Dear August, I’ve been watching you on RUclips for sometime now. I’m not a arborist but if I were 40 yrs younger? You inspire me with your logic and common sense that only comes with experience. A common man that knows his trade and his abilities. I really like it when you enjoy the simple beauty of work and the enjoyment you get out of it. God bless you and yours.

I was just wondering about trying that. I have a pair of Gecko steel spurs which I can't keep from sliding past my heel. The spur is way too wide. I bought a pair of Kleins and went with the cast aluminum Cadillac pads. They stay in place even with loose straps. The spur fits my boot much tighter and the top 1-1/4" strap is above my calf so the spurs can't slide down. But I still dream about making use of the Notch pads.

Good morning August, How about something off topic? I just went out on the porch to toss the coffee grounds under the big old Hydrangea bush. I almost tossed them right on a big, really long haired skunk! It was eating the seeds that fall underneath the bird feeder. I laughed, it kept eating. I figure the skunk might keep the bear away. Smiling, George,

August, when I switched to geckos I had tall leather boots and I know exactly what you are talking about with the eyelet pain. I switched to a shorter boot height, like the Evo 2 and it pairs really well with the Geckos…no pain, just comfort. The boot and the pad don’t even overlap. I understand sticking to what you are used to, but thought I would let you know it’s more the boot pairing that’s causing the pain. Love the 150t as well. Great little saw.

I agree with you it’s always best to be comfortable when cutting down trees and cutting them up into firewood. As for the trees you cut the black oak makes the best night and snow storm wood when seasoned the other tree wasn’t an oak but a Doug fir lol . I can see things are changing a bit in the lower country of the mountains ide say your about 2,500-3,500 feet in elevation where you are at. Judging by the terrain and timber. I can tell because I used to live in a very similar climate with just about the same timber in Northern California . Eldorado county at 4,000 feet but had family all over the county at various altitudes. Where you are reminded me of a little town my great grandparents lived in called Camino at 3,100 feet. Coming from 4 generations of loggers all timber fallers you get to be a good judge of elevation. Unfortunately Missouri where we now live doesn’t change that much in elevation it’s mostly 900-1,100 feet it’s highest point being 1,700 feet. And I do miss the fall colors of the mountains this country out hear doesn’t change colors as much or as bright.

Yea I’m a huge Klein/ Buckingham spikes fan. But ordered a new set of Klein pole climbers and the dang things came with an offset spike. It’s like trying to tap dance in a tree. The ones I had At Asplundh that I fell in love with we’re completely different. Those spikes were at such an angle that was perfect. I’m no fan of the offset at all. The problem with the pads on these Kleins is they’re super uncomfortable. And the upgrade to what they call Hydra Cool Climbing pads and they are nearly $300. Buckingham a and climb rites are much cheaper. This is what I get for not diving deep into upgrades on the three brands.

Some people go ga-ga for the Gecko's, and that's great. I agree with you, though, I think the shin pads are super uncomfortable, and something about the design makes me gaff out way easier. My theory has to do with how rigid the bolted-on shin pads make the whole system, but I hadn't considered the beveled point. I'll take my medieval Cadillac pads any day. I might have to pick up a pair of those lower straps, though, that's WAY nicer than fighting a buckle!

After doing tree work for many years you get a pretty good idea what you're looking at. You get a feel for it. You notice how your spurs sink in the wood. You watch and feel how the tree moves with each step. You are in a constant state of analysis. Other times you just pray and give it away.

I am a straight, pointy gaff guy too! I also love the power to weight ratio on a modded MS 150. Can trim all day with that thing! Was that last tree you were in lightning struck? The peeled bark looked like a lightning scar.

Perhaps that’s what it was. I thought it was a rub that started rotting out, created by falling timber when they put the house and road in.

@@AugustHunicke you had a closer look then us Sir, but I have been up a few lightning struck trees, which are pretty interesting to analyze the path the lightning took and the damaged caused, and the peeling bark following a vertical scar reminded me of how they looked

That 150 doesn't seem as powerful as your 2511 to me. And thought they was a bit heavier. Also what gaffs are on those, because I find the European small gaffs we have here are a pain.. they gaff out so easy🤷‍♂️... just watched the end part. See what you mean, mine are the beveled kind except smaller, can't say I've ever seen the pointy ones here🤔, maybe you need to adjust the height of shin pad?

Hi August. I got a pair of Klein spurs. Last time I used them they would stay stuck. I noticed a burr in them and sharpened with a stone. I am a tool and die maker so no worries on proper sharpening.
Will that burr keep them stuck in the tree?
