This was a great review! I'm surprised you don't have more subscribers! I loved the 15 part system you used for scoring the game. It allows for us as the viewer to see more of your thought process behind the score you gave it rather than it seeming like an arbitrary number you slapped on the game. You managed to also mix humor into the review while keeping it concise. I'm glad to hear that choice has more consequences in this game compared to previous BGS games such as Fallout 4, 76 and Skyrim as that was my favorite part of new vegas, would you mind commenting on a comparison when it comes to choice and dialog between those 2 games? I'm not expecting it to be miles better than Fallout New Vegas, but it would be nice for the game to have more replay ability when it comes to the story. I also really liked to hear that the game has a slower start but I'm wondering in what terms is it slow? Is it the story that feels slow or is it player character growth that feels slow. It is interesting to me as BGS games such as Skyrim and Fallout 4 immediately start throwing tons of stuff at you that quickly trivializes the game if used properly. I also really like that you start off as a "prisoner" or in this games case a lowly miner. I have always enjoyed the rags to riches feeling you get from BGS games. All in all this was an amazing review that I would have expected from a much larger channel. I was shocked to see you had less than 5k subs. I would love to hopefully win the giveaway as money has been a bit tight but even if I don't, good luck to everyone in the giveaway!
Thank you so much for the kind words! I really appreciate the encouragement and I'm glad you enjoyed the review :) as to your questions, I would say the writing is on par (if slightly better) than Bethesda's prior offerings, but it feels like there's just MORE here. Maybe that's half mental, as you're visiting so many novel locations compared to other Bethesda offerings, but I was still amazed by the quantity. As to my comment on player choice, there's one critical moment in the narrative in which the game will make the choice for you if you don't react quick enough. I typically like taking my time with big story decisions and was surprised when the game ended up doing it for me despite there being no countdown bar as there is in other games. Good question on pacing. Oddly enough, I'd say the story's start is both too fast and too slow. Without giving anything away, you go from mining to artifact hunting almost immediately (it's a little jarring how quickly this occurs), but then you JUST artifact mine for what feels like too long. But the rest of the story is so fun that I ended up not caring :) Hope this helps, and thanks for the great comment!
It's absolutely baffling that you still have only 4,2k subscribers. You're easily the best game reviewer on RUclips. Keep at it, the subscribers will come!
Very useful review, thank you kindly! From the (mostly spoiler-free) description, it sounds somewhat like the old 90's game "Star Control 2", in that you start out doing a lot of menial tasks in the local region, before going further out there and having to deal with a massive "situation".
You're very welcome! Glad you like the scoring format :) I, too, am very excited to see what the community does to Starfield, as the potential is basically limitless.
I'm looking forward to what modders do with this one. One reviewer talked about running into identical research facilities, mines and abandoned outposts several times within their first 20 hours. Planet exploration was never gonna be my thing, but I can't shale the thought that they under delivered here, banking on the community to add custom points of interest into the pool for years to come. I can wait a little while for Starfield to get even better. My back catalog's grown a lot this year, what with all the *great* *games* :O
@@Dragon211 For me, it was the prospect of spsce encounters that interested me more than the planetside stuff. Give me 100 smaller, cramped corridor derelicts full of mystery over millions of large, empty terrain zones that use the same 5 factories ad nauseam. But of course, modders are going to turn that into a much larger number--and unlike Skyrim and Fallout, you won't have to worry about worldspace mods conflicting with one another.
I was on the fence about buying starfield but I think I might after it releases now. I love that I can always rely on your channel to pump out high quality detailed reviews. Keep it up!
I'm so hyped for Bethesda to make a comeback with this one. They need a win in their books before dropping ES6. Great review, I'm so glad to have discovered this channel :)
Thanks for the comment, Ladaas :) Starfield is definitely a commitment! And it takes a while to get good, so probably not the best choice for folks who can only game a little here or there.
Still on the fence about purchasing this right off the bat. Thanks for the review- the score still has me questioning whether to pick it up right away or wait.
You're welcome and thanks for watching! As many have said, Starfield will only get better with time (due to polish and mods), so there's no harm in waiting.
Great review. Honestly, I figured these sort of issues would arise. One of the core reason I'm going to wait until the game goes on sale before I touch it.

