Video: 'Powwaqatsi: Life in Transformation' (1988) by Godfrey Reggio. Whole documentary at 16X speed. Audio: 'CAUGHT!' from the album 'Powaqqatsi' by Philip Glass.
On the one hand it's wonderful that more of the people shown here live with modern medicine and conveniences today. Most of us in the West can't build our own tech, we're really not so different. But there's also something saddening about seeing these images. For all the talk of diversity, the world has become so much more of a monoculture in the last 30 years. We believe in "whig history", but not all is good.
Hehehehe! Running the music over the credits was a brilliant choice, it reified Powaqattsi and made it a part of its own subject matter in a cynical fashion.
I recommend the 'LoFi House Mix 1992' (and 1988) version of this by Katarakt. As great as Philipp Glass is, the house soundtrack neutralises the ham-fisted message, making the film more freely interpretable. Also, the reversed footage is much prettier.
i like ham-fisted better. ham-fisted is how you are when you've got something to say. being "open for interpretation" is what you do when you have nothing to say and are skating by on making your audience think they're smart, sophisticated people, not like all the mediocre hogs.
What a great service. Thank you!

Great, thanks a lot
love to see Naqoyqatsi in 5 mins...
It exists, but it was apparently copyright-blocked
Just found this. Phenomenal. Surprisingly impactful.
Too long. I don't have time to watch all of this... I need to get back to my business meeting. Can you make a 60 second version?
