It’s binchotan charcoal mainly for yakitori. I use it every summer in Japan for bbqing chicken and it adds amazing smoke flavor. My trick is to stand them up in a chimney starter on top of coconut charcoal pucks and light kindling from underneath and let it sit until they’re glowing red.
What a blast from the past! John is pretty much the reason I started using multiple cameras in my videos. His production quality inspired me. I now realize what a bear that was and why he might leave unexpectedly. Can’t wait for the overland grillers channel!
Great video Greg! I love the change up with you out in the desert. Wow, I haven't seen John in forever! Great seeing him on camera again. I really enjoyed his shows! I'm digging the channel name Overland Grillers! Nice ring to it and it says it all. Hope you and John really make it happen! Cheers bro!
Dude this was so fun, we need to do this more often!!! had a blast and thanks for letting me take over the ending of your video! Picana was fantastic by the way ! STICK AROUND !
I've used similar charcoal. Komodo Kamado makes a coconut based charcoal that is the same shape. It's a PITA to light, but lasts a very long time. It's different, but once you get used to it, it works well. Good cook!
Wow! Big John’s in da house 👊 So good to see ya buddy, even if it only through RUclips 😊 Hope you start making vids again, always loved your style. Greg, awesome as always, remind me of my jeepin days.
I think an overlander grilling duo would be awesome. We do alot of desert trips during the winter and would love to try some more of these grills and impress my desert buddies. Cheers from East County SD 🍻
Fun video. I hope to see more cooking on the little SNS. I have a Weber Jumbo Joe with an SNS, Grillgrates and I'm thinking of taking my Cajun Bandit spacer in the camper as well.
Holy crap, what a blast from the past! I am pretty sure big meat sunday was one of the first cooking channels i watched on youtube. I really hope you guys do more together. Overland grillers would be awesome, especially since i am an overlander as well! you should check out trail recons channel as well, he is a big youtube jeep/overland guy and his buddy Marco is a great cook as well. Could be a power team!!
It's looks like a perfect place for camping. What an awesome cook too. You really nailed on that pichana. So, so tender, and so juicy. Thanks so much for this great video. Cheers, Greg! 👍👍✌️
It's fantastic to see Big Meat Sunday again. How about an overlanding rig tour. I'm working on a campervan now and I'm sure I'd get some inspiration from your rig.
The vibes on this upload were great and that picanha turned out amazing. That charcoal looks like the stuff Yakitori guys in Japan use. Binchotan i think its called.
I'm a huge picanha fan thanks to Guga! And also a huge Ballistic fan. You guys just make it so easy with the expert advice. By the way, congrats on the coverage on ncaa basketball commercial! Awesome.
OMG! BMSSSS!! man that's crazy - I was just browsing his library for old time's sake. I hope you can convince him to upload once in a while or do collabs!
I am so happy to see John. I really was wondering what happened to him. I was fearing the worst. Thank God John is well and my fears were unfounded. Thanks for sharing Greg!
How you slice depends on how you are planning to cook it. You only slice with the grain if you are cutting thick strips and using a skewer during the cook. Then the person eating will be cutting it against the grain for each bite. Cooking it as you did, as a roast, you slice it thin against the grain.
As if I didnt like Ballistic BBQ videos enough,... now I find out hes into offroading/overlanding. Hell.. now I think he needs to start his own "on the trail" cooking series for the channel!
I use that type of charcoal a lot, and love it.. perfect for reverse searing and hot and fast cooks.I find starting it in a chimney with some kingsford blue gets it going easy as 🔥
Anyone from NE ohio? I've been looking for picinaha but no luck. My local meat shop was going to charge almost double what I use to buy it at in L.A. because it was" a special order" no brazilian stores here either . 😕
Greg, that is coconut shell charcoal probably from Indonesia. I have a bunch of it here when I purchased my Komodo Kamado from Dennis Linkletter in Bali.
This type of charcoal is a high heat long lasting one... A charcoal chimney would have done the job. Love them. I highly recommend to read the manual, when dealing with new things. If Japan and Europe can do it (as you say) you should give it another shot. Ok, didn't watch long enough as you've changed your opinion. My tip of lighting this charcoal is still valid.
Looked like a fun area to camp out. The picanha looked tasty Greg! That charcoal is burned at a really high temp so it takes some serious heat to get it going. Did you have a generator going for your lights?🤘
Hi Greg, that meat looked to die for! Tell John and Patty I said hi. Call John Norm just for fun. I know about his kitchen and did some conceptual drawings but never saw the finished product. Come on Big Meat Sunday!!
@@BallisticBBQ These kind of coal is here in Europe relatively popular. It is my favorite for grilling. Some of the briquette can extinguish with water and reused. This should be described on the package.
I like the BBQ content! Quick question on the Taxa. How do you like sthe Taxa Woolley Bear? I'm looking for a trailer and this seems like the best blend of function, quality and price. Any feedback or reasons why you wouldn't buy again? Thank you!
I'll be doing some XJ and trailer vids in the future. Mine is a 96 and I'm the original owner. 210K and going strong! I've been pretty much upgrading everything for the last 4 years or so, from the ground up.
How does the size of the SnS travel grill compare to the Weber Jumbo Joe? I might just have to have an "accident" with my Weber so that I can pick one up. XD
“Overland Grillers”. Oh yeah!! 👍 Greg I know you’re a PK Guy also. Ever try the PKGO? It’s a heckuva portable grill and absolutely more durable than a portable kettle. Just wondered if you have checked it out? Great job on the Picanha!
The PKGO with the flip kit gives you 2 hibachi grills in one or with the lid in place a mini PK360 for reverse sear or indirect cooking in a small cast aluminum cooker. The grates are impressive as is the grill. The PBC mini would also be ideal for all kinds of “Overland” cooks! Love your channel Greg! You were my inspiration for getting a Golden’s Cast Iron Kamado and I have no regrets. What a cooker! Golden’s has a mini Kamado also that would rock the “Overland” cooks!
I have tried this type of charcoal here in the Middle East. It's very difficult to get going. Lasts a long time once it is finally lit. Nice cook in the end. What is the diameter of this grill? I need a new grill for camping. I have a Toyota 76 Series Landcruiser set up for overlanding.
Greg I love this! I’ve watched your videos for years, and camping + cooking sounds awesome. I think you could get a lot of inspo from Chad over on Living the Van Life. Maybe you could even do a collab some day! His video skills and your cooking skills would make it perfect.
That charcoal I believe is called Bichotan and it’s a pain to light up. But burns hotter and longer than normal. It’s just a pain to use.
We only need to say the word picanha to Guga show up!
Pain is correct brother!

What a fun vid inspite of your charcoal mishap. Good times with great friends in the great outdoors! Life is good!
Good times for sure John!
That looks like an amazing outdoors trip! There's nothing like grilling and chilling out in the open, away from city life.

“Napalm to get it going” that was worth a good chuckle.
LOL! Should used my Robert Duvall voice. Cheers Rick!
That camp set-up look great
Thank you George. A step below "Glamping." Lol
Nice camp set up and roast. I'll have to settle for tri-tip here in Arizona unless I resort to special order.

¡Hola! These coals or briquette work good in a kindling chimney. They need up to 20-30 min. too burn, but they burn long. Adiós, Rainer
I'll give that a go. Once they were up and running I was impressed.

sick - overlanding and bbq. if you whip out a bottle of bourbon it will be the youtube trifecta for me!!
