I worked a Dollar General a few years and the real manager locked themselves in that small back room the whole time. I legit put "manager" on my duties for only this job on my resume after I left.

I be doing the register, filling the products and redirecting costumers to what they search for all at once. I literally run to the register cuz I was called in for back up and at least 10 people see me and have to ask me right now where this specific item nobody has ever heard of is. The worst part is the fact that it stresses you out so much that you don’t have the energy to look for a better job

The fact that the iconic cart with the empty pallets or half-stocked inventory is so commonplace all across the country isn't an epidemic of lazy workers only for these dollar stores, it's upper management intentionally not hiring enough people and keeping the current staff stretched impossibly thin. These stores are oftentimes the only option available in poor and rural areas, so the company will make bank regardless on if the customer has a terrible experience.

I was having trouble with the register (because I was new) and he yelled at me to get off. Meanwhile a line was building up with literally no one taking orders. So I got on, he saw me and he was like, "Andrew, I told you to get off of register!" "Then you get on, because I'm not going to let these people just stand and wait" That might have been the only time he listened to me
They had me working the register and stocking the shelves in the back and had the nerve to get mad at me for not being at the register when my coworker was working the one next to me and barely anyone was there. I was the only black one and they would schedule one day a week 😑 and constantly berate me in front of customers.
My other job, they told me "you always have to be prepared for customers at the register" and when I stood there too long when we had customers in my area, they said "you don't need to be here, go start stocking
