    Unfortunately, this channel has been demonetized by RUclips for the third time and therefore the Game Movie Vault has been closed. It was fun for over 10 years but I can no longer afford to spend the time to make these videos without being reimbursed by RUclips. I have started a second channel that focuses on Diablo 4 and I am thinking of starting another separate Game Lore channel very soon.

    In a world full of remakes, this game definitely deserves a reboot. I love the story, the dialogue, psychological elements as well as the symbolism and the fairy tale like atmosphere but the gameplay is excruciatingly painful. I think it would still be considered controversial but at least it'd be better to play. It reminds me of the movie heavenly creatures which has similar themes.

      I'm scared of the remake taking away it's essence (by it changing things like how the story is told, the soundtrack, modifying the scenes or things in the story) so I'd say maybe a remaster?

      The truth is I think the same, although a remake, well I don't know, I think that rule of Rose with graphics from current consoles looked incredible but that would take away the originality and essence even though they have to change many things because this game was considered one one of the most expensive on the PS2 but also one of the most controversial in Europe. Also, if countries like Italy or the United Kingdom see this game again, I think the cycle would be repeated when it was in its European controversy. although we cannot deny that the story and narrative of this game is the most fantastic until the FMVS. Although yes, the combat system is the worst of this game.

      I actually liked the gameplay in Rule of Rose. The combat felt just like Silent Hill, in that the controls are meant to feel a little janky. I talked all about in my video review, and gave the game a 9.5 out of ten. I loved it.

    It's such a shame that such an amazing story is hidden away by pretty mediocre gameplay. If this game was even just ok or decent instead of just plain bad, and wasnt released literally a few months before the PS3 came out, man this game would be in the hall of fame for the story alone, everybody would remember it as much as Silent Hill 2 when it comes to horror games on the PS2

    I bought this abuse simulator upon release, and made the mistake of reselling it after completion. I simply couldn't stand the abysmal combat, and now I regret that I lost such a rare part of my collection. I feel like the game was intentionally designed to be unpleasant, despite its fascinating story, which is in line with its overall theme. I have a legitimate love/hate relationship with Rule of Rose. I adore its plot, but I want to punch it in the face. And all that aside, this is why I'm never having children.
    EDIT: 1:25:22 I straight up never noticed that during my playthrough. So friggin' creepy. It was such a quick shot, but super meaningful. Thanks for all the awesome, intricate editing you did, impanax. Really clarifies the story. Fav'd.

    After watching this, I wonder how much of the story is straightforward. There is a lot of twists.
    I'm theorising that Wendy is not a simple and straightforward character. There's more to her back story that the fans realise. She has a deep connection with Joshua. According to notes by Gregory, Joshua was a sick boy. Gregory likes to make stories for Joshua. Wendy was sick and loved to make the story of the Stray Dog, a characteristics that reminded me of Gregory. I wonder if Wendy is actually the real Joshua and was not pretending to be him when she disguised herself as him.
    There is implications given that Gregory was a cannibal who kidnapped and slaughtered children from the orphanage. This caused him to feel guilt, shame and remorse and that may be why he wanted to kill himself.
    One theory I have in mind is that all the children in the game are victims of the Stray Dog. They didn't die together, rather one by one. Gregory would write stories based on the children he abducted and murdered.
    I think Joshua escaped Gregory's house and stayed at the orphanage disguised as a girl so that Gregory doesn't recognise him.
    Then as Wendy he came to check the house and found Jennifer. Jennifer may have been Gregory's next victim. Wendy saved Jennifer. But then Jennifer found Brown. Wendy did grew jealous but she also seemed to feel repulse at the animal possibly because it was a 'stray dog'.
    Point is, Brown reminded Wendy of Gregory.
    Jennifer probably didn't knew about Gregory's cannibalism but Wendy knew though she kept it a secret to save Gregory from the police. Wendy doesn't likes dogs because of the Stray Dog.
    Though in the game it's made like Wendy invented Stray Dog, it's more likely that Stray Dog was a story Gregory wrote to Joshua (Wendy).
    Anyway, this game has the best mystery story I have ever came across.
    Wished I could play it but I don't have the means. I'll content myself from watching playthroughs.

