I love Jenny Agutter 😁
I see you are hung up on the 1,056 unaccounted for Runners and wanted to see them in Sanctuary.
However, no-one made it past Box. He froze them to fulfill his function. The food from the sea stopped coming and the robot froze the Runners when they got to him.
The cub in question was 14 or 15, not 40 or 50.
It was a managed colony if survivors after global atomic war. It was managed by the computer. The people could lead a happy, hedonistic lifestyle for 30 years. Then they were convinced they would be reincarnated if they did carousel. That is how the computer maintained control and kept them docile.
It was a static, go nowhere, dead end society. But it did outlive the global war.
My only plot hole is that no one remembers their past life. They take it for granted they are reborn.
They never saw anyone who was old and who had hair on their face. Did you happen to notice there are no fat people, no one with diseases, no crippled people. They were all young and beautiful.
Fun gimmick: Logan’s colorful head saying “noooo sanctuaaaaaarrry” was an actual hologram. They had them at science museums in the 70s. They were 3D and created using lasers and they would turn in order for them to “move.”
Sure we remember them, and thinking, "This is the future? Looks like crap and it's creepy on top of it.".

The big interior set was the Ft Worth Galleria, and the Sandman HQ exterior was the backside of the old Mobile Oil building in Dallas.
Did you know That there was a Logan's Run tv series That Ran for 14 Episodes iDuring the 1977-78 tv season? The First episode was just a retelling of the movie,

I think it used The Fugitive as a template, just as the Planet of the Apes TV series did. Generally on the move, keeping ahead of someone who is hunting.

A point that lingered with me, the first time I watched this, was that all the runners who made it before Logan ran into Box. And were promptly frozen. Some "sanctuary."
All the runners before did not have a sandman blaster, so Box was able to overpower them.
Some of the previous runners could have made it past Box, the computer said there were over a thousand runners, clearly some were frozen but there's nothing to suggest that all were caught. And once out of the city if they went in a different direction to Logan and Jessica, there could actually be a Sanctuary somewhere
The computer thought Logan was lying about there being no sanctuary. And could not accept that there is NOOOOO SAANNCCTTUUAARRRYY! As a result, it fried its computer brain.
In the novel, Lastday was when you turned 21 and the year is 2116. Let's just say the novel has a more interesting set of twists than the movie ever could portray.
This is actually a remake I would want done, being more true to the book.
great reaction Ray! I saw this in the theater in 76. We were blown away by the set and the special effects ,It won 3 Oscars including cinematography , and set decoration. Then the next year this little syfy film called Star Wars came out and totally blew us away..lol. Kind of overshadowing all the great 70s syfy flicks Looking forward to your Soylent Green reaction!!

Logan's Run finished a run of dystopian futures where an individual seeks to overpower the established status quo, or at least discover what is going on: THX 1138, Soylent Green, Rolleball. After 1976, there was 1977 and for a while, people wanted escapism and good vs. evil done simple.
I remember seeing this when it came out in the 70s , great movie ,
I was such a huge fan of both Michael York and Farrah Fawcett back in the day that I just had to see this movie. I was also a fan of the television series based on this movie and characters. Honestly the effects are vintage dated, but I thought the effect of the "gunfire" was pretty cool.
Now I re-watch for nostalgia but have to admit that other Sci-Fi movies of the era held up better over time.
In the book there was no carousel. They just put people to "sleep". That's why the guys who put you to sleep are called "sand men".
Also in the book you only lived to 21 in the city. They had to change this because many of the actors couldn't pass for 20 years old.
Considering that most of them were at least 30, that makes sense.
in the book they are not stuck in a domed city its a world wide culture. another reason for upping the age of the actors was all that teenage sex mentioned in the book

Another one of my personal favorites that I am so glad to see you react to...but the list of things for you to show to the rest of the gang grows loooooong. LOL Every time I see this one, I am reminded of how much of a treasure Perter Ustinov was. You should check out the Disney animated Robin Hoof with him voicing Prince John...and for a wonderful Christmas movie you have never heard of, check out We're No Angels with Humphrey Bogart, Aldo Ray and Peter Ustinov. 💯

By the way, in the same decade, there was another movie with "Logan" in the title, that confused some people. I recall commercials having fun with the confusion! 😂
I think it has actress Jacqueline Smith trying to outrun a corrupt sheriff in a place called "Logan County" and the movie title might be "Escape from Logan County"? 🤔

Do not forget Fahrenheit 451 (1966)... Based on the 1953 novel of the same name by Ray Bradbury, the film takes place in a controlled society in an oppressive future, in which the government sends out firemen to destroy all literature to prevent revolution and thinking. (Fahrenheit 451 being the temp that book papers combusts)....

