There are many bass players I have seen doing that technique like Karel Honasan, Davie504, Fernando Molinari, Mark Peric and Naoki Kobayashi.

Nope, Bill Dickens does this in a 9 string bass. I use to think that spacing mattered but all that is an excuse we come up with.. If you don't know bill Dickens, look him up. He does all that stuff on a 7-9 string bass.
