- Welcome back to Final Fantasy X. This game has a number of generally despised mini games and today we will be focusing on perhaps the most infamous - the Lightning Dodge! The thing is, when you attempt to complete this as intended (running around and trying to predict when to tap the button successfully 200 times in a row...), then yes this is arguably one of the most cruel and unforgiving side quests in FFX! However, with a bit of prep and knowledge of some game-breaking mechanics the whole event can be trivialised remarkably so.

I did the 200 dodges back in the day on PS2 no problem but now I'm many moons older my reactions are slower haha!
I did it. It sucked. Nothing like yoking the enjoyment from one of the greatest games ever.

Back when FFX first released and Gamefaqs was the only resource available, someone mentioned that in certain areas the lightning strikes to the beat of the music. 12 year old me basically somehow found the spot and then closed my eyes and did this essentially blind for 25 minutes straight, when I went back and obtained the Venus sigil, I felt like a literal god. One of my proudest gamer moments ever. This game has some seriously sadistic challenges.
@kevinliu5066 lies... that's a complete lie the lighting completely random other then 1 spot and that's only if you run circles... calling complete bs
I've done this multiple times for multiple friends over the years without knowing this. It's nerve-wracking dodging them randomly and keeping focus for nearly an hour to do it. I've been hit on number 198 before. This looks so much easier.

I dodged 200 lightning bolts by staying in one location and waiting for the lightning to strike. If I knew this method existed, it would have saved time. It's important to pace yourself.
I did the same. That shit was grueling..
This is exactly what i did 2 years ago. Followed the same strat and everything and got it on my FIRST attempt. Really is that reliable and easy. Highly recommended strat!
I was stressing about this trophy, but this method looks promising.
Here in 2024 this helped and got me to get 200. I decided to do 25-50 at a time and then take a small break (water, bathroom, etc.) each time to allow myself to chill. Eventually I did 30 more afterwards to be sure and I realize that it was a lot easier when I realized that I already did all that I needed to do for 200.
Yeah I used the same method of running to the dots and back to the crater. I this is probably the only way to do it without rage quitting. Just too unpredictable otherwise. Great video fuzz.
I agree mate, I tried doing it the ‘proper’ way and I think I got to about five or six lol.

Another difficult FFX Trophy done! And off- stream. Well done Fuzz this is the best spot to do this. When I did this last year: I counted to 25 dodges and then series of 4 to train. When I got the flow right I scored 8 sets of 25 dodges. SE and their FF Trophies…..cruel

Following your tips I managed the 200 dodges! I messed up a few times, but eventually got the rhythm down. All the troublesome mini-games are done for me now, I just have to finish up some Blitzball to get Wakka's weapon. Then onto sphere grid grinding! Thank you so much for your guides.

Yep my very first attempt I picked a spot and dodged and made it past 100 then messed up. Its definitely possible without this method but this is sooo much easier.
Thanks a lot! Doing this the first two times was exhausting. This third time was much easier. It also helps if you mute the volume. To me, the Thunderplains music is too distracting but with everything silent, it's easier to focus on the flashes.

Great video mate this is same location I did mine just yesterday, even though you know its gonna strike its still tense you have to focus, as I messed up around half way through 😫 luckily with no encounters makes things quicker 👍

Only ever done this once ( when the original game released). Younger me had alot more patience for the grind 😂

I usually suppress horrible memories, but this one is burned into my conscience. I wouldn't willingly do this again even if hironobu sakaguchi himself asked me too.
That's probably why I can't remember if I did or not on the PS2 lol cuz it was suppressed o.0 I'm pretty sure I did though, I usually did the completionist thing even if it takes a long time (not like beating the game 4x for the TRUE ending but... this kind of thing wouldn't intimidate me at that time in my 20s) I just remember using a 'sure fire idiot proof' method like this :P. I also remember this was the one game I had to take breaks on cuz it gave me motion sickness. No seriously I played dozens upon dozens of RPGs for hours even days on MMOs but ONLY FFx on PS2 made me physically ill. Loved the game though xD
For anyone not wanting to bother with ghosts, Geosagneo (sp?), the big fish at baaj temple, drops WEAPONS with no encounter mod. Unique item because it’s normally only found on armor.

