Hey friends. Just a reminder that this is a very broad overview of a big topic. I could make a 12 part documentary series on just Saudi Arabia alone. But I hope this provides a broad understanding of how things have gone down in the region since the 30s. I encourage to go down the rabbit holes of parts of this that are interesting to you. There's so much more to learn about each of these events. Thanks for watching!
More people need to educate themselves about the history of the Middle East, to build a clearer picture of how the British and Americans get involved in every major crisis.
You're talking like those nationalities are "different" or "other". Don't fall into the trap of thinking you would have or will behave differently when you find yourself in similar circumstances
Since the United Colonies of England (aka: THE UNITED STATES INC.) has set foot onto the Continental Americans it has been a war with the aboriginal and indigenous people every year. And they call it a Christian nation! Now, the de facto UNITED STATES INC goes around the world conquering nations in the name of democracy. Yet, that word never appears in the constitution. At the end, the Arab culture and Islam will be blamed for the political instability of the region. The same things happen here long time ago during European colonization in Southeast Asian Archipelago. They left us with borders that seperate our family and our people. Until now, me as a Malaysian need to cross the border just to meet our relatives in Sumatera and Riau Archipelago. If the Johore-Riau-Lingga Sultanate and all the Sultanate in Sumatra still exist, surely it will be wonderful.
I mean if they exist other kingdoms in Indonesia might exist too (as you know there's tons of them) and it'll be much harder for me, and indonesian, just to go from central java to west java. But indonesia and malaysia's relationship is great, and even tho we have to cross the border, atleast we don't have to pay for visa, etc. Moreover, if kingdoms still exist, I don't think the political state is stable as there's so many kingdoms :)
@@febbykamila1301 i dont thinks so, if u looked at the formation of Malaya, it is a federation that consist with 9 Malay Sultanate that agreed to united together. If you watch carefully to the culture of Nusantara people, we can see that there are a great tolerance with each other, like how one of the royal court member of Lingga married with the Terengganu Sultan in order to strengthen the state's relationship and its people. I believed if even all the kingdom of the Nusantara is not united, an organization like EU but with better understanding will be exist too. Too bad, because of the European influence to the culture, identity and way of lives between the countries of the Southeast Asia, we still feels the difference until today. Hopefully ASEAN will bring back our unity.
@@muhammadnaim8203 Well that's the case of Malaysia. Sultanate are all muslims, if I'm correct ? Kingdoms in Indonesia have great tolerance ofc, but it's hard to keep one not offended. What cause them to have tolerance is ironically the dutch that colonized indonesia for 3 centuries. I think it's different with EU, because they mostly have one goal, i don't know much about them. But one of the reason why the Dutch CAN colonized Indonesia is because some kingdoms are fine with the monopoly that the Dutch did (because of money, ofc). For example, the Solo sultanate is dismantled because they helped the dutch, unlike the Yogya who helped the Indonesian govt during the hard times. European invasion is somewhat a plus and ofc the minus are much worse, but that's one of the key factor of why we tolerate and unite at the first place. Till this day, conflicts in Indonesia are still happening, especially toward Papuans. Those "conflicts" are trying to seperate us like the Papuan freedom. In fact, Timor Leste actually regrets they break out of Indonesia because : they get used by foreigners like Australia. I think it's better to stay like this, because if you think Indonesia have massive tolerance, no it's not. I heard Malaysia are actually more conservative than Indonesians, idk. Younger generations like me are (mostly) not racist because we grew up in multicultural enviroments, rather than the older generations. I appreciate ur commentst tho, I hope ASEAN will reunite SEA countries and protect us from the greedy china who's taking our sea ^^

RIGHTS which were unusual in Europe until the 19th Century. All granted by our creator Allah swt. Slowly, but steadily muslims started moving away from religion, and surely things started to decline. Muslims stopped looking at Islam as a way of life, and its influence was only on artificial activities. The Ottoman Empire started weakening and once the world war 1 ended the empire collapsed. After that the empire was divided into countries based on the region, and only then did the US start having an influence on the Middle East. Women started being oppressed and their rights were overlooked by governments that were placed by the US itself. Now my lovely human you know that you didn't get the education you deserved.

There’s a really great (and extensive lol) documentary about the US involvement in Vietnam by Ken Burns! I watched it while I was in Vietnam, and it was so fascinating.
The way I thought about it was that US support of Mujahideen in Afghanistan was retaliation for Soviet's support of Viet Cong in Vietnam. I might be mistaken.
My family actually moved to Saudi Arabia back in 2006 to work for that Californian oil company (called Aramco today). My siblings and I grew up in one of those American communities in the desert and basically consumed American culture. Even the schools were based on the American curriculum and so they taught us American history (despite the fact that less than 1% of students were Americans). I always called the place where we lived “mini-America” and wondered how this place was able to be established in a country so conservative. As a community, we celebrated every culture despite our religious beliefs and befriended people from all sorts of background. It was like a melting pot of cultures. Although it wasn’t until I ran into this video that I saw these American communities as no more than the beginning of a tumor that would spread American influence throughout the region. I have no hate for American people or culture. But their political influence on the region played a major role in the regions instability. Thanks Johnny for shedding light on this topic..
@@KimAhrina11 well yea, ironically, people think think we’re the most conservative country in the world, where in fact, my coutnry (saudi arabia) is literally a mirror of U.S culture and some glimpses of our own, and we’re getting overrun by it by the second nowadays since we’re opening the country up to the world.

