- Watch this if you want the feeling of travelling back in time on a steam-powered locomotive through breathtaking landscapes and historic towns on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad.
We filmed our late September 2024 mesmerizing train ride from the high plains of Antonito, CO through golden aspen groves, rugged mountain peaks, and deep rocky canyons, ending in the charming, historic town of Chama, NM. This incredible 64-mile adventure travels in and out of the two states 11 times and aboard one of the last steam powered narrow-gauge railroads, offering a front-row seat from directly behind the locomotive.
We began our journey at an elevation of 7,888 feet meandering through open plains before climbing into the San Juan Mountains. We cross several trestles, traverse two tunnels, see many historical structures, and reach our highest point of 10,015 feet at the Cumbres Pass before descending a steep four percent grade down to Chama, NM.
We hope you enjoy the video as much as we enjoyed our unforgettable trip!
