V!
Who is the French intern? He is...An odd one. XD
That slow-mo caught me off guard and was a good chuckle.
Yes,.. quite odd.
I’d love to try this with my 1861 Springfield. The P53 and the Springfield back at it again.
Do it!
Cheers mate from hot Australia
Hey-ho!
Just when you thought Mckenzie's day get any worse he has to deal with the sergeant's counterpart
I know!
Nicely shot. I always enjoy watching your participation in this challenge Rob, good to see you shoot it with the P53.
Cheers!
Sargent LePew is tough.
Yup.
Fantastic as usual. I love Mrs Rob's cameos.
That's twice she's caught me with her tea cozy.
@@britishmuzzleloaders I remember the time she came looking for her food dehydrator too. 🤣
Greetings from the snow bound south Okanagan sir, thanks for another great video. It's surely been "one of those" winters here in BC it seems. All the best and thanks again.
Most welcome!
I've loved this kind of content for years. Someday, Canada will probably outlaw his collection and efforts. But for now, it isn't here yet. Amazing content and rifles. Enjoy the days it still existed -I do.
Let's not dwell too long on that.....
@@britishmuzzleloaders
Agreed. But seriously, your content is next to none. Apologies for being a downer. Just keep going and doing your thing.
Ah. I miss my original P1853. I shot it with cartridges made up to the original pattern too. Had to get a custom mould for the bullet.
Nice!
I almost bought a .577 Enfield carbine at auction, 10' years ago, that was advertised as being original and possibly, Confederate!
But, they only wanted $600 and I became suspicious that it was a DeFarbed Parker-Hale replica. Then I almost bought an Atlanta Cutlery/Nepal Arsenal original but those were all corroded junk
I have Enfield Pritchett pattern bullets in my collection dug at various CW battlefields, mainly Vicksburg and Shiloh....
😎👍🇺🇸🇨🇦🇺🇦
Very cool!
This is the definitive sign that winter will soon be over.
Haha! Right after the ground hog...
I just bought one of these that was untouched from International Military antiques. It still had the original sling and the barrel was not pitted. After I restore it I will have it checked out by a gunsmith to make sure it is in firing condition.
Nice!
Poor MacKenzie. The weather just didn't cooperate. Good choice wearing trousers this year though. 😉
Dry bum!
Outstanding! I plan to try with my 1859 chasseur carbine with its thumping service cartridge. I doubt I will do so well 😅
Looking forward to it! Great to have good solid historical entries for sure!
Hi, I’m looking to buy some sort of 18-19th century muzzle loader! But I don’t know anything about buying muzzle loading guns. I don’t know where I should get one, whether I need a license (uk) or anything really. Help would be much appreciated!
Thanks
I have no idea about UK sourcing and licensing, sorry...
Very 'Blackadder', Rob!😂😂 'I break wind in your general direction, you oerfidious rosbif!'
Cheers.
'Embuggerance' 😂😂😂 just love the way you casually slipped this into your narrative.
Cheers
When is the series on the Cooey rifles
Kinda sorta not really military arms, those...
@@britishmuzzleloaders true but its every Canadian outdoorsmen and womans first starting rifle and a iconic weapon of Canadian hunters
Hey, Rob. Your videos are always a inspiration.
My beloved dad dies before one year. Cancer... I miss him every day.
He was gunsmith, target shooter, but first of all, Gun and ammo collector. I got his collection. And, here Germany, everything with guns is a problem, I sold a few. But the for me importend, I owned. A lot of German guns, but two british. A long Snider and a Martini-Henry carbine. At moment, I'm thinking about a new project. Buying reloading dies and brass.
That should distract me from the fact, that we are about to get a tightening of gun laws again...
Sorry about your father! Glad you enjoyed the video though!
That's a hell of a group, Rob.
I think His Majesty King Charles III should appoint you 'Custodian of the National Moustache' we should start a petition!
Thank you.
Ah yes, the tea cozy hat, AKA Hat, Fuzzy, Ridiculous. We wore those very occasionally, I never knew they were an uniquely Canadian hat with a long history, we just thought they were stupid looking. I would have had more respect for it if I knew its history.
Haha!
Canadian militia in the 1860's? I'm curious if you'd ever make a Battle of Ridgeway video. I do enjoy your content so good work as ever.
In Time! Definitely on the list….
The weather is just like that here in New Hampshire, USA. Snowing now but turning to rain later today, miserable. Snowblowers hate slush, constantly clog, a useless and futile endeavor.
Not alone then!
@@britishmuzzleloaders 12 inches of snow predicted Friday night and all day Saturday. The hits just keep on coming.
16.5 for me but not with the P53. i’ve used the french 1846 carabine de chasseur😮

