folks, never settle for energy any less than chris making a genuine effort to be as interested in fossils as sharla is.
He tried his best😂😂
"I feel like I'm in prison" 🤣
Now I kinda get what they think when they watch me play 2k.
I mean, he hot her into it. lol
I felt like I was waiting a PBS show. It was very cool, and now I want a fossil necklace with matching earrings. Chris is a good boyfriend A+
As a geologist, I was so giddy to see this video and watch you both collect fossils. You found some really great ammonite specimen! Fun fact, belemnites are often used by stratigraphers to date the surrounding rocks because they existed for such a short time (geologically speaking). It might be also why you had a harder time finding them. I am glad that you and Chris had a good time fossil hunting!
Also, it may seem silly, but I really appreciated the safety minute with warning people about the cliffs. People often don't think about it and end up getting hurt trying to explore.
So what are those iron clams in the cliffs? Who made them? I'm so confused.
@@mary-janereallynotsarah684 Do you mean the pyritized ammonites (the swirl shell things)?
@@Alexx-up1hh yeah the ones Chris will buy beer with.
@@mary-janereallynotsarah684 Totally understandable to be confused. Those shells look very wild. No one put them there. They are shells that had their material replaced with pyrite when they were fossilized. So like dinosaur bones are fossilized into rock, these were fossilized with pyrite. It happens when water rich with minerals that make pyrite filled in the spaces of organisms (even the size of cells) and over time the pyrite is able to form. I hope that explains it a bit, but I’m happy to clarify in any way.
@@Alexx-up1hh thanks! I kind... of understood it. 😋
Please travel the world with Chris and vlog it all 😂
So down for this series/show :D
If this is a sneak peek to life after Japan, I’m all for it!
I agree! I'd love that.
Yes! Would watch the heck out of that!
Abroad in Japan is now... Abroad in THE WORLD
You can really feel Chris's enthusiasm for fossil hunting emanating through this video.
😅😂
Along with his love of the wind and rain.
@@robhills2613 Chris is Hammer Man! Wet, cold, windswept ... Hammer Man!
@@sharlainjapan Defo Shawshank Redemption vibe lol
Most enthusiastic British man on a rainy day.
Genuine applause for Sharla's resilience against the bitter English rain, particularly in winter. Cold isn't usually fun but wet cold is always miserable.
Haha I had a great time!! 😂👌🏻👌🏻
I haven’t seen you this excited and happy since you were collecting Pokémon manhole covers! 😂 totally in your element!!
Just FYI, the "UFO" shaped rock Chris beat the life out of was actually a fossilized Crab. It's very meticulous work to get them out of the rock, and they're pretty common. But still very cool once you've chipped them out.
Oh really! Cool!
Lollll I had no idea
I absolutely love how Chris was trying to be all funny and gruff like “How much money are we making?” but then ends up getting genuinely excited over a really nice fossil 😂
My two favourite Animal Crossing villagers on a hunt! Sharla as Shino and Chris as Raymond 😂
chris as raymond hahahaha
Omg yes! fossil hunting in the rain, MASSIVE animal crossing vibes!!!
Well done with your humorous fossil hunting video and all your little fossil finds. You especially found some great little ammonites preserved in iron pyrite. You really went out there and did your best in all that rain ☔️ - at low tide. You certainly pointed out all the safety aspects well, about keeping away from the cliffs. You also pointed out the correct safety equipment to wear and the scraper worked in all that sharp metal. It’s extra fun to find one of the right little rocks at low tide and split it open to find a fossil inside along the Jurassic Coast. There is a fossil collecting code of conduct in operation along the Jurassic Coast, see West Dorset fossil collecting code of conduct online. There is one stipulation you must not dig in the cliffs " in situ."You certainly must not hammer the cliffs which could be fatal. The cliffs are dangerous and liable to fall suddenly and without warning! . You can save the little fossils like this from the destruction of the sea at low tide, on a rapidly eroding coastline. If you find anything particularly important you must register that at the Charmouth Heritage Centre. I have found many fossils that have ended up in museums across the world. Some important finds I have made by tapping the right little rocks carefully with a hammer, that had scientifically important fossils within. (45 years experience in the field helps.) If you get back this way in the future I can always take you folkes Fossil Collecting and show you the small nodules that split like slate. Cheers from Lyme Regis Fossils Channel - RUclips - thanks 😊 for the mention.
Thank you so much for sharing your expertise - would absolutely love to go fossil hunting together! :)
Thank You
As a local who has seen a lot of fossil hunters, your tips are top tier. Also I'm surprised that people said that they're hard to find, there's literally an insane amount around.
Next time you visit Dorset, do visit Kimmeridge beach, it's the next level fossil hunting for you. Not only does have a lot of fossils, the rock formation is stunning and great visual display of the why there is so many fossils on the Dorset coast.