Enjoyed the reaction. I understand where you are coming from on the questions, but in this film we definitely get to fill in the back stories for ourselves. I think the AI blew up because it was operating all along with a fixation on sanctuary, and it's non-existence was too contrary to the computer's world view for it to continue. Shutting down AIs with paradoxes and the like was a common trope in sci-fi at the time. Imagine the aftermath though, when all these pampered young people with no real experience in independent thinking or survival skills are thrown into the harsh surface world. Can they get power in the city back? At least they are young enough that they can get something going, but I'll bet many will be pissed about being kicked out of paradise. And, of course, generations later they will have probably built a religion around it.

Peter Ustinov was 50 yo when this movie came out.
it was "based" on the novel, but really hardly had anything to do with it. and the age limit was 21, not 30, to be terminated. there was even a TV series in the late 70's, that was kind of close to the movie, Sandman uniforms, their weapons, but the whole series was Logan and Jessica evading his former friend Fransis. the novel ended with Logan and Jessica finding "Sanctuary"... on Mars!

The model city was reused for "Mork & Mindy" with the blue sky replaced by a red sky. The buildings under the domes (reference intended) were inspired by real buildings that were new at the time, thus saving the designers some effort there!
Quite a few Texas locations were used in the movie as they were new and only the locals would recognize them. My brother once went to a business function for "JC Penny" and the host said something like, "If you recognize the place you probably saw it in the movie 'Logan's Run'!" 😊
The "CBS" series started the story premise over and it got to elaborate. It answers your questions about the secret government behind the AI.
The sexiest that the women's costumes got was the then newly accepted bralessness so it was a part of the "Jiggle Television" fad. Also, Jessica's underwear was often flashed because her dress was very short! That compensated for what you're seeing in the movie!
Jenny Agutter is in a WW2 movie with the newly late Donald Sutherland. She is younger in "The Railway Children". She's in the "MCU" as one of Black Widow's disguises. She's in "The Midwives".
Michael York? He's in some movies about "The Three Musketeers" and he's in the "Austin Powers" movies.
"Logan's Run " and "Star Trek" were being compared to each other for their different takes about life in the 23rd Century!
There was a big movement known as "Zero Population Growth" and this movie took advantage of it, but restricted it to a domed city that came about as a means to survive the catastrophes. In the novels it is a failed space program!
Oh! "Marvel Comics" adapted the movie and continued with their own original stories afterwards ignoring the TV series and novels.
The "Cubs" if I recall correctly were inspired by the "Miri" episode of "Star Trek".
I read a novel titled "The Eleventh Commandment" a reference to "Go forth and multiply." Generally, the Catholics win the battle about birth control and Earth becomes overpopulated like in another episode of "Star Trek" that has Kirk abducted to bring disease back to a culture as a way to cull itself.
In the 80’s I worked at Hone Club(precursor of Home Depot). Everytime they paged the new kids it was “runner”. “We need a Runner to register 3” etc always thought of this film every time they paged me over the intercom

