In this video we explain the differences between a solar and lunar eclipse and why some believe that a total eclipse of the sun is the greatest natural phenomenon of them all.
Total solar eclipses are a big deal not because of how infrequent they are - there’s a total solar eclipse every 18 months on average - but because of how little of the Earth’s surface falls in the path of any given eclipse shadow.
The next total solar eclipse to visit the US will be in 2024. If an eclipse happens to come to your town, you’re lucky. Any given location will see a total solar eclipse only once in more than 300 years, on average. The vast majority of us will have to travel to an eclipse path if we want to see a total eclipse in our lifetimes.

The next solar eclipse over the United States will be in 2024.
After that? 2045. Then 2052, 2078, and, if you’re truly blessed with longevity, a great one over Maine in 2079.

Ancient civilisation actually knew about astrology,astronomy etc. Somehow along the way ,much knowledge was lost.I have read that this eclipse was actually predicted from ancient Sumeria/Kemet times!
So, in 1999 I was 14 and in the middle of nowhere with my dad near the France-Belgium border as we found a quiet spot to look at the eclipse. What struck me the most was the ambient light as the moon progressively blocked the the sun. It was dimmer and dimmer and... whiter, and the nature went silent, no noises from birds or insects, everything went shush as the sun dimmed, the world was just not the same. It was eerie.
The memory still gives me the shivers. If you have the opportunity, don't miss it.

That's exactly what a crowd sounds like during an eclipse. I saw the 2017 one and it was one of the most amazing experiences in my life. Strangers were hugging each other, people were crying tears of joy. So amazing.

I just finished watching one, here in the future. It was the most awesome thing I've ever seen in my 24 years of living. Seriously.
i saw the same eclipse two days ago, the most amazing thing i've seen in my 35 years.
It's hilarious to me that people took off of work, traveled, stayed somewhere else, etc just to see this for like 5 minutes. I still don't understand what's so great about this it looks pretty meh, people will do anything to make a big deal out of anything it's so corny
@@BrayZap I saw the eclipse that just happened, my first. You can watch all the videos, look at all the photos, read all the accounts, but they don't come close to describing the experience of a total eclipse. You have to experience it in person--and it's a profound experience.

I was in the path of totality in the 2017 eclipse I took video and pictures. It was the most beautiful thing I have ever witnessed in my life. I was emotional because I think I knew that this was one in a lifetime amazing thing that I was watching. People don’t understand that this is a once in a lifetime event. Especially Totality. The moon is going around the earth from west to east, so the shadow moves in that direction at a certain speed. I'm not sure of its relationship to the rotation of the earth, so that could complicate things.

Explain how they are able to point a laser onto that box(mirror) and have the beam shoot back exactly towards the receiving unit on earth. They are both moving, spinning and rotating. Even if you managed to line up everything perfectly it would only last for a second and would take years for everything to realign.

Actually during one Solar eclipse I looked at the solar eclipse directly because I really wanted to see but I took certain precautions. I covered my eyes with my fingers and through a small gaping I looked at the eclipsed sun. Also I used only one eye to see thinking in case if one eye goes blind I can still use the other one. LOL.
Saw the sun with my own eyes. Didn't get blinded (any more).

You wouldn't "never be able to see". It would not destroy your entire retina - just a small bit. The trouble is that that small bit will be right in the center of your vision which is actually the only really good part there is (your brain does a great job at fooling you into thinking otherwise.). So even though you'd still have a lot of retina left, it would sure feel like you couldn't see. However just glancing at it for a fraction of a second probably won't do anything. You have to stare there for dozens of seconds to do real damage but the precautionary principle says don't stare at all.
To be real it would be impossible to stare at the sun long enough to blind you. The body automatically recoils, when it's had enough, even if you are lucky enough to see Totality. Nature is truly amazing! How lucky we are. Peace !
My dad and I will be road tripping to see this upcoming one in August. We have been planning this (getting hotels and other reservations) for 2-3 years now and he has been waiting for this solar eclipse since he was 17 years old (he's 63 now). We're both huge nerds and we can't wait to see it!!

I saw a full eclipse about 3 years ago in Northern Ireland, it was beautiful. I used to see lunar eclipses quite often.. I think it was on the east horizon, I haven't seen one in years.