Ooo thank you I’ll add it to the list for our next trip here! ❤️
@Sharmeleon Kimmeridge Bay is also great for rock pooling. Catch some crabs, fish, and sea anemones before releasing them back into the sea
Do they still have the beach hut with TVs showing live footage of the sea bed at Kimmeridge? It was so cool
Out of curiosity, do ya'll find sharks teeth there? Very cool to see these things being found on a beach. I live across the pond in Florida, about 10 min from the beach my whole life and I spend the time there either swimming or hunting for sharks teeth. I can find about 20 in an hour. It should be noted I'm on the west coast so it's the Gulf of Mexico and not the Atlantic, but just curious if sharks teeth are as prevalent. I'm guessing probably not. It's kind of ridiculous how many are here, super exciting to find "newer" ones and every now and then the very rare Megaladon ones (I've found 2 in 40 years...one at the beach and one on a construction site about 20 miles from the beach lol). Anyways, just wondering, best of luck in your searches! (not sure I'd go to the beach as often, or ever, if I lived there, I'll keep my 95 degree constant sunshine and 85 degree water thanks...probably why the sharks stayed around here too).
Sharla, it's safe to say as long as your producing content, it doesn't matter where in the world you are, or what you're doing. I'll watch every video regardless, you always manage to make everything so interesting! Now I wanna go fossil hunting🔎
I appreciate that😭 Thanks Matthew!!
Sharla picking up a slight British accent is everything. ❤️
That was actually my first clue to them being together before they officially announced it! It’s so cute haha
@@spyscy You hear Chris say "hoos" for house and that'll do it!
@@catheriam1945 We don't say 'hoos' in Canada. We also don't say 'aboot' for about or any of that other stuff. And I say that as a Canadian who has lived in nearly every city from one of the country to the other, and dozens and dozens of outlying towns.
@@SuperSPatrick You won't hear it to be fair.
@@jamesc3953 I live here. I can hear it just fine.
As a geologist I appreciate that you stuck at it even when the rain came in - good effort!
I really enjoyed this Sharla. My late father was an avid fossil hunter and this brought back many Sunday afternoons in the 1960s and 1970s when we were out having a family day, mostly watching Dad do what he loved and what to me at the time seemed a pointless waste of time away from a warm house and tv. Your enthusiasm was infectious.. and Chris reminded me of me. Palaeontology/Geology is complex and interesting and kept my dad gripped for the rest of his life -and he rose to be an associate curator at Oxford University museum and left his collection to the museum in his will. Thanks for this trip down memory lane :)
That shot of you hunting whilst the sideways rain was pouring is such a British vibe 😅 so impressed with the finds! We have only ever done Lyme in the Summer but think we might have to head over in the next couple of weekends as you have found loads! 🦕
Watching you two over the years both apart and more recently together has been a great pleasure but this is your best yet in my opinion, not for technical presentation nor for subject matter excellent though it was; no, I mean for simple human warmth, nicely emphasised by the cold grey wet day. There is a comment below with many likes that says you should travel the world and vlog it. Worth thinking about, no?
This looks really fun! Something else you might want to try in the future is mudlarking in the Thames in London. If you do a guided tour they will help you find interesting things and tell you the history of what you locate. Pottery shards, clay arrows, clay pipes, coins etc
Oooo fun 👀
@@sharlainjapan I think you need a special license to "mudlark" on the Thames. One of my favorite channels is
youtube.com/@nicolawhitemudlark she finds such amazing things!
That sounds so cool!
my friends mum does this and makes art with what she finds it’s so cool
”Mudlarking”, new favorite word right there.
Sharla is full of surprises, no end to her hidden talents and endless knowledge, Classy Lassie and such a cute couple, Chris narrating - he's the Attenborough of our generation, love it
He is so head over heels for Sharla ♥️
I love your England vlogs! I've lived here for 10+ years and I love to learn what people think. Also going to find fossils and selling them is the most Animal Crossing thing I've seen in a long time.
Me thoroughly enjoying reading this right after playing animal crossing 😂
Lol! I hadn't even thought of that! Totally Animal Crossing.
It's oddly fascinating and oddly horrifying to think there were that many of those things to be fossilized like that together in groups.
Yeah, it's like for hundreds of thousands of years, that spot was where ammonites went to die or something. Like just a mass euthanasia cove or something, in order for there to be all those countless fossils in such a small area. Somewhat morbid to think of >.>
@@SurgStriker could've just been their home or breeding ground or something. idk too much about them
to be fossilized, and to be found in one spot, it was most likely a massive flood event that buried them in sediment. (this is speculation not a fact)
@@fredd3.14 this is old sea bed that is now part of the landmass. So all these animals died at sea and sank to the bottom where they got covered in mud, sand etc and then more and more layers which get compressed and fossilized over millions of years. You can see in some of the clips all the different layers in the cliffs which literally represent millions of years of this process. Each layer will have different composition and different type of fossils.