I found it a lot easier to put the headphones on and listen to some music while I did this. Just get into a rhythm and don't try to keep count. Failed about four times and got it on the fifth attempt. Kept going for four songs and ended with a count of 257.
Brill, yeah the more you can do to keep the rhythm going the better.
I found a place that consistently strikes twice, but it’s a bit tricky to get the timing right. I’m having issues right now because the wireless controllers on the ps5/4 and switch have the slightest lag that never occurred while using a wired controller. I’ve dodged 200 bolts on ps2 and pc no problem, even switch will work if you attach the controllers to the actual switch. But if you use any wireless options and hit dodge at the correct time, you get blasted. You have to hit the button before the lightning appears making this much, MUCH harder.
I always used a different method, it does not make it as trivial as yours but it can be done the _first_ time through the Thunder Plains. The biggest problem with the minigame is Tidas' movement. Whether he dodges or evades a strike he is thrown downwards to the south which will eventually put him under cover or right out of the plains. To counter this you need to make him move northwards every so often which in turn adds random battles to the mix. *However,* just to the east of the golden zone from the 'easy' method is an area of the minimap where it hooks around the edge. Standing in here means that Tidas is against a southern edge and can't get thrown further. Without worrying about movement you can just concentrate on the flashes, pause the game after every 10 or 20 to take a break.
This is what I _used_ to use though, I've been unable to recreate it on the remaster because I just can't get the very slightly different timing involved.
When I found this work around was an absolute god send for me was great to finally do after 15 years of trying this along with me taking a full 30 hours straight to finally do the chocobo dodge in the calm lands I was finally able to do all celestial weapons and I found a fun lil glitch after getting the 0.00 seconds not only did get the sigil I got the trophy for beating penance 😂😂😂

I prefer this torture over the chocobo catcher for the sun sigil monstrosity. Plus the ditch glitch makes it easier to complete.
Been playing this game for over 20 years
It took me a week none stop back on ps2, during summer break.
After the first strike in the crater, you can double back into it for an immediate second strike. Makes it go faster.

When I got the platinum I would run Tidus over the light patch of ground at the edge of the crater. I also counted up until 200 and then kept going until I finally got hit by a lightning strike at about 250.
The one time I did this legit in on the xbox series S as it has no way to use a save game editor unlike PC and PSx.
I used this exact same spot, when previously I had no chance, however it still wasnt easy, I failed many times, mostly due to the pressure building up the further I got, my successful attempt was when keeping myself distracted by listening to a F1 race whilst doing it, I ended up with nearly 400 in a row, my total dodges to give you an idea of the attempts needed was over 1200. So done this once, never again. Horrible minigame.
Also to note on the series s, there is so much input lag, that if you try to press when it flashes its usually too late, so this method is kind of actually required as it involves you pressing before it flashes.

I did the dodging at this same spot, although I didn't actually count my dodges. What I did is set a timer for around 25-30 minutes and just concentrated on dodging, nothing else. 30 minutes should be more than enough time to get 200 dodges.

This is good advice for this but just to mention in the arena the battles between fiends cost gil. I would recommend to use that to my advantage to capture 10 of each fiend in the area. So if you are low on gil that would be a problem so if you are you are forced to go to that area and grind for it.
I think there is 3 crater positions around the thunder plains and the one that you used is the same one I do. It is best to just get used to the movements and repetitively do that movement for 15-20 minutes. People recommend not counting and doing it for 15-20 minutes its also best not to use sound at all. Do not put on some music because that can mess you up with the movement and possibly struck by lightning.
Is that other end of your position a safe zone? I didn't think of that before also if you get too bored or something. Just push the pause button but still beware the thunder as it still can hit you but this helps for breaks. Another thing that I would like to mention is that if you did 200 dodges at least for me you don't have to dodge lightning on the way back apparently. I got hit on the way back and I got the sigil I didn't think it worked but it did.
This was something I was concerned about, but turns out its not a big issue.

