- With Mordheim's recent explosion of popularity, and Halloween around the corner, your friendly neighborhood Inquisitor has set his sights on the infamous Cursed City. In this vox-log we will journey into the grimdark fantasy setting of horror and madness, as I document the Lore, Design Philosophy, and Kitbashing Techniques to one of the game's most debased warbands...the dreaded Cult of the Possessed!
"Hills erupted with the hymns and chants of those defiled by the touch of the Dark Gods...and in that moment I knew the true meaning of terror."

Amazing video! The wait was worth it. Fun from start to end. Thanks for the shout out my man!
I am humbled by your praise my friend, your series was a driving force of inspiration for this project. Glad the wait was worth it, more content on these sinister lads is on the way!
I did a possessed warband of fishmen back in the olden days of Mordheim. I used a river troll as the base model for my possessed and sculpted a catfish style head from greenstuff. I used hobgoblin sneaky gits for the dark souls and covered their heads with greenstuff netting. I used the dark emissary from the Albion campaign as the leader and saurus lizard men with greenstuff fish heads as the beast men.
That sounds like an amazing group of kitbashed cultists. I like the choice of kits you used as well. Funny enough, I actually was thinking of using lizard men heads on my Beastmen in the early planning stages but couldn’t get the parts for it - so I can totally picture how cool your beast-boys look.
@@inquisitornero I got a best war band for them at a GW HQ Mordheim tournament. There only 6 participants, 3 of them from our club ;-)
@@jasongaylard2547 Congrats mate! Regardless of the amount of participants, a win is a win -- as you took the time and effort to compete. Sounds like you have a solid gaming club as well. I tip my hat to you and the crew.
I made my wordbearers 40K warband cult of possessed too! Love the kitbashes it’s given me more idea for my cultists
A fitting theme for the Word Bearers, they sound awesome. Glad I could be of some inspiration for your cultists...go forth and create!
I was feeling like there wasn't a ton of the aquatic themes you mentioned when you started, but man did you deliver when it came to the heroes (which is where it counts!) Great guide to getting some inspiration and insights for new mercenaries in Mordheim 🤘
Why thank you! I agree, the heroes tied things up nicely….especially the spookler fish familiar 😉😏
Best warhammer content I've been recommended in a while! Earned a subscriber, can't wait to see more!
Thank you so much! Glad to have earned your sub. Part 2 coming soon 👀
What an amazing start! As someone who's just plunging into my first Undead warband, this video is full of great inspiration!
Thank you so much! I wish you nothing but great success with your Undead warband 🤘🏻🤘🏻. I’ll have more Mordheim content in the future 😉
This is awesome, very inspiring!
looking forward to seeing them painted!
Thank you so much! Glad to hear the video was inspiring. Working on Part 2 as we speak. Can’t wait to share it with you 🤘🏻🤘🏻
@@inquisitornero Awesome! Keep up the great work! Really liked the video style and editing too!
Possessed sounds like the perfect warband to kitbash, considering all those dark gifts! I’m excited for your future projects, Trench Crusade looks sick!
Thank you! Working on finishing up Part 2 as I’m typing this. I got some fun stuff in the pipeline that I’m excited to share.
Trench Crusade is going to be a barn burner of a game! So hyped ⚔️🤘🏻🤘🏻⚔️
You're a content creator I never knew I needed. Love your delivery. Keep'em coming.
Thank you! It is my absolute pleasure to bring more content your way. *tips hat* 😉
Hey man just wanted to say youve earned your self a sub and my appreciation your video have qaulity, humour and advice that mixes so well can't wait to see you blow up you deserve it
Thank you so much for the kind words and the sub, it means a lot. I’m glad that you appreciate the attention to quality - I always strive to give my audience that best. I got a couple of big projects in the works, keep an eye out 🤘🏻🤘🏻.
Great video! Also gotta say I LOVE the Darkest Dungeon inspired art!
Thank you so much! Always nice to meet a fellow Dungeon respecter 🫡
I’ve always kinda felt Warhammer (both IPs) is just black metal nerd stuff, and I absolutely get that feeling from this channel: just nerding out with darkest dungeon and evil dead references while painting cool dudes. Cheers!