      brown is gregory that’s why he crawled like a dog when you fight him.
      The crying dog she finds is actually Gregory crying for his dead son Joshua.
      Gregory is crazy and has Jennifer pretend to be Joshua. Gregorys forcing jennifer to live with him as joshua caused a slip personality in Jennifer, that is Wendy. If you look closely at the book she reads in the last chapter 2 little girls are tied up in chairs. One escapes that’s Jennifer, the other that stays is Wendy. There is also a teddy bear that Jennifer give to Wendy, the teddy bear is representing Joshua. It’s more of the ability to pretend to be Joshua, it’s why Wendy was able to trick Gregory into thinking she was Joshua. And it’s why Wendy was able to trick Gregory into killing all the kids, and shoot himself. In the last chapter Jennifer sees Gregory as a dog that she loves, but had to leave behind, so she could go live her life. And Wendy sees Gregory as a sick man, to manipulate and help her gain favor with Joshua who Jennifer.

      @@Jfscloud723 Yes, I did wondered if Brown symbolizes Gregory a few months ago. Though this makes me have more questions. Before the final battle, Wendy mentions that Jennifer fell in love with Brown and that she didn't realize that it was her (Wendy). It's pretty confusing. If Brown was killed then I wonder if Gregory was murdered. But then we see Gregory commit suicide. What is the true story becomes a mystery.

    • @Jfscloud723
      @Jfscloud723 Год назад +2

      Thanks for your time. Ture The game is and remains a mystery as they want for it to be open to interpretation.my belief is the dog collar that she puts on brown is the same one thats on Gregory, Gregory also has other markings on his body.The markings suggest Gregory spending a lot of time being tied up, and beat. Brown was also put in a bag and also beat. Wendy is the youngest and is who Jennifer was before, Gregory forced her to become joushua. Joushua is older and is the middle stage of her life, and Jennifer is who she had to become to escape. Wendy is mad that Jennifer doesn't cares about her past life, as much as she has started to accept brown(Gregory). So Wendy started to abuse Gregory, in anger of Jennifer not standing up for herself. Her past comes back to hunt her Wendys anger that her childhood, was to be forced to live with Gregory. In the end Jennifer expressed her love to Wendy and Gregory,leaving both behind.

      To be fair, the opening/trailer did had a few 'erotic' scenes that gave the impression of some sex theme in the game. However, the game wasn't made for kids and it can be allowed to be played by adults. So there was no problem but I think at that time, there were some games which caused some problems regarding violence and mental health of the gamers and I think that's why there was that ban to release this game.

    Now I have another theory in my mind after reading the W and J Letters from Wiki, observing the timeline of the chapters and seeing all the symbolism. I'm not sure if it's accurate but I feel like to share it here.
    The story I get is the following:
    Jennifer was in a sexual relationship with Wendy, which was a difficult and controversial thing to do at the time this game takes place. When Jennifer was in her late teens, she met a boy who is symbolized with Brown and she wanted him to join in the sexual relationship she had with Wendy. Wendy was against the idea. She wanted only Jennifer and her to be in the relationship. But Jennifer either out of selfishness or cowardice (it was not easy to be homosexual in the 1940s) broke up with Wendy and chose Brown over her (I read that on November 28th Wendy wrote to Jennifer that she will never forgive her for choosing Brown over her. The year is not given for some mysterious reason.). It's implied Jennifer got into a sexual relationship with 'Brown' (not the dog but the man she left Wendy for).
    On 28th of November, Wendy commits suicide after feeling betrayed by Jennifer. The funeral was done for Wendy and was attended by Jennifer, Amanda, Meg, Diana and Eleanor. They were all friends. Knowing that it was Jennifer's infidelity that prompted Wendy to commit suicide, the girls blame Jennifer for the death of Wendy. Jennifer then feels guilt and remorse. She begins to hate herself.
    Life continues and one night on March, Jennifer falls asleep and has a dream. The dream is what we see in the game.
    Now all the events in the dream are false. It is true that Jennifer was an orphan but the orphanage massacre didn't take place at her orphanage. Note that the newspaper article wrote that all the children were killed. It's likely that Jennifer read about Gregory in newspapers articles and her brain invented a tale, a false story in the dream.
    Jennifer is trying to forget what a bad girl she was. She was bad for being an adulterer, for hurting Wendy and not being faithful to her. She is trying to find her innocence. Children are innocent so her brain takes her back to the past. Then her brain invents a story where Wendy is evil and that Wendy did evil things to her. This was all invented just to make Jennifer feel better. Not only Wendy but all the people who blamed her for Wendy's suicide were made villains in the game just to make Jennifer be the heroine. To be innocent and free of guilt and blame. Brown was a pet Jennifer had and he symbolizes the male lover Jennifer abandoned Wendy for. This was done again to make Jennifer innocent and Wendy evil. To make her forget her sin.
    As for what makes me think Wendy commits suicide.....
    1. Wendy's last letter to Jennifer was on 28th November with no year given. November is when the Funeral chapter begins. Jennifer is told the funeral is for her 'dear friend'.
    2. On The Little Princess story book, the little princess is said to have a friend called the Princess of the Red Rose who was always by her side but then she leaves (implying she died.)
    Anyway, point is, all the events in the game are false. It's a dream created by Jennifer's brain to cope with the suicide of Wendy and the blame she receives.
    I'm going to watch the walkthroughs and the movie again and see if there's more to uncover.