The low-number surnames and the existence of "Old Man" would seem to indicate that the accumulated disasters happened within a normal lifetime. But then, sheesh! That city had to be built very quickly! Yet the residents inside are young enough to have no memories of a time before the city existed. The City Computer announces how old the city is as if it were the regular calendar year. It replaced "BC - AD"! Did it have a "Year Zero" then? No negative counting? 🤔
The cats! They still behave like domestic cats! That's a point in favor of a relatively short time too! 😮
I can't believe you've never seen this movie before. I remember seeing this on TV as a child in the late 70s, and loved it. Hell, I've bought it on multiple formats (VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray and Digital). Michael York plays the role very well, and Jenny Agutter was just sexy as all Hell! To be fair, she's STILL a looker, even at her advanced age.
But, hey! Since you're doing "Sci-Fi Summer"... any chance you're going to do "The Black Hole"? Disney's FIRST PG rated movie that came out in 1979. That one I saw in theaters, and it's another one I fell in love with immediately. I have yet to see any Reaction channels do that movie, and you might want to bring the boys in for that one.
Much of the costume choices are also a result of budgetary constraints.
I remember playing “Logan’s Run” after seeing this in the theater at the tender age of 11.
Another fun retro 60’s sci-fi movie is”Robinson Crusoe on Mars;” kind of the 60’s version of “The Martian.”
Richard Jordan (Francis) General Armistead in “Gettysburg.” He is excellent in the movie.

27:05 Mark! The paperback novelization was a reprint of the original novel, rather than a rewrite, but the book cover was changed from the original art to using the movie poster. In the center was a collection of movie scenes. One picture included "Box" and it made him look like a cyborg rather than a robot, because you could see the actor's actual chin, lips and teeth on the left side of his face! 😮 But lately, the pictures I've seen make him look like a total robot! No visible human parts! 😮
By the way! "DC" rather than publish a direct adaptation of "Supeman: The Movie" they reprinted "Last Son of Krypton" and used the movie poster as the cover and inserted another picture album in the center with movie scenes. The events of the movie itself were covered by one very brief chapter in the book! 😮😅
Here where I live we have an old theater and they sometimes have theme movie events during the year. Where they might show movies that have something in common.

For me, the "droids" were one of the most interesting features of that film, well before Star Wars popularized R2 and C-3PO. I really wish Hewie, Dewie or Louis would have made a cameo in the Jawa sand crawler.

Released a mere 3 weeks before I was born I first saw this at about 10 yrs old and immediately loved it, especially Peter Ustinov's character. I'm honestly shocked that it took you so long to see it, writing this before I watch the reaction so I really hope you enjoy it.
You mentioned old movie theatres. When I started at UNLV in 1980, the "Old" MGM Grand had a beautiful old-style movie theatre in their mall of shops downstairs from the gaming. They had the old curtain open fir the main movie, played cartoons or neesreels before the movie, had extra-wide reclining thickly padded seats with drink holders. They played classic films from the MGM archives.
It was heaven on Earth!
Look at the bright side, at least they weren't all wearing Nehru jackets like in "Soylent Green."

The brilliance of Peter Ustinov, born in England. Listen to his accent in this movie. Then listen to an interview with George RR Martin, born in upper New Jersey. Ustinov is doing that or a similar regional accent. What to hear his French . .er Belgium accent, watch Evil Under the Sun.
Some other interesting SF movies -- Soylent Green , The Omega Man , Silent Running , Journey to the Far Side of the Sun , Quartermass and the Pit .

Lynda Carter's "Wonder Woman" series began on "ABC" and was set during WW2. When "CBS" rescued it from cancelation they set it in the 1970s to attract more viewers. In one episode she goes to her first Science Fiction & Fantasy convention. Hey! Of course! They saved money by using costumes and props from their other SF & F series such as "Logan's Run" and "Planet of the Apes"! D'OH! 😅
Well, during that episode a "Sandman" chased a "Runner" and used his prop Blaster. The gun was basically like a cigarette lighter as the sparks were made by friction wheels, but without butane to create flames.
That had an adverse affect for real conventions! The people weren't smart enough to let security know what was going on in advance. All the guards saw were men shooting at girls and reacted accordingly! So chase scene reenactments were banned! 😮
I saw this in the cinema in 1986 for it's 10 year I was 13 years old and amazed by the colors and the sets. It was one of the very few Sci-Fi movies that my mother liked. Jessica 6 actress Dame Jenny Agutter OBE was also in "An American werewolf in London" both are very special teenage memories..
This is truly one of my all time favorites.... If you notice, the movie shows a society, that comes to depend on our technology so much for everything.. They forget how to think for themselves !!!! A movie that had a lot of people thinking about what it would really be like in the future. It did ok at the box office. But it did excellent on beta and vhs. And Roscoe Lee Brown was the most famous character on the set, at the time.
Probably replaying the frozen area/box scenes.