Sounds like I’m doing my job correctly ⚔️🤘🏻🤘🏻⚔️
Thank you for your praises, more diabolical content on the way.

What an amazingly produced video. Easy sub.
Honored to have earned your sub!
You did an awesome job with this one. I love it.❤
Thank you so much! Really glad you liked the outcome. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series.
The return of the KING
You are way too kind fellow hobby heretic! Thank you!
Beastium Miniatures are also amazing for anything like this :-)
1000% agree! They are in a slightly different scale (32mm as opposed to 28mm Heroic) but it’s only a minor difference.
@@inquisitornero Yeah I know things can be scaled up and down easily if you want to anyway or if you mostly have newer models most are that 32mm these days. Its rare outside of small companies that do their own stuff in house :-) not a big deal either way really as long as they are badass ha
@@yagsipcc287 agreed!
Maaaan, I really want to say I’m incredibly inspired to build my possessed warband now (and I am) but I really just want yours. Incredible work.
Humbled by such praise! While I cannot part with my boys (took too long to make them haha) I highly encourage you to go forth and raise your own warband of deranged lunatics. The Dark Gods will it!
Man this is GREAT i loved this so much waiting for part 2
Awesome and thank you! Finishing up part 2 now 😉
It's good to see a new video on this channel. But it seems our game club is an outlier. Me and a lot of the Horus Hersey players plan to delve into the Underhive these next few weeks. (Maybe just a step away from a Mordheim campaign?)
Haha before you know it, you’ll be trading your sci-fi mining gear for medieval battle axes. I love the Necromunda, sounds like your club is on a good path…and let’s just say there may or may not be an Inquisimunda project on the horizon 👀.
Reading old Felix and Gotrek books, Beastmen are often described as half-snake or half-bird. Turns out they even made models for these more peculiar beastmen! Shame GW decided to retcon that
They need to return to that aesthetic....it's wayyyyyyyy more interesting. Plus I think that if they did approach the Beastmen from that angle, GW could make some cool kits with interchangeable parts that could give players the ability to create some pretty unique looking units.
It's not so much GW retconning the variety of beastmen, there were lots of kinds in the old catalogues. They're just a big strain on production for little return. There's a reason those non-goat beastmen fetch so much on the second hand collector market, hardly anyone bought them and they're rare as shit because of it.
@@username12120 I'm willing to bet if GW did bring back the "various strains of beastmen" they would sell like crazy. Though I think that could be the case with any of old concepts that initially didn't sell well when the company was younger -- because nostalgia and what not.
I'm working on assembling my Beastmen Raiders warband. Madison, WI has a growing scene.
Glad to hear you have a growing scene in Madison, that’s awesome. May your Beastmen Raiders reap the spoils of war and become infamous across the Badger State!
Awesome video! Can’t wait to watch you work your magic!!
Thank you! Ya can't wait to share with you all.
More content please!! Great work
Thank you! Working on Part 2 now 🤘🏻🤘🏻
The constant references make me want to hit you with my scepter(a stick with a rock tied to it) good kitbashes tho!
But would I still get my +3 armor save 🤔
Glad you liked the kitbashes.
Cool video! I'm starting a game with some friends soon and my buddy is running Cultists. This ks my first actual minis game and it's amazing to see what an experienced vet is capable of!
Thank you! Awesome to hear you will soon be entering the Cursed City of Mordheim. You’ll have a blast. It’s a great game. The best approach to Mordheim is to almost treat it like an RPG. Theme and story are king. Good luck 🫡
These are so awesome! I might take inspiration from this video 😫
Please do! It would be an honor 🫡
Also this is the first time I’m seeing anything on Pre-weathering! Once I get the materials I’ll definitely try it myself before priming!
It’s addicting. Do it once and you’ll be hooked…which in this case is a good thing 😉.
Cool video, awesome minis! Also i've never heard of pre-weathering. Cool effects though. Ill try it out. Maybe a more in depth video on that topic would be helpful for many tho?