Nice shooting!
"Woman! I'm busy! I have a competition!" Haha! Fantastic footage as per usual from BML. Keep up the sterling work Sir!
Thank you kindly!
These videos are a gem. So much history and thought and care goes into them. Thank you Rob and the Mackenzie’s!
Cheers!
Good afternoon from Syracuse NY USA brother thank you for sharing this video and all the information
Most welcome!
I was expecting the lady to yell for you after you finish shooting
Pauvre Sergent d'avoir à endurer le soldat Mackenzie. Bonne chance Sergent Papineau.
Oui! Bonne chance! Mais, il lui faudra plus que de la chance. (Is that the way you say it?)

Their should be a bonus score for us Americans who have to shoot this match in yards instead of meters. We have to reach just a little further!
Erm, a little less surely? 50 yards is about 45.7 metres.
@@gwtpictgwtpict4214 Sorry, handicapped is the wrong word! Points should be given haha
I think you need to check your math.... 😀
@@britishmuzzleloaders it’s that West Virginia math
Where do you source your musket capps? im canadian and having a hell of a time finding them for my p53. I got some with the gun when i bought it , but now im running low
Online mostly.
As a neighbor to Quebec, even I have a hard time understanding Québécois 😂
Haha!
I really enjoyed this, showing snow shooting in kit, it must have been a nightmare in full kit in the day, keeping your barrel dry
It was a bit of chore, yes....
I would not want to be your mustache hairs in this piece, both wet and freezing at the same time.
Indeed!
Got a nice Parker Hale musketoon but never fired it. Got it used for couple hundo because the dealer disliked ML rifles and looks unfired.
Nice!
im a proud owner of a p53 even gave her a name "southern hospitality" to show them yankees some southern hospitality
Great rifle!
Your pritchet cartridge is a real good invention. But why not attaching a percussion cap to one end of a paperstrip (in a hole with a little glue) and the other end of the strip is glued to the cartrigde. Always if you pull out a cartridge like this you will already have a cap in your hand. No neads to grab in a pouch for one.
While your idea is interesting, it’s by no means historical. The kit and loading drills shown are very much so.
Where did you get your van at for your Parker Hale I have one and I don't know where to get the bayonet from. Where would be the best place to find the sling pattern
The sling is in Pierre Turner and a source is Shedtime Leather on FB.
What I've been curious about, is where the area is where you shoot? It looks like you have the whole of the Canadian forest at your disposal.
In the Western Canadian mountains…
Rob, I really liked the snow shoes. I haven't worn them since my mid 20's. An yes over time an distance they do wear you down. On the percussion caps were also in a paper packet or did some have to count when reloading there cap pouch.
Caps were issued at 75 per 60 rounds of ammo issued.
I don’t why, but I was expecting the muppets….
Don't know either..
Always such a nice weather when you are shooting CFC :D :D :D
Indeed!
Nice shooting Rob! Now get that tea cozy back to where it belongs! Or you will be sleeping in the garage! :)
Tell me about it!
Nice, I have an original cavalry carbine and engineers short rifle Lancaster oval pattent bore.
Very nice!
Time marches on, the impressive moustache gets a wee bit greyer, but the lovely old lady she still go Booooooooooom!
Yes it does.

Fluent in that heathen language..... that can mean one thing..... .
Haha! You mean franglais?
The mustache does Francais accent!! Cool!
"Franglais" to quote a phrase.
Jealous of your snow. Its a rarity in southern England. Loving the snowshoes. Great footage and shooting 👍
Fairly rare in Manchester too, just a couple of light falls this year. Enough to be pretty though :-)
Snow is great as long as it doesn't inhibit getting out in the bush... which it does...
@@britishmuzzleloaders
No such thing as bad weather mate. Just the wrong clothing, as Billy Connelly once observed. 😉
When it snows, I hike and camp. I go on snow hiking trips to the Alps. It never stops me. In fact the opposite. ☺
@@lyndoncmp5751 I'm not taking about any "discomfort", I'm talking about not being able to physically get the vehicle into the bush with what I need to in order to shoot and film!
Fair enough. Point taken. Could always invest in a snowmobile or a husky dog sled though haha
Cheers 👍
I love your videos
Thank you!
Hilariously consummate, as ever.
Cheers!
British was so related to each other that literally everyone looked the same.
Sure!
I don't think my grandfather made it to sergeant when he was in the Canadian Army in WWII. His French was definitely rural as he was born and lived in Saskatchewan until the family moved to Vancouver in the 1930s.
Thanks for sharing!
@@britishmuzzleloaders You're welcome
