Great news!!! For those temporary benches, I think Ben is on the right track. I've used Krenov style sawhorses for temporary benches. The top rail is 'pinched' with a through bolt rather than screwed in. I just screw 3/4" MDF to a piece of material that bolts into the sawhorse. I clamp 1x6 material to both sawhorses and it makes them very stiff. The tops I put right back in my plywood rack and I use the sawhorses for other things when I don't need the additional benches for a class.