All credit to Dark Ages Workshop for the pre-weathering technique. However I am happy to do a deep drive video into the subject and share additional insights based on my own experience.
Great video man!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it 🤘🏻🤘🏻. More to come.
That is one good looking warband!
Thank you! Can't wait to show them off painted.
great video! new subscriber... cant wait to dive into to the rest of your process vids.. ( side note..why the hell had i never heard of pre-weathering before this...) thank you!
Well I'm honored to have earned your sub. Yes, pre-weathering is awesome! All credit to Dark Ages Workshop for that hobby technique (I have his channel linked the description). I've been experimenting with pre-weathering for awhile now and I'll hooked. I also use pre-weathering in my Blackshield video, so give it a watch if you want an additional demonstration of the process.

I found the video only today, run immediately to check the miniatures from rotten factory, and suddenly discover that the artist is not anymore in business... 😢
Great video and gave me loads of inspiration to build/scratch build my warband 😊
So from my conversations with Rotten Factory it sounds like he’s just taking a break to recharge for a few months. So pretty sure he will be back - just a question of when. Regardless I’m glad you are inspired to build your own warband! ⚔️⚔️⚔️

@@giuseppecorino1309 Yes, skirmish wargaming is where it is at for me as well. You should also check out Planet 28 for sci-fi games. Great system!
Excited to release part 2. Just putting on the final touches.
@@inquisitornero I've recently bought Kill Sample Process, The Last War and Majestic 13. Looking forward to exploring the games and I've recently started as well to play Space Station Zero Loads of conversions ahead and loads of 3D printing and surfing the internet and shops (even Aliexpress) to find adequate models 😁
Your warband looks so classy.
For newbies I would recommend the Northstar Frostgrave and Oathmark figures. They do not have any gunpowder weapons, but they kitbash easily with older GW Empire. They Gnolls could even proxie as Skaven (they are also as ugly as the plastic Skaven of that era).
Disgustingly classy I hope haha. I agree, those kits have a lot of utility and would work well in a Mordheim kitbash - I even thought of picking them up for this project but ultimately settled on the rotten factory minis because for me they scratched that “old school / rustic” look I was aiming for. Still, I might have to do something with the Frostgrave and Oathmark kits in the future 🤘🏻🤘🏻.
So glad i got my old mordheim minis before they discontinued the range. Shame I didn't get the various releases made by Fanatic tho.
Good on you mate! I do love the old scuplts. They all have loads of character and when painted in the grimdark style look especially enticing.
We know who the shadowlord is. Its Bellakor.
HP Lovercraft was not the one who invented the King In Yellow.
Those conversions are ace! Well done.
On the Shadowlord, yes, but I was speaking about him from an “universe perspective 😉.
The King in Yellow, true, this was Chambers that invented him, however Lovecraft was a fan of Chamber’s work and incorporated the King in Yellow / Haster into his own writings. I believe he talks about the King in Yellow in his essay “Supernatural Horror in Literature”. I was being extremely general - sorry RW Chambers. I see you’re a man of good taste *tips hat*
Thank you so much! They are certainly gonna need someone to fight in Mordheim 👀…..hmmm.
All the bashes are great, but I really like the mutant. The hunched posture and slumped claw arm makes it feel like it's human body isn't designed for whatever mutations it's blessed with. I can see it complaining about dragging the heavy claw through the city and some unseen musculature twist and spasms beneath its clothing.
I want to try something similar now, but instead of just using the gaunt summoner's head I want to chop and "eye stock" off and jet it out of the side of the head. Feels like the asymmetrical designed might help depict the idea that the mutations are more violent, and less purposefully. 10/10 kit bash
Thank you! Yes, mutants always look the best when it looks as if their body is struggling with the mutation. It adds a sort of disgust and pity factor. A sick and twisted parody of life if you will.
I really like your idea! Go for it 🤘🏻🤘🏻
I always enjoy watching a good kitbashing
Most excellent! Happy to oblige 😉
Awesome video man these turned out awesome 👍
Thank you so much! Can’t wait to show them off fully painted.