Loved watching this with you as a Watch-A-Long on your Patreon. Love the new Subtitles BTW. As for the theater idea, here in my town (don't know if it is running again post Covid) we had a small niche theater sitting only 50 to 60 people that showed old movies in style. Large padded chairs in groups of 2, 4 or 6 around a table for drinks (both alcoholic & non) & snake food you could order to consume while watching the movie. You could even call the Hushers during the movie for refills, it was expensive for a movie but reasonable priced as a night out.

@RKnights Not really. Low budget and tacky. Lots of stock footage from the movie. With a robot played by Donald Moffat (The Thing). Planet of the Apes TV series had a similar problem, aka low tv budget.

About Carousel, the same thing could be said for most sports nowadays, unless you're a fan. And they show those all day every day. So maybe it was the hype or it was the only game in town. I'm sure some of the people were there for the morbid thrill of watching all of the people get zapped. Others were there to support friends ("I'm turning 30 next month. You gonna be there to support me at Carousel?"). The masks were to dehumanize the victims and so you couldn't tell which one was really your friend getting killed.
I saw this in 76 at one of those old school theaters, the Cine Capri in Phoenix...That is also where I saw Star Wars opening day in 77.
It was the one theater everyone in the Phoenix area went to for a big movie night back then, it was so cool.
You can still find images of it online to see what a big production the place was, sadly it was finally torn down not too long ago and replaced with a crappy modern multi-screen theater, so sad.
Oh man Ray, excellent pick! What a unique sci-fi, one of my favorites. The concept just freaked me out when I was a kid. The carousel setting with the mask etc, was spooky. Mix that with the cavalier mindset of loose sexual freedoms was just depressing. The cultural & societal dynamics were just so bizarre. I agree with you, the sets were absolutely tremendous, bet it was something the see during construction. I’ve often wondered if Logan was chosen to go because it was deemed safe to return outside. Hope the guys are well, too bad they couldn’t join you. As always, enjoyed your commentary Ray, hope you’re doing well.
Say, have a suggestion for another fantastic sci-fi, hope you give it a reaction. It’s a George Lucas film from 1971…”THX1138”…just a really thought provoking story along the same lines as this, “1984”, “Fahrenheit 451”, “Omega Man” etc.
There was such a a stink over Farrah's one-piece bathing suit poster, and t-shirt, kids were being sent home from school for wearing it. I had one of Farrah from Logan's run. They tried to send me home for a picture of Farrah, in a pic from a scene on the movie! Fully dressed, totally normal. Just because they were so torqued about Farrah's swimsuit shirt pic!
The actual movie theater seats back then were very uncomfortable, lol...give me stadium seating anyday!

This is an awesome sci fi Movie a True Classic,i am a fan of sci fi for decades but i had not seen this one till i i saw this movie a few years ago and it instantly became a Classic Favourite.Awesome sets great acting and pure Distopian Big brother and 1984 George Orwell themes.IF i had the Money i would definately make a Movie theater and play these old movies all the time and hang out with my friends or other people that are just interested in this sort of thing.
This would be a great choice to watch in the theater today

The talented Michael York & the beautiful Jenny Agutter. As far as I remember, I always thought they were the first to get past the robot, everyone else being frozen. Will you be recommending any of these films to the rest of your crew ??

It's a nifty movie. The entire system collapsing because of Logan's mind scan was pretty weird.
And consider: they're all free now, but the vast majority are going to die because they have no skills to live outside the city.

Shawnee Smith's movie "The Island" features hovercraft like those in the novels as well as a chase scene, but others unaware of such books compared them to the "Star Wars Speeder Bikes"! 🙄
This film is based on a book and is very different. In the book they kill everyone at the age of 20. Logan runs to Florida and makes it to Sanctuary which in on a space station.
My childhood theater was the IOKA theater in Exeter, NH built in 1915, where I saw "Logan's Run" Closed now, but the building still exists. I believe there are plans to try to restore it still.
Dying at 30 was population control.
More good science fiction stories you might not have seen Soylent Green 1973, Silent Running 1972, Saturn 3 1980, Outland 1981, The Omega Man 1971, Starman 1984, They Live 1988, Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind 1977, and Tron 1982 with a young Bruce Boxleitner. Don't forget all of the Planet of the Apes movies.

