Well, a Jaguar is ergonomically shaped for comfortable playing. A Les Paul is shaped to look cool in pictures - and to give you chronically inflamed nerves and tendons in your right arm. I'll take a heavier guitar with comfort contours over a lighter plank with hard edges all day, every day. I don't care if a Strat, Jazzmaster, or Jaguar weighs as much as an EDS-1275, I'll take it over any Les Paul. I HATE Les Pauls and Telecasters! Imagine having the worst toothache you ever had, in your forearm, while trying to play guitar.
I was 16 in 1972, and had a short-scale Harmony. Just like a well set-up Mustang, after fret dressing and polishing and smoothing the back of the neck, the low string tension and action made for a buttery feel. Wider bends and faster note flurries were suddenly within reach. It also offered a rounder note attack than regular-scale guitars, helping my first attempts at achieving Clapton’s Cream-era “woman tone”. I was also playing short-scale basses at the time, and at that stage of my development, it felt like cheating!
In my non-expert opinion I would say that it makes sense that you have both because you absolutely fucking KILL IT when you play. I think if there's one thing I've taken away from years of G.A.S and Gear FOMO, one thing that keeps me sane and my wallet happy is that if you use it, you get to keep it. I can definitely hear what you say about the tonal differences but that merely speaks to the love, care, and effort you put into not only making these instruments yours but also using them with great ability. I’ve had a japanese mustang for years as my only electric. It spends all its time at my practice space now (dont wanna travel too much with it in nyc traffic/grime) and i recently acquired a jaguar for my home guitar, specifically cause they’re basically the same lmaoooo. Interesting that you hear so much differences in their tone though!
I actually got into @AudiomoMusic when first looking into offsets, and the fact that Jim also loves the Tele didn't hurt any! His videos offer so much practical perspective on being a guitar player (or just a functional musician!), and it's great to see him get a shout-out here. I think you nailed it here that these two are "close enough" yet "different enough", which is perhaps ideal in particular contexts like you mention. Loved the mix of the two! I always say that comparing them in the mix with the final effect chain is important, as dirt has a way of either bringing out or subduing initial tonal differences of their individual resonant peaks.
The first difference I think of when comparing Jaguar to Mustang is the marketing. The Jaguar was the super luxury, highest priced guitar in the line while the Mustang was the low priced student model. Crazy how much they have in common. Great video! As always. ✌️
played a 1963 fender mustang for years. It was an exceptional guitar and a workhorse. I had a Floyd rose tremelo put on it the week those came out. Had 3 emg active pickups, custom paint. it was a monster. I toured with it in the 1980s until it fell apart. All that is left is the neck plate and photos.
Dang what a demo! And I totally agree on the sound, I don't own either but I knew a bit of what the Jaguar's capable of - it's nice to hear how the Mustang keeps up! It has a nice fullness that just sounds really nice, and definitely complements the kinda scooped jangle of the Jaguar. I know someone who might be big enough for a short scale guitar soon so I'll definitely keep this in mind!
These are not generally my style of guitars, nor was the demo tune my style of music, but the track had me totally invested. Super-fun and kept providing different flavors, I need to learn this! The playing was very consistent, and it's obvious you were having fun. Love that you would change to different pickups/settings frequently, and go right to the other guitar to hear the direct comparison, rather than other videos where it's clear the player mainly wants to wank around. Your thoughts on the guitars' strengths differences were very helpful. Thanks!
If I had to pick one, I'd go with the Mustang Cali. I found the overall tonal balance and sound more to my taste and playing style, as opposed to the Jaguar Aerial and the somewhat brighter tones from the treble side and seemingly slightly more responsive base tones. There's also that weight difference. Seems like that Jaguar is a beast and I've got the left-overs from a spine injury during the Gulf War that really limits the amount of weight I can carry, even seated. LOVED the playing though and this is one of the best full-featured comparison videos I've ever seen on YT, let alone when you're talking about comparing the Mustang to the Jaguar. Just amazingly AWESOME stuff.
WOW! What a cool video I used to have a 1963 Jaguar and I used to dream about the Mustang from the Catalog when I was a teen ager. Music has made us happy our whole life Thanks Nisebelle
That Jag sounds a lot like my stock ‘97 Japanese Jag. Very musical highs but a nice syrupy rhythm circuit to round it out. Your playing is fantastic, a joy and inspiration to listen to, thank you!
Glad to see I'm not the only one out there that mods the crap out of everything. I have been on the fence about picking up a Mustang for a while now, but you sold me. Fun video, nice playing!
@BlindingSun_ No, not yet. I decided to make it my birth year guitar, as a 73 Mustang is cheaper than a Strat, Tele or Les Paul, but it's still going to take a bit of saving. Especially for a nice one.
