- A very strange design developed and patented by Nottingham City Transport this bus was represented at bus shows for innovation and used a lot for private excursions. However not all Managers and Councillors liked the design which was re-bodied by Northern Counties.
Andrew Pickering, whose name is seen on the front of ARC666T, was a local boy who suffered from a fatal condition. He was interested in buses and in particular this one. Andrew died at the age of eight in 1994 and NCT arranged for ARC666T to take part in his funeral procession. When the bus was refurbished the following year, it was named in Andrew's memory.
ARC666T was never rebodied, that is still it's original Northern Counties body with some modifications from when it was new.
Oh those wipers.......what a classic!
Remember this bus as a kid used to regularly run the 28 bilborough service. I'll be honest I preferred it in the original green livery it had throughout its service life.
I worked at Northern Counties when this vehicle was built, for some reason Nottingham Transport always had the big rubber Bumper at the front
The BMW 5 GT of the bus world... those wipers would drive me mad with that racket
Just watched this video again......love the wipers and the unique styling....but there's something more significant for me...and that's the little whistle from the transmission air valves on gear changes. It was more common on Leyland Leopards with the Pneumocyclic gearbox, but some Atlanteans did it too. Eastbourne Buses had 3 ex- East Kent ECW bodied examples in the early 90s, which all "whistled" 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd......in varying volume between the 3 vehicles. Absolute classic, lovely to see and hear a "whistler" in preservation. Great video by the way, thank you.
I know the whistle you mean! Yes! I had a Leopard sometimes on my school bus a few years ago.
Although I am much younger than when these buses were used by Nottingham City Transport, I remember them well as the company that my primary school used for bus trips had some of these, which I suspect were bought from Nottingham City Transport.
Unusual looks and novel wiper arrangement, that will appeal I'm sure to @HubNut.
Iconic if you ask me...
i remember seeing this one in Nottm when I lived there in the 80s. I assumed it was a standard bus that had been in a head on smash so they put a new front on it.
great to see thank you ..I restore the pneumatic gear shifters off these, very hard to find parts so I'm making my own. how do you go for parts, eg the rubber boots they had to stop the coins jamming the shifter and gaskets???
Wow...used to travel on this bus many times to Rushcliffe School on route 201 'School Service' in the mid 80s. Sounded slightly more whiney compared to the other Atlanteans. Great times.
Very unique styling. I remember the Fleetlines and Atlanteans ran by Bournemouth Transport could open the doors using the gearstick. Did this have the same option? Were there other Fleetlines and Atlanteans that had this?
Oh wow! I don't know how it worked on these.
@@video47 the gear selector looked like it should be a 5 speed gearbox so middle 2 were 1 & 2, right 2 were 3 & 4. Reverse was bottom left. When the bus was stopped and the driver selected top left, the doors opened, soon as the driver took the gear selector out of this position, the doors closed. Yellow buses formerly Bournemouth transport, got a selection of fleetlines in the 60s using gardener engines, then Atlanteans until the early 70s. Then they got more Fleetlines with Alexander AL bodywork most with Leyland engines and the final batch early 80s, with gardener 6Lx engines. They all had this feature.
WOW! Nice bus for long life it is... What a big! ^_^
looks "modern" for its age
dennis trident william It was re-bodied so it was innovative and ahead of it's time.
That has to be the longest dashboard with nothing on it I've ever seen
Is still sporting its "690" plant?
Yes.

Air Operated wipers
@@joeritchie7286 🤣🤣🤣
It is one of the ugliest bus I have seen also the strangest door and seating arrangements ever. There was 2 off these lying in Blythewood motors in Renfrew for sale about 5 years ago they lay there for about 2 years I think they eventually went for scrap
Looks like an Atlantean was sent to a European country for many years and came back like this.
Sounds more like an Olympian than an Atlantean