The food stopped coming so the computer reduced the age limit to 30 to keep down population to the food it had. 30 year old ran and got frozen as food did. 1053 people got frozen, the missing runners.

A lot of the cast and extras were WAY past 30. The woman telling Jessica to set Logan up looks to be pushing 40. Alot of the sandmen in the dark at SM Headquarters looked fifty.

My take is it's after a nuclear war the city is built to maintain the human race, it has limited resources, and at around our 30s, our bodies start to breakdown ,women are reaching the end of there ability to reproduce ,so they need to keep the people young. no need to waist resources on the old. I would expect the Ai to be controlling the energy production facility. So it could go critical.
There's a similar back story in the Manga Battle Angel regarding the city of Zalem (it's an experiment for deep space travel, population is controlled,no natural birth. Babies are manufactured using a DNA computer. And have self defeat booths for those who can not cope)
The thing is, in productions from this era, computers were really susceptible to divide by 0 errors! Just one of them makes the computer go BOOM! There are many episodes of Star Trek TOS where societies run on computers are foiled buy this exact same issue! One more thing to think of, this movie was one year year earlier than Star Wars and it is known for being used to illustrate the big jump effects between the two.
By today's standard, this movie would have been a PG-13, but it was about 10 years before that rating would exist, so my careful parents decided that 12-year old me wasn't ready to see it yet. They weren't overly strict, the 23rd century was advertised as a place where ALL of your desires could come true and my Dad wasn't having me and desires in the same movie house with him! Here is my story of getting the book before the movie because my parents "just don't understand." Some minor spoilers from early on in the books follow.
Mom was the MVP and bought me the book, which was reissued in paperback and in any store with a magazine rack. I was just supposed to keep it hidden from my Dad, which I did! The book was written in 1967 and has a lot of sex and drug elements from the 60s and would made my Dad insane if he knew what I was reading! I had no idea what some of the things that they were doing were! But I digress...
Anyway, here is what I think they took from the book that others haven't already said. In their world, the size of the Baby Boom from the WWII era had never slowed down and not only that, it was continuing to grow yearly. Computers had advanced a little further obviously. There were lots of suggestions as to how to fix the population problem, but the young people had a big charismatic leader that came up with the solution. There was a vague battle then change happened. I think that they added domes to the movie because domes make it look more Sci Fi. They didn't take this as fact, but that sort of what happened in the book that lead up to the big change in society.
I finally got to see the movie a year later when I was 13 and was so disappointed to not see the book on the screen. I had always read the book after seeing the movie and it was the first time that it had gone the other way!
The book suggested that the young can neither create nor preserve culture, an idea I found interesting when I was pretty young. It is more relevant now. The movie wasn’t really interested in philosophy per se, though it did at least suggest that a society which prevents growth ensures decline, another timely message. I also have a higher opinion of Jenny Agutter than you, it would appear.

There was a nuclear war. The old man was downstairs in the library and his family survived. The government created this AI environment and the people didn't survive. The frozen place was a freezer that was orignially used to store veg until they ran out and started to serve people as food.
You're assuming people think logically in regards to when people saw the truth, but still were in denial of what they see.

I dunno, humanity's gone along with some crazy stuff in the tribal/culty past. A couple generations of free food and drugs, we'd probably buy it. No way I'd be that thin at 30, though.

When I went to school back in the day, the sexy costumes were a school yard topic for boys and girls alike. (You need to know that the girls from more secular and affluent families were allowed to wear halter tops and tube tops with hot pants to school during the warmer months from Second Grade on up until they fell out of fashion. Those girls didn't think of themselves as "sluts" but were thought of as such by those from poorer familes and churches in which the girls wear ankle-length dresses everyday.)
I didn't know that three of my school friends were male homosexuals until they came out in their respective "Facebook" accounts once it was deemed legal. So during those school yard conversations they ignored what the girls were wearing and focused more on the technology of "Star Trek" and "Logan's Run".