I loved this game. Now, to find others to return to Mordheim with me.
Raise the banners and send forth the ravens...the Damned City awaits!
Mmm Mordheim and good music, here have a sub.
Thank you sir! Much appreciated. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Here I am in 2024 getting into mordheim. This right here is why warhammer WILL survive long past games workshop.
100% agreed!
when Beetlejuice 2 came out I decided to make a Carnival of Chaos Warband themed around Beetlejuice
I 1000% support this idea!
I see beastmen, I like!
One of the coolest unit concepts of any fantasy / sci-fi setting. A must have 😉
I will say GW has done a pretty good job on the undead. I got the majority of my Undead, witch hunters, and mercenaries from the cursed city board game. They all had an extreme grimdark look to them. The soulblight gravelords fr9m AOS are also gleaming with grimdarkness, but other than them, the pickings are slim for outright buying models with the grimdark esthetic.
Also, none related, but I am using models from the bloodborne board game for my other, which hunters and mercenaries, they look amazing and grimdark.
Agreed - I actually have some GW witch hunters on the way to my hobby desk 😉.
The good thing is, that for the in-game units that don’t have a great GW official plastic counter parts you can supplement that problem with creative kitbashing, 3D printing, or third party sculpts and get beautiful results much like I did (note I didn’t need to 3D print anything for this particular project).
I actually think that Mordheim is unique in that it encourages you to exercise your creativity, and pushes you to create unique warbands through kitbashing (be it official parts or otherwise). I like that about the current state of the game.
I would note that the lack of GrimDarkness in a lot of the newer GW models is not just a design issue but a paint job issue as well. Some models have a great low fantasy design that are then ruined by the Eavy Metal paint style.
This is an awesome video
On the subject of Beastmen, I wanted to do something different for my Slaangors I got and what I wanted to do was to embody beauty grace and elegance, and so I wanted to give my Slake horn the Head of a Horse (like something you'd see from an 80's sword and sorcery film or game or like the tikbalang) but I was having a hard time finding something in the right scale, maybe if I get a second box I'll see if maybe there is something I can get 3D printed but hey.
Thank you so much! Working on finishing Part 2 as we speak 🤘🏻🤘🏻.
I like your conversion idea, and I see your dilemma. What I’d do is hunt around on eBay for a horse head bit from GW (that way you can with some confidence assume the horse will be in a similar scale). 3D printing would be the secondary option of course - I’m sure that you’ll be able to find an appropriate part without too much hassle. Good luck with your kitbash! May the hobby gods favor you!
Nice. IwI liked and subscribed, always BM. One thing though, you've done so much so why no basing?
Thanks for the like and sub. Yes, Black Metal ist Krieg! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Basing is something I do towards the end of a project as a separate step. You can see that the warband is based in Part 2 of the series.
I shot enough footage for a basing guide but it’s a pretty basic scheme. Regardless, if you want to see that guide let me know!
They look so cool
Thank you, glad you like them!
You got my sub at spookler fish 😅👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
He sends his regards 😉🫡
Also, who does your art? Your darkest dungeon dude looks sick.
Thank you! All credit to Dismas21. You can find him on Fiverr 😉.
Loved the kit bashing and inspiration, but it feels like your total price tag to make your hybrid "gang" kit would cost around the same silly prices that one would see on Ebay to purchase the original metal sculpts.
Appreciate the work, but I'm still getting the same sticker shock feeling that I had a year ago when I thought about doing my own Cult of the Possessed kit bashing.
Ya I can see where you are coming from, and yes you can make the argument that my expenditures clocked in or around the example price I used in the video. I would counter with a couple points.
The first being that I built a very large warband. You wouldn’t even be able to field the total units I built as it would exceed the allowed point cost for a starting Mordheim warband. You aren’t going to start off with all your hero units and all of your henchmen units at your disposal on the tabletop- so like with any army this example of what is possible over time. I just wanted to knock it out all at once and have options.