I have a pair of modded mustangs in different pickup configurations (hums and singles). I love them so much. Now I need a jag! They fit me me better than a jazzmaster does. Thanks for the video!
Absolutely love the main demo track, it just builds and builds, and then just explodes when the fuzz kicks in. Top work, Nisebelle. Don’t have either a Mustang or a Jag (or a strat or that matter), and rely on Teles and LP Juniors ... but the temptation sure has been seeded!
Very awesome demonstration. Thank you. This helped me make a decision which I want to build. I love both, but if I had to choose one, I love the timbre of the Mustang the best. (Taking note the difference in body wood, pickups, and possible circuitry chokes). I think even if I could get the same Mustang sound from the Jaguar, There is something about the simplicity of The Mustang. Thank you again!
my opinion of the two were pretty much identical to yours. Never thought about owning either of these guitars as i typically play my HSS strat or my more metal oriented guitars but the way they both sounded with that OD pedal just made me fall in love. i may be adding two more guitars to my collection. Also those song you were playing were so lovely!
Not for nothing, but I love when people name their stuff (obvi, in this case, your guitars). Great video! Also, +1 for rec'ing the Audiomo's JG vs. Mustang vid... thanks!
This is totally awesome. I've gone the more traditional route of Strats (for round sounds) and Teles (for that high clarity bite), but it's so cool to be introduced to the other guitars in Fender's line this way. Thanks!
It's also that Jaguar is Treble based like a Tele, while the Mustang has Strat pickups that have been leveled to their bobbins, making for a super full sounding little shortie. It definitely is my fave because it compares to strats better than any other offsets imo. I mean a Jazz sounds way different again than any other Fender mentioned, in a great way, it's mellow yet LOUD. That's a strange and great thing to hold and play, loud but it comes off as as so smooth and chill tone wise. Great for Fuzz and other quacky effects. Still, Mustang is my fave for the rounded, overall can play anything sound.
❤❤Woooa Fantastic you are tops with all the tech plus A1 player. Also u r a superb presenter. I not only enjoy but learn and sit here in amazement watching such a beautiful person and woman as u. Huge thnx from Romania
Amazing demos! Mustang has a more focused midrange that cuts through really well in the mix. Both sound fantastic really, especially with those amp tones and the guitar mods you’ve made
Cali has punch and great low end. The pickup is putting through the sound of the string with single coil character but the pickup and I think the 250k potentiometers let us hear it moving air as well; that's what I think is the main difference between the 2 guitars. I think this sounds especially good muting the strings and really lets playing dynamics come through. Aeriel has the 1 meg sound that's dry and crispy which interacts with reverb differently than other guitars. I've never owned a guitar with the foam mute but played one at the store and they are awesome. When the discussion about owning multiple guitars comes up, a lot of times the go-to explanation is that different pickups sound different. One of the less-discussed things is that, especially with Fender guitars, different models have different bridge systems. I would say that's the main differentiating factor in play feel. Hearing the demo at the end really proves the point you're making; they are alike enough to stand in for each other, and when played together, become one, but are different enough to justify owning both. Some people have a back up for redundancy and some, for variety, and this combination serves both purposes. Very cool composition at the end.
I always like mustangs even though their trem system takes a bit of work (great once you get it right). I think the angled pickups help the bass keep up on short scale instruments which tend towards bright
One of the big sonic differences in regards to the cutting brightness of the jag, as compared to the warmer rounded sound of the mustang, is the volume pot values. That 1meg volume pot on the jag (just like the jazzmaster), really makes them more trebly sounding. The 250k in the mustang definitely cuts a lot of that higher treble. So a simple mod for any mustang owner that wants to brighten them up would be to raise the value of their volume pot. 500k for a little jump, and 1meg to definitely bring out more of that jag style brightness.
Great comparison video. The 2, no 3 guitars, you mention are also my 3 favorites. The bass vi is just incredible sort of an older sibling of the 2. While jags are my favorite guitar, I've gotta mention teles as well since they too have amazing jangle and lows depending on how you use and wire them. My first guitar was an 80s squier Tele which I no longer own and my second a black 62 jag which is still unmatched by any other guitar I've ever owned. Honestly that guitar has lower lows and shriller highs than any of the jags I've ever owned. The pickups are superior to anything I've found thus far. And for the $300 I paid for her in 1992, incomparable to any of the reissues I've owned. She just sounds better and part of that is the age and over wound pickups but modding newer ones comes close-ish. The mustang is a fab little guitar and I love how you use it in your music. They are close enough to interchange but you are def itely right about the mustang being a darker sounding creature. My friends 65 is also similar to my 62 jag in it's flat out amazing soundthat newer ones don't quite get but that's audio snobbery and also being lucky enough to be old enough to have gotten them before they became the go to indie guitars. The loar jag pickups do sound very close to the old ones btw. My 2001 LPB Japan jag is really similar to yours sound wise but your mustand sounds amazing. I really like the mods and how you play. Killer tune and video. Thanks.