@MAXENCE SAMUEL It's not just that. If the moon moves away from earth it could mean extreme climate change.
The tides and Earth's rotation are actually the cause of the moon moving farther away, and assuming no outside forces it will never escape Earth's orbit. As it moves further away it will slow down the Earth's rotation until eventually Earth is "tidally locked" with the moon, meaning that Earth days last as long as months and the moon will appear to be stationary in the Earth sky. At that point, there will be a permanent high tide in some parts of the earth and permanent low tide on others. This process has already slowed Earth's rotation down from ~18 hours to our 24 hour days, but it's still so slow that it probably won't reach equilibrium until after the Earth-Moon system is already destroyed by the Sun.

Great video! Honestly began to tear up at the end while hearing the cries of amazement of the people watching the BBC coverage. This video did a great job of emphasizing the magnitude of such an event from the simple explanations to the convenient visuals to even the awe-inspiring music choice. When I watch the total solar eclipse on August 21st from the beach in North Carolina, I'll have a better understanding of the moment in time I stand witness to and the causes of such rare beauty. I saw the eclipse in the video as it passed through my home town, it was really cool, you should definately see one if you get the chance.
I was there...Portland, TN..it rocked...drove 18 hours to see it...can't wait for 2024 in NY. Much shorter drive!

No no no, the sun is not 400 times bigger. It's DIAMETER is 400 times bigger. There's a big difference
One might also think that the size is referencing volume - i.e. you can fit 400 moons inside the sun.

Steve MacInnis nope. Because of exponential growth when dealing with multi dimensional shapes, the diameter would be 3× more, but surface area would be about 9× greater and the volume would be about 27× bigger.
Steve MacInnis I don't know what you're talking about, when I have two cups and I say one is 3 times as big, I'm saying it holds 3 times as much water. Not that it is three times as wide. When I say legal paper is 1.3 times the size of letter, do you automatically think that it is surface area or length is 1.3 times bigger? When we're dealing with greater dimensions, the assumption is you bring all into account when you say bigger unless specified otherwise.
Dylan Lollar, But you're talking about cups. What do we ALWAYS reference when talking about cups? Their volume. If I told you my monitor was bigger than yours we would talk about area. If I told you I am bigger than you, I'm probably talking about height. We associate different quantitative measurements depending on the subject.

The total solar eclipse on 8/21 passed right over my house. I have never seen a picture or video that truly captures the majesty of this event. You have see it with you own eyes...

A person standing on the moon would be able to see a simultaneous sunrise and sunset over the Earth, something no human has ever seen. How amazing would that be?
They'd need to be sure to have plenty of power to keep cool and then warm though. It would be darned cold on the Moon during a Lunar eclipse. Without an atmosphere to help regulate temperature, it is prone to rapid temperature changes. The Moon's surface can reach 260 F (127 'C) in sunlight and -280F (-173'C) in shadow.
We are getting a total solar eclipse over where I live for the first time in my lifetime soon, but I have to be in school that day! FML!

I'm a teacher and our elementary school already has plans to empty and watch the eclipse with those little glasses she was showing. We're doing a unit on solar/lunar orbit that leads up to the eclipse!
Noah Gehlhausen a good teacher will rally the class to build a pinhole camera out of a cardboard box and take you outside :)

I remember a partial growing up. The semi-circle shadows were amazing. My band teacher stopped class so we could all see it.

We humans are living in a time where our moon and sun are in perfect relation (size and distance) to each other to observe total solar eclipses.
So not only is it a miracle to actually have a star and a moon in this perfect relation but there is also intelligent life on the planet to observe it. Plus as at the moon is moving further away, intelligent life is present on the planet at the precise time in which this will be observable.
Bluntly speaking, this series of miracles is practically impossible.
So even if there is life on other planet, they will not ever witness a solar eclipse. And if there are solar eclipses occurring with other planets there will no life to observe it.
Make of that what you will.

Unlikely things happen all the time, it would be more unlikely that none of them happen. Who knows how many incredible arrangements of the solar systems, unlocking uncountable dazzling natural phenomena, all of which "of course" mean something there could have been that we will never know or see are possible.
If you think about it though, in the string of incredibly low probability events that led to us being here, watching this video right now, the random size/distance coincidence between the sun and moon isn't all that crazy.
God works in mysterious ways ! we will someday be able to know those type's of things the reasons for things like that ! or else we won't because we just weren't meant to? Either way there will come a day when you meet the one that created your spirit and he will give you this knowledge or else you won't need it but his decisions for anything on your life are the best ways and should be understood to be through your faith

Pocket Fluff Productions It's a huge liability letting millions of children go outside to stare at the sun. None of the schools around me were letting their students go out to see it, hence why I took my kids out of school and drove to another state, but they _were_ allowing students to be checked out for 2 hours without attendance punishment.