No way was the Shah of Iran more popular than his elected predecessor 😀😅🤣😂. If he was so popular he wouldn't have been overthrown by a massively popular revolution. His regime was brutal, the hated and feared secret police Savak was the model for many such agencies worldwide, there were mass detentions, exiles, media crackdowns, extrajudicial killings at home and abroad, even a super unpopular mega party in the desert where hundreds of foreign dignatories, celebs were flown in and regaled in a purpose built mini tent city where even foliage, trees, birds, exotic foods, expensive dining and silverware, foreign chefs were imported to impress the guests.

Talal added in his interview in Aljazera that haters from inside and outside the kingdom tried to made an issue of the military base when in fact it was symbolic base with no real military power to protect the oil company 5) the king of Saudi Arabia durring the invasion of Kuwait was Fahad not Abdulaziz as you put the Abdulaziz’spicture
@Zahin Shahazad muslims being permitted to marry up to 4 wives with consent and approval of the families, including taking full social and financial responsibility of the wives and children are seen as horrible and 'backdated', yet having hundreds of one nights stands or selling oneself online and in real life for money with hundreds of people with no commitment or responsibility is seen as 'progress'. strange times, gotta say.

The craziest border is the one with Singapore. But then again, Malaysian politicians forced them to make their own country 🤨
@Zahin Shahazad Agreed, if Singapore still under the rules of Johore-Riau-Lingga Sultanate, it would not be a problem at all.

@@Ragingcap1212 umm plain ignorance but okay :) Actually, if you want a breakdown here you go:
When Islam was being practiced by Muslims and I emphasize on (practiced). which happened in several empires but I will highlight the last one. Which simply means using Islam as a system of life and as means of self development. Back in the Ottoman Empire ,most ottoman women were permitted to participate in the legal system, purchase and sell property, inherit and bequeath wealth, and participate in other financial activities along with other political activities.
@@Ragingcap1212 you know you won't read it simply because you have no reply to historical evidence of how Islam was the reason the region flourished after centuries of darkness. Islam does not support terrorism. The US does, because it funds Israel and the occupation. Which unsurprisingly is terrorism :). Let alone that the US terrorized Iraq, funds the Saudi war in Yemen that kills innocents everyday, and even funds the Syrian Regime to kill their own civilians. About ISIS, or al Qaeda, you need to understand that just because someone does something in the name of religion doesn't mean it represents the religion. Hamas is not a terrorist organization just because you believe in the US classification doesn't mean it is. Hamas simply defends the Palestinian people who are being ethnically cleansed by the occupation.

@Anonymous and that's the thing many people hate and also is said that led to 9/11 the thing is first america came into Turkey forced them to sign a 100 year contract where they can't remove oli and other resources and also banned many things (you can search up) now cuz of that Turkey's development started minimizing ALOT and the contract ends in like 3-5 years btw,, now about muslims in south asia aka Afghanistan during the 70s Afghanistan had ALOT of development and security for women which ended cuz US helped the wrong guy to bring the oppress and not actual sharia rulling. I can go on about saudi and other stuff as well ...
@@curtisthomas2670 and in Turkey headscarves were banned in state buildings and army areas. Erdoğan fed into that victimhood. still, even if US doesn't create such things, it sure does make it worse to take advantage of it
This is probably the best history video I've ever watched in my life.
Thank you for this great video. A great explanation on how the US strategically exploits countries and benefit from it.
The quality of your videos is so high that me being an audience without paying you money is certainly a crime.

Dulles: The ancient native word for "terrible airport."
Interesting video
Couples of things i want to point out as
1) the coup that was plotted by the UK and USA use to take Mossadegh down who was othe prime minister, not the leader of Iran, the leader was the Shah all the time, before and after the coup, but he gain more power after the coup
2) As millennial from Saudi Arabia, i can tell you that it become less popular to marry more than one wife and have many children which was only common between the wealthy decades ago
3) As far as i now Osama bin laden did not establish Al Qaeda when he returned from Afghanistan after fighting the Soviet, instead he started to call his group Al Qaeda or Qaedi Al Jehad when he left Sudan where he live there for a while after he left his family in Saudi
4) the first US military base in Saudi Arabia was not big as modern ones, as eyewitness points out Talal Bin Abdulaziz, the son of the founder of Saudi Arabia and a powerful minister in King Saud cabinet. Talal added in his interview in Aljazera that haters from inside and outside the kingdom tried to made an issue of the military base when in fact it was symbolic base with no real military power to protect the oil company
5) the king of Saudi Arabia durring the invasion of Kuwait was Fahad not Abdulaziz as you put the Abdulaziz’spicture
@Zahin Shahazad muslims being permitted to marry up to 4 wives with consent and approval of the families, including taking full social and financial responsibility of the wives and children are seen as horrible and 'backdated', yet having hundreds of one nights stands or selling oneself online and in real life for money with hundreds of people with no commitment or responsibility is seen as 'progress'. strange times, gotta say.
a clip on Tik Tok guided me here and Im so glad it did. Amazing job breaking everything down.

look at Saudi Arabia its citizens are flourishing look at japan look at korea look at most countries that were touched by US they are doing very well ofc until u go against them moral of the story is that dont go against huge empires bc u will be beaten countries such as China Usa And Russia are dangerous countries and must no be messed with but if i were to choose to go with a bro date with one of these countries i would definetly choose US they ve helped my country lots of times and many other countries as well

As a student with attention deficit disorder (ADD), my biggest roadblock when learning history is when the teacher arbitrarily chooses a point in time to begin the lesson, without much context to the bigger picture of where civilization originated. Your teaching style is so profoundly engaging because you start at points in history that make sense. In this video you started at the origin of humanity. Effectively running through the history of the middle East (and what it is) before even getting to your main talking points. A wonderfully executed lesson. Very engaging.