Chris! You're very welcome, my friend, and thanks so much for watching. Sorry to kill some of your hype, but hopefully you still have an awesome time with Starfield :)
Thank you! I'm thrilled to get that compliment as I never have before :D I'm not sure if anyone has noticed it, yet, but the white and rainbow border makes an "M" for MEGA the micro :)
Woke up at 2am to play 6 hours straight before work - in short, I love it! Bethesda game through and through - you decide if that's better or worse - but it's just what I needed from a game.
Glad you like the system! And agreed-there's SO much that goes into a AAA (heck, even your average indie) that I'd never be able to boil it down to a single score.
ah, thanks for this! been considering upgrading my gpu and picking up some new gfx intensive titles to try- but, w/20+ hrs till the story picks up? probably not this one (till it's on sale anyway). btw- have you tried Wanted:Dead? It kind of sucks and it''s also kind of great. Definitely has the most memorable protagonist I've seen in a while.
Yeah, I actually covered Wanted: Dead back when it came out. I won't lie... I kinda ripped the game to shreds in my review lol. It definitely did have some interesting characters, though!
@@MEGAthemicro d'oh, lol! sorry man, I need to check yr back catalog! tbh, I ragequit & uninstalled after the 1st boss. 😅 I did like what they were going for, tho.
That depends! There's SO much content here that I don't think you'd get through everything before the next DLC drops, anyway. But Starfield will likely be much more playable after a couple of polish patches, so there are perks to waiting a bit. Up to you :)
Thank you! Alas, I don't have an Xbox, but I did play it on controller and mouse. IMO it handles a little better on mouse (as do most shooters), but it's a fun experience regardless.
Nice review, though I feel the lack of hand-holding in regard to major decisions is good as it lets you feel the consequences of your actions in a more real way.
Maybe you're right-the moment I describe in the review was a real emotional gut punch, especially when I realized I didn't have a viable save to reverse the consequence. It was frustrating, but emotionally meaningful and ended up making my playthrough that much more interesting.
It's at once nothing like it and exactly like it! Obviously we're in space and centuries into the future, but you'll still be doing a lot of exploring, chatting with NPCs, and steadily gathering strange magical powers. If you liked Skyrim and you like space, you'll probably like Starfield.
Great review! Feels like a very balanced take. A bit disappointed in the combat... That was the one area I was really looking forward to compared to Bethesda's other IPs. Still, looks to be engaging at least from a story perspective.
Thank you! And yes, the combat is certainly a letdown, especially given how fun space dogfights looked in the trailers. Still, the game's story and worldbuilding elements more than make up for it (imo).
I'm not and, believe it or not, I've always had an innate dislike of math 😆 how I arrived at such a number-heavy scoring system is anyone's guess. Regardless, welcome to the channel!
As usual for Bethesda, looks like it'll be a worthy game on its own but really shine once mods have patched up some of its major issues. I may end up waiting for a combat overhaul/rebalance before playing.
indeed, nothing ive seen so far screams "BUY ME". which is a real shame. hopefully in a few months modders can start to shape the game into each gamers dream.
It was a big surprise for me, too! I don't recall enjoying a Bethesda game's story elements as much as I did this one, and that's definitely saying something.
Nice review! I avoided almost all the hype for this game so have no real expectations about it but it looks alright, kinda typical Bethesda of a bit over ambitious and a bit jank. I think I'll wait a few months for patches to hopefully fix up some of the Beth Jank and mods to improve what Beth won't to come out before diving in myself.
Thank you very much! Starfield was hyped beyond measure, and you're probably better off having avoided all that because it's definitely going to take a few patches before the game reaches its full potential. Hope you end up enjoying it whenever you do play :)
Thanks Mega. 20 hour campaign for $70 doesn't exactly have me bursting with excitement but I've been a Bethesda fanboy since Morrowind so shut up and take my money (space credits).
You're welcome! I, too, was a little underwhelmed by the campaign's duration, but if it'll of course feel longer if you break it up with those epic-long side quests I described.
My take from all of this is that devs should just stop giving out review copies altogether and stop treating publications and "influencers" as if they are special because their opinions don't even matter. It's all a bunch of 'catch me outside'
I've heard many developers and publishers say that the only score that matters to them is the Steam score. Everything else is just for show (and I say this as one of those "influencers").