Just a heads up to correct a common misconception: geologists and paleontologists are ones who look at and deal with fossils. Archaeologists deal with human history and remains - not fossils. You all actually got most of your information spot on, very well done! Btw, the ones that are more rusty are likely ones that have been exposed longer. Like anything containing iron, iron rusts once it's exposed to oxygen.
@@urundulblue Yes, that's true. But it's all still human focused and not the kind of fossils that most folks would typically think of when they think of fossil (general understanding is typically "oh fossils are dinosaur bones." (Don't get me started on the fossil definitions freshmen undergrads try to give you; the level of understanding is extremely basic at best and usually incorrect.) And yes of course most sciences and academic fields in general these days are multidisciplinary and there is overlap, as there should be. But in the case of trying to correct a misconception to a nonsciencey audience, I chose to simply it to make it shorter and easier for people to understand. To talk about all the differences and explain each field would be paragraphs long, and way beyond necessary here.
Seriously, when Chris made the Indiana Jones joke, my only response was "but he's an archeologist, fossils are paleontology" and bam, his joke is ruined.
@@lainiwakura1776 And Indiana Jones wasn't a good archaeologist at that!
@@urundulblue I think that's worse than some of the worst answers I've gotten lol. You win. I wouldn't even be able to keep a straight face if someone asked me that.
@@lainiwakura1776 If anything a good reference would've been jurassic park
To think he almost proposed here, fills me with so much love for you two. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Thanks for taking us along! I'm so glad you took time off camera to explore too!
I love how much of a fossil nerd you are, Sharla! Chris tried his best, bless his heart 😂
You two better make this work. You're brilliant together! Both of your senses of humor compliment each other, making watching you guys hysterical! More Chris filled content!!!
I love that you guys both enjoy digging for things from the past together. Looks like such a cool activity to do together.
As a Brit it’s really nice to see tourists enjoying the coast! It’s so easy to look at the weather and say “nah,” I think I’ll go wander the beach today ☺️
You have unlocked a deep deeeep childhood memory and now renewed desired to go and get fossils. Thanks for this, really brought back some fun dreams I had as a child in this video
Me too... And I'm pretty sure it was at the same place or at least somewhere in England lol...
“The weather is abysmal”. That’s typical UK winter weather unfortunately 😂
Fantastic! I live in Wyoming USA, over 1,000 miles from the nearest ocean, and hunt ammonite, baculite, belemnite etc. on the plains and in the Black Hills. We're at 4 to 5,000' elevation but this area was once a great inland sea. Love seeing the perfect little pyrite ammys ... pyrite replacement here is very rare and ammonite is very uncommon compared to the common baculite and belemnite. Thanks so much for sharing this, I can't go hounding until the snow thaws so it was a nice vicarious treat for this rockhound
Despite the wind, rain and Chris (joking) When Sharla is talking about fossils and hunting for them, there seems to be an elevated sense of happiness which is characterized by that trademark "Sharla smile" being even bigger than usual and her eyes being extra sparkly, thank you for taking us on this adventure in the homeland of "Mr Affable." it was wonderful to watch.
this is so wholesome; even in the pouring rain, you were happily searching for fossils 🥰 I'm so glad you guys are able to travel again! thanks for sharing bits of your adventures, Sharla 😊

Not quite related to this video but I've been using the last skincare box you released (with the green tea cleanser) and my skin has cleared up so well! I used to have such bad cystic acne and now I get *NONE* I barely even have pimples and if I do they're almost unnoticeable. Thank you so much!!
Ahh that makes me so happy🥹❤️ It did the same for me and I know how much of a relief it is to have clear skin😭 So happy for you!!!
@@sharlainjapan Honestly I was SO surprised it worked. I'd tried a couple cleansers & moisturizers in the past and they only made it worse. Can't believe how lucky I got with the box!

I loved how genuinely happy you looked every time you found one. You’re just so adorable Sharla ☺️
Look at how Chris looks at Sharla omg he loves her so much!!
I love how much information Sharla gave in this. She is a good student.
Chris is having so much fun but trying so hard to sound like he isn't, like the brit he is...its ok Chris, you are surrounded by rain and dreary weather, you are at home buddy, you can let yourself feel happy LOL
Sharla found so many ammonites! They are so small but such important parts of natural history. Never touched one in my life, but I sure liked seeing you finding so many! Hope you got to take them back...might even wrap some wire around and make a pendant to annoy Chris :P
Congrats on hitting 750k! Didn't even notice last video. Over the hump on the way to Sharizard! :P Great video Sharla, love this one, super cozy even though it looked like a miserable day. Those fossils are so cool!