congrats on finishing it man, that is one of the most monotonous challenges in the series, arguably only beat by the jump rope one ... Edit: I have always used a strategy from the oldest Gamefaqs walkthrough for this game
About an hour straight and just keep getting hit. Been trying this for 21 years now since I first played in 2003....one of the most stressful things I've ever done in a game. Timed button pressing of any kind is absolutely not my thing. *EDIT- After a good hour or so, I FINALLY was able to dodge all 200, getting the trophy, and then the Platinum one. I bet if I could add up all my dodges that were failed attempts, its probably a good 5000, maybe way more times. Glad to finally get that finished and move on. I always replay FF10 every few years, and try the lighting thing every time, but for now on, I'm skipping that part....sorry Lulu, you don't really need an ultimate weapon anyways.
I did this way back in the day without any guide, the old fashioned hard way. That sucked. When I got the remaster on PC, I set up a script that would read the light value, and automatically hit the dodge button. I suffered this once, I don't want to have to do it again.
This actually used to be for Kimahris weapon. Also the trick used to be that if you double tapped the dodge button when you saw the light flash you’d dodge it easily; in my testing so far this doesn’t work anymore and Tidus gets hit almost every time
I got it and didn’t even know it. My count was 174 once the lighting actually hit me. But I went and checked the chest for atleast the 150 gift. And I was able to check the chest again after that. And boom I got 200 and didn’t even know. Actually 214

Did it legit first time dodging randoms, Don't recall how long it took me. Second time I used a Gameshark to count 1 as 200
I was having a lot of trouble getting no encounter to drop from Ghosts. I ended up farming One-Eye to get one, I think.

Wait...I have to do it consecutively? F*ck that. I can't do 2 in a row let alone 200. If the Trophy was for 200 total, it'd be acceptable. But 200 in a row? Nope. I'm out. Thanks for the heads up. I'll just finish the game and ignore the trophies in this one then. I'm way too old to be bothered with sh*t quests like these.
What happens if you get the 200 but get hit on your way to get the sigil??
Oh man. I'm glad I managed to complete this one. The jump rope i never made without cheats. The near impossible or at least insufferable achievements of ff9 has put me in a difficult spot. I want to move on to another ff game, but can't because of my ocd for platinum. Simply not being able to complete a single achievement without cheating makes me feel like I can't do it at all...
Also idk if anyone mentioned this but turning off sound helped me plenty at the lightning strikes

I've 100 percented the game except for this. Even with the workaround I still refuse. I never use Lulu anyway.

On ps5 there is input delays cos reasons.
Was gonna go for the plat but this and the chocobo race are way too much for me, ive been at the race for 14 hours and have gotten 8 seconds and after 2 hours of this my best is 15 lightning dodges
The number of times I whiffed this with less than 20 to go...sigh...

There are side quests I don't mind doing as long as they are challenging and fun, repeating some dumb shit over 100x is not one of them, fuck this shit and fuck the jump rope.

I found this challenge annoying. Untill I started to take my time and once I got the rhythm going I was able to do it in like 2 hrs of trying. Again this challenge is annoying I rather do the chocobo race then lightning dodge game

This is why I didn't count at all. I just set a timer for 25 minutes and dodged lightning until it was done. Got well over 200 dodges without even knowing my count until I checked.

These minigames are why I didn't replay FFX very much. Probably 15 FF7 playthroughs for 1 FFX. Sad because this is my favorite game. Just everything was perfect for me...except the tortuous minigames and celestial being locked behind nonsense.
The lightning strikes one is the perfect example of why cheat devices should be allowed on single player games. Imagine if Lulu was your favorite character and you simply were not capable of pulling this off. Maybe your reflexes are bad. Maybe you're handicapped. Maybe the game has awful input lag. etc.
Oh well. I did it once I will never do it again. I would rather grind for 10 hours to make an ultimate weapon than Lulu or Kimarhi's nonsense. Putting a trophy on this is more diabolical than some of the old Tales series trophies. _shudders from Tales ptsd_
omg I did 200 and I didn't get trophy so I kept going.. I got 400+ and was like wtffff?? en then I saw that you had to go to chest.. soxI went to chest ans got hit on my way there I'm like omg I better not have lost it.. I press chest it said congrats on 10 dodges I'm like is this a joke? but then I kzpt clicking the chest and it got 20 50 100 150 200 :)