I also used a lot of parts I had lying around from other projects. I think the only thing I bought to complete this project was the Chaos Legionnaires and the Rotten Factory guys…maybe the Gutrot model as well? The rest of the stuff was just bits and models I had on hand from other projects. I’m not sure how I would classify those bits with regards to “total project cost” 🤷🏻♂️. There’s also the scarcity issue with the original white metal models which can drive up the price and push new players to look to other kits (something I wanted to highlight in my choice of models).
You could probably do fairly well cost wise on eBay if you look for contemporary kits and bits for single models - or even better with a 3D printer 😏. But like I said in the beginning, I get where your coming, it’s a completely fair point. Ultimately it boils down to how many cultists you want to build and how many bits you want to use in your conversion.
With regards to your warband, just start small, maybe with the Magister and a couple of henchmen and see where your creativity take you. My cultists and I are rooting for you 🤘🏻🤘🏻.
What about using some of your per-weathering rust FX on all of the chaos runes instead of filling them in with putty?
I guess it sorta depends what sort of look you are going for. For me it was the whole "magic weapon scarcity" angle but the effect you mentioned could also look really cool. Thank you for the great suggestion, I'll have to try it out on a future project ;)
@@inquisitornero I was thinking less magic weapon, and more symbols carved in the surface of a rusty blade, though it might have just come out looking like a Nurgal magic weapon.
@@TheMichaellathrop Totally get it, that would look amazing indeed (speaking of Nurgle it would work well in the Carnival of Chaos warband). I'll have to give it a go on a future Mordheim warband -- I do want to revisit another "Chaos" group........after the Witch Hunters that is!
The council of thirteen approves this message. 🐀
By the Horned Rat’s will!
Once Old World lands I hope to high heaven that they give Mordheim the same treatment as Necromunda. If you think about it AoS is to 40K as Mordheim is to Necromunda, they’re almost completely comparable. If you look at it even further, Warcry vs kill team and Horus Heresy vs Warhammer OW deepens the trend. Somewhere on some executive level a GW staffer must be noting the upswing in interest for Mordheim.
So you’d be excited to see GW and a completely different creative team get rid of all the expanded rules, lore, factions, scenarios, etc. that a passionate and thriving community created; and replace with something that would inevitably be over priced, over monetized, and have a different vision for the game/setting? Seems like you missed a key point of what I was getting at in the opening monologue.
You have everything you need rules wise on Broheim.net, and you can use whatever miniatures you want.
What do you think about tarantulous brood/splintered fang designs for Mordheim, nice ones or still too on the nose ?
I’d say it depends on a couple of factors.
1) theme of the warband.
2) conversion / kitbash work done to said warband.
By themselves, they are a little on the nose lacking that “Mordheim Aesthetic” in my opinion; granted I don’t have the kit and am not that familiar with the sculpts. However depending upon how you use the kit, they could look pretty and work well in the setting. What warband are you using them for?
@@inquisitornero cult of the possessed for vanilla, both of them kinda fit only the weird cult aesthetic, Im not familiar with homebrew, and don't think I will engage with it in the near future, so yeah...
So when I say theme, I’m talking about how my cult boys have that aquatic / fishing town aesthetic. This also includes the warband backstory and how they view The Shadowlord. For the brood or splinter fang you can lean into a very “feral” cult of the possessed - a cult that has been living off the wilds and woodlands surrounding Mordheim, that is the first thing that comes to my mind.
I believe I mentioned this in the video but I’ve found when it comes to Mordheim and the use of WarCry kits, removing the extra “flashy” details on the models help bring the WarCry miniatures down to that “low fantasy” Mordheim aesthetic.
Regardless, best of luck on your Mordheim journey!!!
Are you going to tackle the carnival of chaos?
Maybe...I first want to do Witch Hunters and possibly one of the community created warbands. The carnival could be a great project, however I'd need to figure out how I could convert and paint the warband to set them apart from what you usually see floating around. I'll give it some thought 😉
Pretty nice channel you have. Mordheim popularity is great but my true love is Path to Glory. Imo the cult of the possessed dont have the same impact as a chaos champion and his warband.
Btw you were on point mordheim is indeed used a lot ij invete only events specially in east europe.
Thank you! Glad my little realm has peaked your interest.
