- It was during one lazy Sunday afternoon when I finally decided to strip the coating of KA-BAR BK-18 The Harpoon.
What a pleasant surprise to see the dual tone finish hidden under the coating like it had been sand-blasted or stone-washed.
I'm going to keep the blade as it is and let the natural patina to set in.
Love The Harpoon!
I would have just took the handles off, then stripped it. That's just me.
Yes agreed but I just couldn't find the screw driver to remove the scales. Thank you for watching.
I like the idea of the coating still being on under the scales. Easy enough to oil the exposed blade and Handel...
@@UnkerBuzz You had your multitool right there; you used it to remove the can seal. You didn't need a wrench for the nut (right) side; the nuts were countersunk and we're captive. Why didn't you use one of the three screwdrivers on the multitool?
@@UnkerBuzz OH, never mind, I see. You needed an Allen (hex) wrench, not a screwdriver. But, from your original response, I guess you didn't know that either.
Yes you are right
Merci pour le partage.
Thank you for watching
I’m going to look for that 1919 paint thinner
Outstanding
Wish that patina under that skin would of stayed on mine but I just polished it up a bit ...Not too much just enough to protect from rust.
I left my handle portion alone that way ot don't rust underneath.
The micarta scales are WAY BETTER.
The knife feels amazing once I switched them out amd it just looks killer.
That thinner you used works amazing mine didn't do that ...I think the black version has a diffent coating mixture.
Where did you get the scales for BK18?

Thank you
why didnt you take the scales off and do the whole knife at once
It was a last minute decision to keep the paint on the handle and further hampered by the fact that I've misplaced my hex key screw driver. Thank you for watching.
Awesome dude
Thank you for watching
I have bought 3 different kinds of paint stripper and nothing has touched that coating!
My local paint stripper seems too strong here in Singapore ..
But sorry you could not remove the handle ?
I should but I just didn't bother. Thank you for watching.
Dear Unker Buzz, what brand of paint remover is that you're using? My bk18 is gonna arrive soon & I want to take the coating off with that product. Haven't been able to find it in MI. Thanks for the vid!
It's a local product found in Singapore. I think any other paint remover works just as well. And thanks for watching.
Why not take the scales off beforehand?
I should have actually but for whatever reason I just couldn't find the right size tool bit during the making of the video. So, I just went ahead without removing the scales. Thank you for watching.
Nice!!!👍🏼
Thank you for watching
VERY Cool Idea! A Thought...........Why not just remove the Handles? and wipe down the whole blade?
Well I thought I wanted to leave the coating behind the scales and at the same time I couldn't find my driver
Hey, I'm thinking about buying the Harpoon, and doing this is very tempting (not so much for looks, but let's say I don't love traction coating). I worry about rusting tho. How do you avoid that? Did you give it a patina, and how?
When in storage, I will apply a thin layer of Singer oil (yes, sewing machine oil). And before taking it outdoor I will wash the oil off clean and use the cooking oil I bring for cooking meals. I got a natural patina from cutting food and fruits and rusts when I'm too tired to care for the blade but it does leave natural rust spots that add to the overall patina look.
The best thing to do to get what you want is to remove the handle scales, strip the coating, clean the entire knife with acetone while wearing nitrile gloves, and then completely submerge the knife in vinegar. If you want a lighter patina use distilled white vinegar and if you want a darker patina use apple cider vinegar. Gideons Tactical has a great video showing how its done using a BK16 but the process is the same for both.
How long u left the remover on?
Not that long surprisingly. Within 15mins the coating starts to peel off. I applied few layers of the paint remover and stopped when the paint coating started to coagulate..
Well done! Did you protect the knife after you removed the coating to prevent rusting? It’s a great looking finished product!
Yes with food safe oil always. Thank you for watching
What did u use to protect it for long time keeping in the box?
I will apply some food grade oil and clean it out every month
I'll just leave mine like it is
Looks great too .. thank you for watching
Is there any way to dye the sheath? I've just bought one of these and the first thing I'll be doing in stripping the Paint off the blade, looks amazing. Great video.
Same thought. I haven't got into dyeing the sheath yet. I'm still rocking the Celcon handle. And thank you for watching.
@@UnkerBuzz thanks for the fast reply 👌🏻 if I find out a way to dye it I'll let you know. I wanted a black one but wasn't able to get one in Australia.
Me too but the black one is Blade HQ exclusive and not deliverable to Singapore.
Steam tak?
The paint remover splatter gives a hot and tingling feeling ..
Legal
Yes
I am officially a weird knife person now why did I find this video extremely relaxing to watch 😂 😊 made be it was the music or the knife ???
Watching paint coating peeling off with a smooth background music creates ASMR satisfying effects 😄 .. thank you for watching
Handle scales dapat bukak lagi bagus.
What's funny is I couldn't find my Alan keys that fit during the recording so I just went ahead with the stripping without removing the scales
Love the shape of the knife, hate FDE on literally anything. It's a gross color.
Me too .. love the harpoon profile and the two-tone blade surface .. it's smooth to cut now
@@UnkerBuzz I may have to follow your lead.
Thank you for watching
if you didn't like the appearance of the knife, just wondering why you bought it? Why even go through the hassle, time and money to do this when you could have purchased a different knife to begin with.?
I love the Harpoon. And thank you for watching.
Nothing wrong with customizing your blades, dude can do whatever he wants with his time and money.
Thank you for watching
I don't think it cost him much to do this. 2 wooden tooth picks? 🙄
Because the brown is kinda ugly. But the blade shape is pretty exclusive, and useful. As the video also shows, beautiful once the brown coating is removed
I bet it rusted out bad
Blade has a formed a nice natural patina
Take the handles OFF THINK DUDE
Yes! I just couldn't find the screw driver for the handles. Thanks for the advice and thank you for watching.
Thank you for watching
