The Secret Diary Of The Holocaust tells the extraordinary tale of a 14-year-old Polish girl, Rutka Laskier, who was murdered at Auschwitz in 1943.
In 2005, the school notebook in which Rutka recorded her last months in the ghetto of Bedzin was made public, six decades after she hid it under the floorboards of her home there. Rutka was immediately dubbed the 'Polish Anne Frank'.
In her diary, Rutka wrote about her life in the ghetto in 1943, detailing not just the Nazi atrocities, physical hardship and hunger, but also how she was developing as a young woman. She also tells how she made a daring escape from one of the early 'aktions', Nazi round-ups of Jews for transportation.
The documentary will unravel Rutka's story through the eyes of her half-sister, Israeli academic Zahava Scherz, on a journey to Poland in search of the sister she never knew.

The friend that retrieved and held onto the diary for decades is the friend in life we all want. She was so sweet, it made me cry.
What I found to be heartbreaking. Imagine being a 14 year old girl (or boy). You're not sick with cancer or any other deadly illness or sickness. Yet you know, you are going to die. She wrote that before hiding her diary. I can't imagine being 14 and knowing, not thinking, but knowing, I was going to die.
"If only I could say, it's over, you die only once. But I can't, because despite all these atrocities, I want to live, and wait for the following day." ~Rut "Rutka" Laskier (12 June 1929 - 5 August 1943)
My heart breaks for you, sweet child. I'm so sorry. RIP

Thank you Rutka for hiding your diary and to your friend for keeping it so safe. She was so smart and determined. It shows in what person how much the world lost!!! What would she have done with her life??? What would her future generations??? So much taken by hate!!! I am so glad she named her daughter after her sister to keep her memory alive. I live in a small town in Vermont, USA nd we have a survivor that lived here and she set up teaching and spoke when she was alive at school. I had taught my daughter but when she heard it in person it is so much more powerful
It is a Jewish tradition to name children for beloved deceased family members. A friend named her daughter Ingrid, after a male member named Irving, in memory of him.
What you did with teaching your daughter about this is inspiring.

I have such a deep passionate respect for anyone who was in the holocaust. It has such a deep place in my heart. I was just a teen ager when i first read The Diary of Anne Frank .Since then i have absorbed everything about the holocaust . Thank you for this presentation.
@@dianestafford6968 you're welcome. I'm really glad that people share all the experiences of what happened during the holocaust . I hope that as time goes on that all generations will know and understand those years .
Me too. And my Jewish great grandmother fled Russia to escape right before the holocaust. Her son, my grandfather, married a Christian woman and their kids were raised Christian and so on. But his sister married another jew and that side of the family is all Jewish but live overseas. I know nothing about my Jewish heritage first hand and it makes me sad. I only know what I read in books. My great grandmother died 15 years before I came along and my grandfather didn’t talk about his Jewish past. It embarrassed him 😞
Fun fact Rutka and Anne were born on the same day and year
I was 9 when I first read the diary.
me too!
Don't let future generations forget what these poor people went through because we as a society can't allow this to happen again!!! As hard as it is to let people know how horrible things were they need to never forget!!!
WHY is the irrelevant music more important to this video editor to be heard, than this very important story?!
It’s called copyright
Because the editor is a total idiot!
Side Eyed & Bushy Tailed I agree. Couldn’t make out the narrative at all.
My first language is Spanish and I'm struggling to understand the English translation UNDER the voice of the girl reading in Polish. I'm missing a lot, and have to keep adjusting the volume because sometimes it's too loud, and then it decreases dramatically, and back again to loud.
The fact that you can’t hear the English narration it’s very frustrating that the person speaking whether it’s a child from the school or whatever is annoying because their shrilly loud. But the voice of Rutka In the near ration is really too soft. The music is utterly irrelevant. For that reason I nearly turn this off for or five times
Thank you for sharing this sad but inspiring story. Rutka left behind a very important account of herself and her life experience at a time when young people were witness to terrible things and had hope for nothing but to live through the day and see another tomorrow. That her father survived Auschwiz and went on to remarry and bring more life into the world is a true miracle. For Rutka's diary to have been kept, lovingly protected, and then shared with future generations is so important. The most touching aspect of this documentary is that the sister Rutka never knew, and who would never have a chance to meet her, has had the opportunity to acquaint herself with Rutka and the homeland in which she grew up. Rutka hid her diary to keep it safe but always wanted it to be found. She wanted people to know her story. Yet she would never have dreamed that her words would eventually find their way home to family again... to be read by a sister who would have the life that she herself would never get to live.
Does anyone know how the friend got away?
Well put!
Her friend was a Christian@@jodiutley7292
What a touching documentary! What a privilege to know about the diary of that remarkable girl. She was surely one of a kind! I am so glad her diary was found, preserved, and her words spread out the way she surely would have wanted. Thank you to all of you who made that possible. What a privilege her sister had of visiting all the places that were part of the other sister's life! Thank you so very much for sharing the journey. So meaningful, so profoundly felt. The audio was really a problem, but still, the documentary was so worthy of watching. Thanks a lot! I will never forget this story!
I just bought the journal/diary and read it in a day. I love history and it amazed me how I couldn’t put it down. I don’t believe most kids her age have no idea what emotions she had. She dreamed about after the war and about life and how happy she would be. It was really sad how she was losing faith. So intelligent, yet so vulnerable with the short life she had. She loved reading and there were so few books to be found. Just so sad.
I would love to actually be able to hear the words this beautiful young lady wrote. I didn't sit down to watch this only to hear the very loud music. So disappointing.
That's today's world all over. 'The music was too loud'. If only Rutka's concerns had been so pathetically trivial.