Path of Glory is a great game, but comparing it Mordheim is like comparing apples to oranges. They are two completely different animals. Both have their merits, but both are completely different in just about everything else.
Maybe I'll do a Path of Glory series down the line. I do love me some old school chaos vibes!
Bela’kor seems the most likely suspect for a Shadowlord.
Indeed, I followed-up the Shadowlord / Be'lakor connection question in Part 2 of this series.
If I remember correctly, the shadow lord turned out to be belakor.
Yes and no, to my knowledge in the original material of the game and the surrounding publications (rules expansions, etc.) the identity of the Shadowlord is kept ambiguous on purpose to allow players to exercise creative freedom over the artistic choices surrounding their Cult of the Possessed warband.
However in a Gotrek and Felix novel, the duo travels to Mordheim and encounters Be’lakor who himself claims that he is the Shadowlord (another form of the Daemon). Now the question is whether you take this as fact, or is Be’lakor lying, or is the author just having some fun….that’s up to you.
I personally don’t think game designers intended to expose the Shadowlord’s identity to the player base - on a personal note I like not knowing who he is and prefer theorizing what he could be (see the Lost Legions in 40k). Thus I’m approaching it from what is listed in the original lore for the Cult of the Possessed. In Part 2 I’ll elaborate on the lore for my specific warband which will cover how they see the Shadowlord and choose to interact with him.
As for the Mordheim video game, I don’t know if you find out who he is because the game is hard as hell and I haven’t beaten it yet 🤪
It'll be Gotrek and Felix I must be thinking of. I do like that it is entirely on brand for Belakor to be the shadow lord or equally to lie and just say he was.
@@warpjediAK Oh ya, if you want your warband to be under the influence of Be'lakor it is totally possible from a lore perspective. So if that is YOUR shadowlord, great! Depending that angle you take with your warband, there are some interesting themes that you can explore.
For my guys, I obviously went a different direction, but hopefully it illustrates just how creative you can get when building a Mordheim gang.
I'm fairly sure they revealed in a White Dwarf article that Belakor was the Shadow lord and the 'dark master' from the Albion campaign. It was when they brought the character into the setting. They went back to Albion and Mordheim and inserted him in a "he was in the shadows all the time" kind of way
@@positivegeekery I'll have to check out both of those sources you mentioned. From your description, Be'lakor does feel "tacked on" like he was kind of an after thought don't you think?
I was originally going to mention Be'lakor as the Shadow Lord when I was drafting the script for the video, but I ended up leaving it out because I'm somewhat skeptical about whether his inclusion in the setting was something the original game developers had intended -- from the original rulebook it seems like a point that was meant to be vague and ambiguous (likely to foster player creativity), so I ultimately decided to approach the setting and warband from that angle.
I'm still editing Part 2, maybe I'll give good ol' Be'Lakor a shout before signing off on the video.
Ah yes, good old Mordheim... The best example of why game systems can only get better once GW stops supporting them.
I myself don't get to play that much anymore, so the pc game will have to be enough for me.
100% sir. A similar reason I don’t want GW re-releasing or returning to Mordheim is that all the great work the Mordheim community put in to the game would be gone or replaced by “Nüheim” rules and warbands; which if current releases are indicative of quality would be a terrible state of affairs….I’m looking at you 40k 😂
I'm late to the party but I'm guessing the dislikes are from Sigmarxism or Age of Sigmar at large.
Learning the rules on the side since I discovered an autistically detailed table for the game in Table Top Simulator.
Welcome to the party! Ya I don’t care about the dislikes or their origin. This is a GrimDark Lore-driven channel run by an Inquisitor, not a place for the faint of heart 😉.
On a lighter note, it sounds like you have a great playground for learning the rules. I wish you nothing but good fortune on your journey into the darkly wonder world of Mordheim!
Your content is awesome, but the volume of your voiceover is much lower than all your effects and movie clips. Its very frustrating to watch
I thought I leveled everything decently before I put the video out, but if you’re saying that there are additional issues then I’ll be sure to do more quality control work for future releases. I appreciate the critique.