Just dusted off my 1964 mustang and have enjoyed your video and terminology update. Just retired and will try to catch up along with building calluses.
First time here... Sometimes RUclips algorithms get it right! I have both also... Mustang hasn't had any mods to it (yet?) '65 MIJ reissue. Jag' 97 jg 66 with antiquities and staytrem, so they do sound a fair bit different, although they often tread similar paths. Mighty fine playing and great video. It's clear you have put a lot of time into this vids creation. Thank you!!! I did have trouble getting used to the names of your guitars and all of the 'she's', but no doubt that's just your way. 😎👍 Cheers 🎸🎸🎸
Hey! loving this channel. I'm thinking about getting a 24" scale guitar as my next little "pretend I'm a tech" project. Found a Squier Classic Vibe 70's Jag a few blocks from me that I might trade a pedal for. I think that might be a fun place to start because of the convenience. But this video confirmed that ultimately I'd like a more "vintage" spec'd mustang. Anyway, thanks for the videos!
what a tightly packed punch of info and stellar ear catching licks. i concur with your findings - you need both and they compliment, I find my '68 mustang is blooming, woody and barky, my mij '94 jag cutting, biting, trebly, and searing.
Thanks for the great discussion, dynamic playing, the awesome layering of guitar parts to show *how* they can work together, and ESPECIALLY for not boring me to tears with blues riffs as stale as a week-old 7-11 hot dog warmed in a microwave. Subscribed!
Very cool video. Love your content. Been a fan for a while. Also don’t know if anyone has said it but you’re a total “Bad Ass” on guitar! Such a unique original style and your feel is amazing!! Love it!!!
Mascis Squire w Frailin noiseless and Squire Classic vibe Jag with Kinman noiseless both festooned with Woody’s “Masterful” trem and vibrato units over here. Both punch WAY above their weight. Fantastic playing and compositions Gawdesse. Weapons grade stuff! Thanks for the inspiration.
Really great playing demos, especially in the Sisters section! Kind of a breath of fresh air from all the blues, rock, and metal I normally hear during guitar demos online (not that I don't like that stuff, just gets kinda samey)
I have an MIJ traditional 60’s pickups and I love the guitar itself, it’s neck is arguably ideal as a rhythm player, however I do find the stock pickups to be piercingly bright so I am getting some fralin jag pickups installed. At one point I owned an MIJ mustang and might have to buy another one but also am eyeing a p90 equipped Les Paul. I definitely have an affinity for single coil fender guitars and own a jv mod 60’s strat with 56/62 pickups installed, a modded vintera nocaster which I swapped bodies out for nitro relic finish along with lollar special t pickups, an MIJ traditional 60’s Jazzmaster with black bobbin lollar Jazzmaster pickups, a player series fsr 50’s strat with 50’s fat pickups installed, an American vintage II Jazzmaster and an Eastman t486. I have too many guitars as it stands but I love how each inspires me individually.
Nisebelle i love the sound of both Cali and Ariel. Never thought i needed another Fender but here we are! Love your very technical style of playing. You are amazing ❤️
the song comparison you did reminds me of FLCL and im here for it! also the jag neck is so twangy and i love it haha. both sound incredible and your playing is top tier!
I listened to the comparison twice. Once with quality over ear headphones and one time with not so high quality earbuds. The strange thing is that with the earbuds the mustang felt more balanced and easy on the ears where as the jaguar had annoying highs. However with headphones those highs were actually pleasant and it sounded sparkly like listening to a good strat on the neck pickup. Basically when you have better quality stuff when listening the jag sounds better to me.
Hi there! Lurking viewer for your mod/build vids but your playing in this video made me want to reach out to my guitar so much. Thanks for the inspiration. Keep on rocking and have a wonderful holiday!
love it. i owned both too 78' Mustang and a Greco copy Jag.. i should try this, put em' both on recording. great song there to demo how these two compliment each other.