    • @nara3601
      @nara3601 Год назад +8

      this theory is very good actually, but i like to think that the game story is exactly how it was portrayed by jennifer's mind with the changes that it made to it (for example, diana standing on top of a chair to demonstrate how intimidated jennifer felt towards her, also the airship, etc).

    • @MissDerpina2606
      @MissDerpina2606 Год назад +2

      @@nara3601 I don't know. There's some contradictions in the dates that makes me doubt how straightforward her dream is.
      For example, Martha has a letter dated 24th November where she mentions seeing Wendy and Gregory engaging in an activity that looked like 'dog-training gone wrong'. Around this time it is implied that Brown was killed. At least the game showed us that after Wendy got Brown dead she went to Gregory and trained him to become Stray Dog.
      Then there is a W & J letter dated 28th November where Wendy is angry at Jennifer for 'still having that dog' and says that she will regret choosing that dog over her. This confused me because Wendy is talking like Brown was not killed yet and that Brown is alive.
      Then there's the fact that dreams have their own interpretations. To suppress a bad memory, dreams will distort the truth and use cryptic symbolism to hide the truth. Sometimes the brain uses alternative means of a word to hide some true facts. For example, a dog has other meanings than to define the animal such as a to describe a wicked, contemptible man or a person who works as police informant. This can suggest that Brown was a man who worked in the police as an informant.
      Same can be said about pigs. One meaning is to describe a greedy, gluttonous person. The other is a derogatory word to describe a police officer.
      Goats can mean a lecherous man or a stupid person.
      The koi fish is also called a carp. Carp can mean to criticize a person for their faults.
      Mermaid has a pun on 'mere' + 'maid'. This can mean a 'mere maid'. Maid can mean a housemaid or a young unmarried girl/woman.
      My point is, Jennifer's dream of her past life is not straightforward and what is the exact truth of her past is hard to know.
      Then again, this is a game, a work of fiction and it depends on the person who created the game. Maybe they didn't intended to hide the past of Jennifer using dream symbolism. Maybe Once Upon a Time revealed the truth of what happened.

      The final scene is probably very symbolic. Jennifer chooses to leave the orphanage behind, and Wendy along with it. The guilt that brought her back to this place needs to be let go.
      But Jennifer will hold onto her memory of Brown, the bright spot of love in her childhood. She doesn't have to keep reliving his death any more, or feel like it's up to him to save her. They can't be together--that would mean staying in this dead place, or in death--but he can be safe and loved in her memory forever, bittersweet as that may be.

    • @MissDerpina2606
      @MissDerpina2606 2 года назад +33

      It kinda looks that way but no. Brown is already dead. The entire game is about Jennifer dealing with her inner trauma in a dreamlike world.
      Locking Brown is a symbolism of protection as well as remembrance. Jennifer said that the most important lesson she learned in her life is to stand up against abuse. She will remember Brown and his loss for the sake of remembering this lesson.
