Steep Turns, Stalls and Lazy Eights - Ikarus C42 Microlight

  • In this video I try to improve on my Steep turns following my recent video on practicing general skills where my 60 deg banked turns were nearer 45 deg!
    I then practice some stalls using full power at various flap configurations to emulate excessively steep climb-outs due to bad speed and pitch control as might occur during a botched go-around. The last bit is just me having a bit of fun above the clouds trying out a commercial pilot skill called the lazy eight

    Looks so much easier/smoother on video than in real life , especially the stalls 🤣
    Guess there’s no G force on my phone

      Hi Neil, sorry for the late response. I have not been flying much since the pandemic. I've just uploaded a new video showing my attempts at short field accurate landings. I've started recording cockpit audio too now

    Looked like you were making aileron input during the lazy 8.. should be no aileron, gentle bank and then just pull until the end you roll out of it I think..

    Hello, I noticed that you set flaps with your right hand. I was taught to do this with the left hand. So I always have full control and I am able to compensate the movement of the plane while setting the flaps. What do you think ?

      Hi Jochen, thanks for your observation. Most C42 pilots use thier left hand but it's quite an unatural action and obscures your view. Some pilots opt to swap hands and control the joystick with thier left hand in order to operate the flaps with their right. I have no option because my left arm is partially paralysed and is strapped to an adapted throttle lever so the process I use is to make sure the aircraft is properly trimmed, pitch down a little to compensate for the nose up pitch change then let go of the control column while setting the flaps

    On task 3 SSR the wing dropped slightly to the left and you countered this with opposite aileron (and assumingly rudder) in the microlight syllabus it says to not do this and just use rudder.
    Am I understanding it correctly?

      Hi Danny, sorry for the late reply! You are absolutely correct you should NEVER try to pick up the wing with aileron as the effective increase in camber and angle of attack caused on the low wing could cause it to deepen the stall on that side and cause the aircraft to enter a spin. You should use rudder only to keep level and prevent slip. The correct SSR procedure is to 1) pitch down to break the stall 2) apply full power 3) roll the wings level 4) wait until VY speed regained 5) gently pitch up maintain airspeed with a poitive rate of climb. It all happens very quickly in practice but you should try to follow the process in distinct stages. I have just re-watched the video and I think you are correct in that I possibly rolled out slightly early although I had pitched down 1st and the wing was no longer in a stalled condition