Both these guitars are sexy AF. I haven't an electric guitar in 2 years since I...ugg...regrettably had to sell my dad's original '60's Fender Duo Sonic II because when life hands you lemons, you have to sell things you never thought you would have to part with. That said, I'm looking to purchase 1 or 2 new electrics. I've always been huge fan of Fender - the sound, feel and look of their electrics. I would LOVE to have both a Jaguar AND a Mustang. I MIGHT end up purchasing both, but they would be the newer models. I can't even afford 1 vintage '60's or '70's guitar, so I'm willing to settle for brand new. I was going to get a Strat just because as a Fender fan I almost feel obligated to own one at least once in my life. But I saw another video where she talked about how even though the Strat is basically a perfect guitar, it's just not designed for her play style...and that's kind of where I stand, as well. And honestly, I actually prefer the sound and feel of a Jaguar and Mustang to the Strat. And as long as I'm keeping it 100 here, I also superficially like the look of them over the Strat. It's funny because when I decided I was going to buy a new guitar I was 100% set on buying a strat. Then I started looking at Jags and found one that I absolutely loved. Then I thought maybe I would buy 2 guitars, so I could have the Jag that I REALLY want and still have the Strat, as well. And then I started looking at the Mustangs and all hell broke loose in my brain. Guitars...Am I right?
I love offsets. The Johnny Marr signature Jaguar is pretty interesting, the pickup configuration makes it very versatile. Besides, I always wanted a Kurt Cobain style Mustang, just for the sake of it. I already have a modified Squier Telecaster Custom and a Ibanez AG85 Hollowbody. I can't justify owning more guitars really, specially because i modded the tele for being the most versatile guitar it could considering which styles I play. I am very happy with it, the neck is very comfy and the pickups sound aweome. I liked your Mustang more, I love all the sounds you can get from Mustangs :)
The JagStang is pretty much Kurt’s Mustang. It’s like a Mustang with a humbucker and a makeshift Jaguar body. I’ve had one since I was 15. I’ve always thought it was like best of both worlds but, nah, it’s a Mustang with a humbucker lol. So highly recommend that if you’re looking for a unique Mustang for Kurt’s sound.

I often get bored by average or high end blues playing in demos. Loved yours ! sweet music + smile is the key.
I always like mustangs even though their trem system takes a bit of work (great once you get it right). I think the angled pickups help the bass keep up on short scale instruments which tend towards bright
Hey man, I love the Mustang and the Jag, love the Witch hat knobs on the Stang, looks awesome 👌🏼
Awesome playing too, was such a vibe.
I didn't know you could take so many sounds out of two single coil guitars! The tracks are great also!
@leomilani_gtr Especially without a center position pickup.
Thanks for this, really instructional! Also you are a fantastic guitarist- really like your style ❤
The neck on the cali is beautiful, you can see its figuring from the side. Love your videos nisebelle- informative and entertaining, keep it up.
Your playing is stunning. Some of the most beautiful demo music I've seen.
Let’s goooo 4am nisebelle upoad
I luv the jag, maybe the mustang for me another day
First time here...
Cheers 🎸🎸🎸
you're playing is exactly what i want mine to sound like!! thanks for this informative video
They sound so much alike, proving that the hands are a Hugh factor in tone...
I love my Mustang. It is so nice to play.
Hey! loving this channel.
Great pics from the shoot the other day. Digging it.
Nice playing! These are beautiful guitars. Very unique and sound awesome.
Love it!!!
I loooooooove your playing style. Damn. I get some the pillows vibes from it. You've also made me want a Jaguar even more than I already did.
I just love your playing and composition in these songs. Great music!!
brilliant comparison / demo !
I just came across your channel. Your overview was great. All the best.
Great Demo, in your hands these are stellar. The offset sisters demo reminds me of Yvette Young, and I also loved the Mus. vs. jag demo too.
Definitely loved the mustang with the antiquity IIs and the detail look at both
Nisebelle i love the sound of both Cali and Ariel. Never thought i needed another Fender but here we are! Love your very technical style of playing. You are amazing ❤️
Love your playing, love your analysis! :)
I love your chord progressions wow! And cool guitars too!!
the song comparison you did reminds me of FLCL and im here for it!
also the jag neck is so twangy and i love it haha. both sound incredible and your playing is top tier!
Haha that makes sense! I grew up watching FLCL and listening to The Pillows nonstop - they're still one of my favorite bands!
@@nisebelle Manabe used to play a mustang, did that push you to get it? getting a mustang soon as well, in part because of those guys
Loved the demo song and the fact that you looked like you were having a blast playing it 👍
I listened to the comparison twice.
I had to rewind twice to check the weight of that Jag! You certainly make its cast iron body sound good regardless.
Alright, you've convinced me. I need a Mustang!
I was wondering what guitar to get next, and you’ve sold me on the Mustang. It will be a nice bit of different to my teles and strats.
The standard tele positions sound literally identical between the 2 guitars. But all the unique Mustang and Jaguar tones are super cool
Babe wake up new nisebelle video just dropped!
Really really really love you playing and your music.. thank you so much 🙏🫶
What great playing!! Very fun!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
@@DaveTadros I've found some Squier CV Mustangs for a nice price. The issue is that I don't really trust the tunning stability of those bridges xD have you ever tried any Squier Mustangs? Thanks :D
NISEBELLE SQUAD!!!!!!!
