  • The amount of custom projects that comes out of the scale segment in RC is astounding. Every day we see tons of creative builds being posted on-line and there doesn’t seem to be any end to the creativity. Some build just for fun and some build with the intention of being as scale as possible. One platform that is a great base for builds is the Axial SCX10. There are endless amounts of parts for it and it works great on the trail. But it is a link suspension style of truck and those who want to build a rig that is ultra scale may want to outfit the truck with a more scale leaf spring style of suspension. Many builders have fabricated leaf spring set-up, but thanks to RC4WD, you can now pick-up a bolt-on suspension kit for your Axial SCX10 II. This kit gives you everything you need to swap out the suspension and even chassis on your Existing SCX10 II Cherokee Build kit and if you have an RTR with the single piece axles, you can buy additional adapters to make this kit work on your truck too. Want to see what’s included in this kit? Want to see what it looks like installed and do you want to see it perform on the trails? Then you picked the right video to watch because it’s all here!

    This Leaf Spring Kit will be a great addition to some scale builds. The point of this video is to show how the stock leaf kit performs on a bone stock SCX10. It’s great seeing suggestions on how to improve performance for those interested. If you have ideas, please share them!

      Those Springs are way too stiff. Check out the leafpring setup that I built on my SCX10 back in 2011. made from the recoil spring out of a chainsaw pull-start. Shackles were made of bike chain.
      At 1:00 in the video you will see how much flex it had. At 1:08 you will see why> Folding ultra-droop shackles, and the leafs were very thin and high quality Spring steel. I eventually needed to add another leaf once the single main leafs got broken in.

    To give you some perspective on leaf suspension set up, my TF2 weighs 9 1/2 lbs and I run with the main spring with the smallest spring on TOP to prevent axle wrap which can bend the main spring. I'm getting scale looking articulation!

  • @carternevill
    @carternevill 4 года назад +14

    Definitely needs to be a lot softer, it's almost like it doesn't have suspension

    • @brysonkuhn3290
      @brysonkuhn3290 4 года назад +1

      It'll get softer as time goes by

      there is also a lot of mods to make it work better. like running the main leaf on the bottom and then the second longest on the top. also grinding the leaf eyes in a triangle pattern and squishing them to be oval and inserting fuel tubing into the leaf eye. you can also put the red axial rubber washers in between the leafs and the axle mount. plus they will break in over time.

    That’s really nice, there’s so many options and having one of each style of build setup gets so crazy expensive. I really enjoy it though and be able to have proper comparisons for testing. Thanks and your videos are always great....super informative in all the right areas.

    I think leaf springs work better on heavier trucks as it needs the weight to help the springs flex a little more. You also get less torque twist with leaf springs.

  • @michaelhoyle3266
    @michaelhoyle3266 4 года назад

    Love the scale look of leaf springs. More about challenging realism than performance. You can get softer springs and/or just run one to get more flex. Great just to have more options.

    They would have to be a lot softer for me to swap to leafs. Personally seeing articulation is a huge part of my enjoyment of this hobby.

    • @rcdriver
      @rcdriver  4 года назад +2

      There are things to do to make the suspension feel softer, but it will never articulate like a link set-up. But some want that realistic suspension action a leaf setup provides. It can be fun and challenging to drive.

    On the RTR SCX10II not a big fan of the the leaf springs. On the kit because of the better parts with a hard body would be a nice setup.

    If I was building a scale trail truck and wasn't doing much crawling I would just add weight until the leaf springs behavior is more scale. These look great. It would be really cool to ditch all the links just for the looks.

  • @gabbys408
    @gabbys408 4 года назад +1

    It doesnt look like the shackles have any movement the springs are definitely stiff but the shackles are supposed to move so the suspension has some droop when one wheel is on a lower ledge but it does look really cool but what a huge loss of performance but honestly a real k5 blazer on stock leaf springs is as stiff as a board also I think it needs fender wells to go with it just to make it look not hollow but I still think it looks awesome!!! Plus scale trucking always comes down to compromising performance for looks and it varies person to person

    I got a lot of inspiration from the video and I try to make it, but the RC4WD Leaf Spring Suspension Conversion Kit was discontinued. Since this is South Korea, it is difficult to obtain and it is too expensive such as eBay. Is there any way to get a cheap chassis?

    Is there any plans to do a leaf spring kit for the SCX10II UMG6x6? Or is there a way to maybe use 2 kits, with a bunch of imagineering and tinkering? I'm building a camper back for the back of mine, and I'm okay with the stiffness, it'll work out. I'm just curious if maybe you'd heard anythingor maybe you've heard of somebody doing it?

    It looks like a 3 leaf spring to me. If you want to soften the spring more then take out the MIDDLE leaf (maybe)??? Makes sense to me but, don't know if it will help.

    • @rcgarageph7228

      Henry it will never work to mount the leaf to the middle and it will never flex becouse it doesn't have a pivot balls

    Leaf springs are great for heavy scale R/C crawler like the hard body D110 defender. In the other words, you have to match the weight of your R/C crawler. Leaf springs are not ideal for light weight rig like the SCX10.

    Why do these manufactures CONTINUE to make the front springs hangers backwards!? The shackle goes towards the BACK not in front of the axle SMH

    • @ryurc3033
      @ryurc3033 2 года назад

      Not on everything. Look at stock leaf spring jeeps from the 70s, and the Chevys too. The hanger only goes in the rear if someone is modifying it for high speed situations. At least in real life.