Well said
There are no words to describe how evil those people were. Just pure evil.😢😢😢
@Jen Green I really know this goes on today. I'm not going to give many details but I come from a country where food is scarce and thieves often steal food, oil is also scarce, as a result transportation is a luxury, power outages are part of one daily live. I didn't say it stopped but I said that people who caused the whole situation were evil. History often repeats itself and the weak ones suffer the most. Out of nowhere a tyrant might be the next in power... If what we live here now is tough enough, because it is I can't imagine how it was/it is for other people in much rougher circumstances. Sorry if I made any grammar mistake.

I persevered through the video because my great-grandfather was a rabbi from Warsaw who came to the US prior to the war and none of his relatives survived. Unfortunately, music overplaying the speaker and the translator made it impossible to hear some passages and immensely detracted from the story. It would be nice if the sound was re-engineered so that all the English words were audible. I find it amazing how astute this child was at 13, much more so than I was at that age and how she and the other children were able to face the negative changes in their world with such strength. What a wonderful legacy for her half-sister and family.
Alice Rabbit Your family is garbage and you’re a piece of trash they gave birth to
This is a very remarkable, sad and powerful story and the best testimony about a young Polish girl, whose only 'crime' was having been born Jewish. The saddest part of it is the state of people's mind, who get worked up about too loud background music, failing to engage with the message of this story. The words that matter are always uttered quietly amid background noise. Learning to listen and to hear is an important and valuable skill.
I thought this was Anne Frank until I saw the name . I'm glad I watch it .
This person keep telling me it's not true and laughing. Something is wrong with people.
yep the loud music made it more difficult to engage with the story.
Beautiful story.. wished the background music weren't so loud so I could hear the words of this brave woman!!
I am only 4 minutes in, but this has already pulled at my heart. I am so sorry for anyone who suffers loss like this. However, I am happy she has found her sister. Incredible.
Exactly Alice.
My heart feels broken for the tragic story of this innocent child. How can humans behave in this way? Is it any wonder the Jewish people fight to keep their country and home.
Iris Pect all polish no matter religion
joan baczek, iIm certainly not diminishing the suffering of all those affected by this atrocity. I’m merely pointing out that they had no country. The 6000000 Jews had no where to turn to, no home and no loyalty from the country they were living in and calling home. The polish have Poland and were amongst their people in their home. I know this because my grandfather was a Polish Jew turned away by the people he thought were his friends and country.
ImNotMad ButUR so true. It’s up to people like you and myself to teach our kids, siblings, friends and any one else who is willing to learn, that we are all people, regardless of religion, color, sex and nationality. Bless you for your obvious kind heart 💓

I appreciate your friendly comment and fully agree with you!
I had never even heard of her until today. What a powerful and sad story.
Many of these kids had to grow up fast due to their situation, it’s sad too see how they suffered and they were very aware of what was to come and were preparing for it.
Such a gifted and talented girl. People are so cruel sometimes. I can never understand it.
I pray that one day this is re-edited so we can all hear and understand her story! I believe it is very very important for the world to hear and know her story!
I am grateful for the account of another diary of a young girl. It never ceases to amaze me how much more educated children were than they are today. I would love to read this young girls account. Unfortunately in this documentary the music being played while she is speaking in her native language and then translated into English all at the same time is disturbing. Her thoughts, and feelings, as well as her story has been drowned out by all of the background noise. If the music had been toned down or just silent during the reading would have made this far better. This diary about her life is just as important today along with Anne Frank's. As we are living in a time when all of our freedoms may disappear.
I agree on the last line
I really would have liked to hear Rutka speaking; however, the music was way too loud. Who makes a video or movie with music so loud that it makes the thing impossible to hear?
I had the honor to live in Germany as a young adult, met and became friends with some survivors of this era. My landlords were Czech who were lucky enough to escape when the Nazis occupied Poland. They were children and young adults at the time of the escape. Hearing their stories first hand, I will never forget.

I really wanted to watch this important documentary but had to stop because the music was too loud making voices unclear in so many places. Such a scheme, wish it could be sound edited.
You wrote out my thoughts exactly! I turned it off. Disappointed.
That was a problem only in the beginning. As the video continues, you can hear the voices much better.
@@victoria653 Rutka clearly wanted her voice to be heard, too.
As I get older, I realize that many factors impact hearing. Younger people think it just means everything is softer or quiet. Now, I realize that it can be difficult to distinguish sounds from one another. That may be why the blending of two voices and music makes it difficult for some to hear Rutka's message.
A group of five Jewish women are eating lunch in a busy cafe. Nervously, their waiter approaches the table. “Ladies,” he says. “Is anything okay?”
This is an important story and it needs to be told, with that said it needs to be redone because the music drowns out the voices. I am very disappointed in the editing.
So get out your machine and redo this. I look forward to seeing a new copy and I believe more people will want to watch it once they can hear the story. Like I said it's a very important story and it needs to be told over and over again, but it's hard to retell a story when you can't hear it. Sometimes the words are so low it's unintelligible.