I always enjoy your reviews and this one is no exception. The game having glaring issues with combat and performance is not surprising at all. Bethesda is as Bethesda does.
Sounds like a standard Bethesda title, the first playthrough is definitely going to be worth it and then the mods will start flooding in I guess. Here's hoping the engine is similar to Skyrim's latest updates so that people can optimize it with mods sooner rather than later 😂
Yep! Par for the course for ol' Bethesda, which is both awesome and a little disappointing. But you're right-mods could make Starfield feel like a GOTY experience.
Although I really wanted, it was really hard for me to enjoy this game. Game design is old, there so many loading screens, characters never felt like real people to me. To me felt like an unimmersive experience on a dated engine. I can't believe they are still shipping games with that weak crappy engine and the worst of all is that they plan on using this very same shitty engine on fallout 5 and TES 6. Aside from that, great review (even though I disagree with it). As always, love your content, your channel is criminally overlooked!
Thank you for watching and for the detailed comment! I'm sorry that Starfield's characters and visuals didn't grab you like they did me, though I definitely share your concerns with the game's playability. It's classic Bethesda, through and through. I'm curious, though-did you play the game with any mods? None were available at the time of my playthrough, and I was hoping some good ones have since been developed.
That's fair. Starfield makes for a conflicting experience-for me, the highs ended up outweighing the lows, but I empathize with anyone who feels otherwise.
What I'm hearing is Bethesda/Todd Howard is being too proud to accept and utilize the resources at Microsofts disposal to make a real AAA experience. They still want to be an Indie developer despite the success they have claimed. I could respect that if it wasn't for the fact that they sold out to a mega corporation
That's very interesting. Do you have an article or anything that speaks to the subject? I'd love to read more, as it explains why Bethesda games always come stuffed with jank.
Not here to disagree, as everyone gets their opinion, but I'd love to hear what games you think deserve a "5" for plot, characters, and dialogue. I will also take the opportunity to clarify that, for a game like Starfield, the Plot score is accounting for all of those robust, multi-hour, narrative-driven side quests, in addition to the main quest.
nice score system In fact you convinced me not to buy the game.I see and understand all the nice aspects of such a game but fro mthe image and the test i think i find it too bland. Ships don't like punchy nor heavy and with an tactical "the expanse" way to pilot, on foot gameplay seems generic and with a Destiny 2 feel. I'll pass. Thank you, it's a useful test and thanks to you i know it may be a good game but nto a game for me
Glad you found the scoring system useful! One of the reasons I built it that way was to make things super transparent to the viewer, so I'm happy to hear it helped you make a decision.
I originally had a section unpacking the powers you get, but then deleted it as it felt too spoilery. But I opted to leave a little glimpse of them in there, as I thought it might pique people's interest in the game 😁
@@MEGAthemicro It's good, it's good, but I have been hearing reviewers say that they don't want to talk about the magic since it kinda is a spoiler. Will be finding out on actual release next Wednesday, I just hope I don't arrive to the game knowing the whole plot.

I'm curious, though-did you play the game with any mods? None were available at the time of my playthrough, and I was hoping some good ones have since been developed.
I can appreciate this review for what it is.
Starfield gets a 2.3/5 from me.
That's fair. Starfield makes for a conflicting experience-for me, the highs ended up outweighing the lows, but I empathize with anyone who feels otherwise.
@@MEGAthemicro The flaws accumulated the more I played it until it was just unbearable.
Interesting to hear other takes for sure.
I'd love to read more, as it explains why Bethesda games always come stuffed with jank.
great video
Thank you very much!
Thanks for this (again) amazing video. Way better than IGN, who give every game a 7
You bet! Really glad you enjoyed it and thanks so much for watching :)
good review
Thank you very much :)
Wow, the game is... Bittersweet
Don't worry, it's more sweet than bitter :)
Nah, 5 for story it is not. A 3.75 to 4, for sure. Or a better way to rate it would be 7/10. This game is pure 7 to 7.5.
Mmmm
nice score system
In fact you convinced me not to buy the game.I see and understand all the nice aspects of such a game but fro mthe image and the test i think i find it too bland.

Ooopsey ooopsey, people might not be happy with the 3 seconds of magic that you showed.

A 1000 explorable planets.. Yeah that aged like milk. How do you like your package of lies for around 100$? This is bgs, bgs never changes. War does...