Thanks so much!! 💕
That was really fun to watch! Would love to see more simular natural science stuff on your channel honestly, Japan must have fossil sites?
This is such wholesome content for some reason. Something about being able to do something so chill together yet literally looking at stuff that is millions of years old!! I love you and Chris together!
You sounded so knowledgeable Sharla, you really did your homework! This was so fun to watch 😍
I can’t help but think of Junji Ito’s “Uzumaki” with all the spirals in this video. 😅 This was really peaceful & wholesome!
Aww this is so exciting to see! I went on the same guided walk last year and fossil hunted on the same beach 🥰.
I can't believe how many you found!
Did you feel like you were living Animal Crossing finding all the fossils?
I am stupidly excited watching this video, I loved fossil hunting so much last year. Thank you so much for making a video on it! I need to go back again 🥰
Sorry a bit too much fangirling over fossils there 😅
Videos like this make me miss home. Havent been back for 9 years.

I'm a micropaleontologist and am thrilled to see how much you enjoyed your fossil hunting experience!
I loved this video. Beach combing vids are some of my faves, so watching you and Chris do this made it 10x better. How exciting you found so many! Thanks for filming it while you hunted in the rain! 😊
Time index 6:34 Chris`s blunder, you are in DORSET, not Devon. Good collection of ammonites Sharla. An engraving tool might help you to clean them up.
your enthusiasm for the fossil hunting was so infectious! my friends mum goes mudlarking along the thames etc and it’s soo cool to see what she finds
Now I can only imagine Chris hiding the ring and pretending to find an awesome fossil, calling Sharla and baboom, there's the ring :'D
You guys are adorable together ❤️ What a fun, different activity to do. Hope you guys had fun! 🙂
This was my childhood! Not in the UK by the sea but in an abandoned quarry close to my house in Slovakia. It was blowing my mind, that I could find shells when my country doesn't even have the sea, nor it's anywhere close. I was obsessed. And now you have reminded me, just how fun it is. Need to go again when I have the chance.
Btw. have you seen the movie Ammonite with Kate Winslet as Mary Anning? Probably not super historically correct but I really like it.
I love you two together! I just found out last week y’all are engaged 🎉!
I wish you both the most very best!

Oooh yay I've been waiting for this thank you for filming this i love anything paleontology :D
Hi Sharla, this video was the best! I love fossils since I was a kid and I have my own collection. ❤
Ahhhh I'm so happy you did it!!! I really hope you had a fantastic time! 💖
You don't often seem to get the beautiful solid iron pyrite ones up on the Yorkshire coast - they're usually shale-y and break up super easily 😭 Also - I've never had any luck cracking the nodules open either so dw😂I think the best way is to wedge it in between two rocks and work slowly down the sharp edge until it cracks smoothly!
Thanks for sharing with us 🥰
I love Chris is filming nice shots with you happily hunting in the background 💛
Been waiting for this!!! yeyyyy
Wow! Fossil hunting, it does have a Jurassic Park/World vibe here.
And even though I thought it would be a dinosaur fossil, digging a small one is also an accomplishment.
I haven't finished the video yet but it's so fun watching your fossil hunting! I agree with the others about vlogging bits of travel from around the world. It's nice seeing you both in different places😊 but no pressure of course! Whatever you feel like doing is best! I just mean you don't need to worry about whether we are interested or not just because it's not necessarily related to Japan. 👍 Hope the rest of your trip goes well!!!
This was a very fun & informative video~ Glad you found so many!
This was such an interesting vlog. Me and my kids have collected so many rocks and fossils over the years. I actually prefer the ones that aren't whole in their natural state I think it makes them look more interesting.

This looks like such a chill day out!
Added to the trip list with my friends... and winter trips are always the best!
Honestly loved seeing how excited Sharla was ❤ so prepped with information as well.
I would recommend not chiseling the multi ammonite slab and separating them! They are really beautiful in slabs when cleaned up and displayed
Any idea what kind of tool would be best for cleaning it up? :)
Take them to Blathers immediately!!!
Oh wow, those fussels are great, good work especially in the rain.
I wish it had been a clear blue sky for you guys, it really has beautiful views when the suns out at Lyme - still great to get that fresh sea air.
Was going to make a Ryotaro joke, but I saw Chris got a good one in during the video. Well done, Chris. 😂
Wow, now this is something different. Makes me want to visit the site one day. It looks so fun being like a kid again doing amateur paleontology. I also appreciate some science education you sprinkled in.
Chris breaking the ice by acting like some prospector during the Victorian era made it even more fun.
