  • Eclipse glasses are a great way to observe a solar eclipse, but what if you don't have a pair? Find out how to easily make an eclipse-perfect pin-hole viewer with common household items.
    Activity Link: eclipse2017.nso.edu/making-a-p...
    *Caution: never look at the Sun THROUGH the pinhole viewer. Use this to project an image of the sun onto another surface to look at indirectly.

    On August 21st 2017, every state in the US will experience a solar eclipse. Here we will discuss some of the basics you'll need to know if you are planning or helping to coordinate an eclipse event, or if you'd like to know a little bit more about what to expect.

    Seems to me when I was a kid I made one of those box viewers. while the eclipse was happening I discovered I could see the reflection of the sun and the eclipse much better in a puddle.

    I don't know if this question has already been asked but, if we can't find the eclipse glasses you mentioned that we could use welders glasses, what should we be looking for if we decide to purchase the welders glasses as an alternative? Thank you in advance for your response.

      Shade 12 to Shade 14. Get the 4.5" x 5.25" glass if you can. If not you'll have to use 2" x 4.25" size. You'll probably need to tape some cardboard around the edges of the glass to block out any peripheral sunlight. That is assuming that you don't have access to a welders hood.

      The lens must be # 13 or 14. NASA says 12 and up. Good luck finding those at this date though.

    What about my dog? Can you sun damage his eye?

    • @LissaAOE
      @LissaAOE 6 лет назад +6

      Lx Beltran I read that animals know by instinct not to look directly in the sun, so you don't need to worry. Your dog might think it's dusk and nighttime though and start preparing for bed when it gets dark during the day, if you're in the path of totality.

    I just purchased polarized sunglasses for each of my family members...we are so excited to watch the eclipse, especially my twins....once in a lifetime experience

    • @fishalope5
      @fishalope5 6 лет назад +2

      Misses Noitall polarized sunglasses are not enough, you would need certified solar eclipse glasses, welders glasses #14, or make this pinhole viewer. observing without the correct glasses will cause damage to your retina, damage is not reversable.

    • @srvntlilly
      @srvntlilly 2 месяца назад +1

      Yes, don't even think about just using polarized glasses. Much, much too dangerous. Only what @fishalope5, above, said.

    I'm confused about why we can't look at the eclipse without safety precautions?? Would someone for sure get injured or do they just not want us to take the chance and what would the injury be??

    • @Tingling10
      @Tingling10 6 лет назад +9

      1981amillia Because it can pernamently damage part of your retina, and it MAY cause you to be blind.

    • @xiav3318
      @xiav3318 6 лет назад +1

      1981amillia you would go blind . Its because there is a part in your eyes that filter light and turn them to energy and send them to the brain ( according to the video I watched ) . when you look at something like the sun with lots of lights , there is too much energy and your eye reacts to that and I can't remember how but it can lead to blindness .

    is it ok to just where sunglasses ❓

    • @NationalSolarObservatory
      @NationalSolarObservatory  6 лет назад +2

      Claudia Castillo no sunglasses are NOT good enough. Not even polarized ones. You need solar viewing glasses (I.e. Eclipse glasses) or a pinhole viewer to safely view the eclipse. If you are on the path of totality, you need safety viewers for the partial phases before and after totality and you can only look directly at the sun with no protection during the 2 minutes of totality. If you're not on the path of totality then you need safety viewers the entire time. You can use this info graphic to help understand what safety measures you need and when: eclipse2017.nso.edu/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/what-to-expect-2.pdf

    The word is"creScent," NOT cresZent!" There is no letter "Z" in the word "crescent" and throughout the entire video she pronounced it as if it were "creZZent!!!" It drove me quite mad! It's also as if she only made one end of the pinhole viewer but not the other! I've looked at quite a few others and they all had a box or tube!
