The new GLA looks like a proper SUV now, rather than looking like a jacked up A Class! The fake exhaust tips is absolutely pointless and very annoying but I forgive them because the car looks sick!
DAMN! 70K? That's in the Porsche Macan range. What is Mercedes thinking? The auto does look impressive but not for the price they're asking. Would you pay 70K for this Thomas?

This model is being built in Germany, Rastatt. Right now the factory is closed down, but I read somewhere that it will open 20 april again. Have you any update on that? I live in Sweden and don’t read german news because of the language barrier, mabye you have some recent update. I ordered one in the end of february, one week before the Corona, yes, I know, it´s called timing... Been waiting every day since for a review on this car with that engine, prefably yours. I ordered the Progressive line with same engine and 4Matic, with all options exept metallic (ordered white), ventilated seats, and only 19” wheels and comfort chassie. But now the looong wait for delivery begins, last update from the agent was august, it started with july. That is five months from now in the calendar, sigh! Double-sigh! Really like your reviews by the way, seen many. PS Payed little over 55k for it, not 70.
Hi Thomas, I am from Canada 🇨🇦 and work at a MB dealership in Edmonton. As a guy born in Germany I love to see your auto test videos. Always so well and informative made!!! Thank you so much, very enjoyable !! Keep going that way.👍🏽😀 Hans
Hi, I would like to say that you are probably doing the best car reviews i have ever seen among many different channels. Thank you for your detailed, serious and thorough testing. Keep up the good work. I wonder if is in your plans a review of the new GLA with the 1,3 litres engine (163 PS). In Greece (where i come from) is the most popular and affordable engine. Thank you.
Please also show the plug-in variant (GLA250e) when it comes. Also the CLA250e Shooting Brake would be nice to see. There are too few estate cars as plug-in/full electric
I had pretty high expectations with this car. Mat Watson said that you can hardly feel the bumps at all. But when I test drove it, I was quite disappointed. It was bumpy, loud road noise, and rattling sounds in the back. The A-Class I test drove was much better.
After speccing it on the MB website - I get to around 45K EUR. with some deduction that is a competitive price if compared to Q3 or xc40 or even range rover. Yes, it is a bit smaller - but for my size and needs it is plenty. And in this day - I would think rather having the merc than a VAG product. :/
optional LED lamps? Does that mean base trim has classic headlights without LED technology? PS: I always google the song that you have on your iMusic and it's always and awesome trance song - Thomas you have a great taste, you should make a playlist - driving music:) Maybe on your Instagram? :) Cheers!
nice vid, i just bought one gla 250 4 matic. i m very happy with it. the price is indeed a bit much. But i think it s the best in class when it comes to interior room.
How did Mercedes increase the space for knee room in the rear by so much ?? The wheelbase grew by only 3cm but you have 12 cm ! more legroom. This is incredible ...
@@autogefuehl Yes but still, 12 cm ? That's a lot more knee room for such a compact car. Even the GLB doesn't offer that much more legroom although it is the same platform and has a 10 cm longer wheelbase. But nice review again :-)
@@mart_en True, it is incredible. Remember, the wheelbase increased, yes, but the length from the dashboard cockpit of the car to the grille could be shortened too, all seats became thinner and curved, the car frame is not as thick, but it is stronger, the materials are softer and plush, they found better ways to dampen the car. All that can be added up to more space.
@@ClaireYunFarronXIII Yes true but I don't know about the changed distance from dash to grille though. Every car show says the frontal overhang got shorter but this is not true. It is still as long as in the previous GLA ( 90,5 cm ). The shortage of 3,5 cm was entirely taken on the rear overhang of the car.
As usual, a great detailed review. I was particularly interested in this one because I owned a 1st gen GLA (200). I think this new one isn't as sexy/sporty looking as 1st gen, great the imporved habitability though, that was a bit too short before. But man, the price is ridiculous ! I configured a very well equipped GLC Coupé 200 (same motor + EQ Boost) for 67 kEUR. No way I would buy this GLA vs GLC Coupé !
Great review as usual. I’ve been waiting for this review. Prefer the looks of this car to the previous model. Looking forward to how the 35 will match up to the old 45 on its release.
Thank you, Thomas. ❤🇩🇪 Great detailed review I always appreciate. You know, this video came at such a great time, because in just six days it is my birthday/anniversary for when I bought a Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 way back in 2012, haha. First car. My baby. I bought it as a birthday gift to myself, and now I miss it so much. This is the first year since 2012 where it was not with me. I sold it less than five months ago. Here are my *many* thoughts on this new one in comparison to my old one: I will just start by saying that this new one is WAY better than the old one, even the 2019 GLA, in my opinion. Mercedes-Benz has really given it their all with this one in every way. The exterior - This is hard, because I loved the old one very much. It had a very cute but wide look, which I liked. Kinda looked chubby and tall. But...I think this new one is much better looking. The interior - The new one is a huge step up in quality and style, in my opinion. The old one, while I liked it, did have some hard plastics and cheap spots, but it was still good. The new one is much more expensive looking, stunning, and more elegant, in my opinion. But hey, when I was in University I spilled my drinks and food a lot, so those plastics were a welcome. Haha. Now, Mercedes-Benz barely has any plastics or cheap materials. My new C-Class barely has any. The amount of cheap plastics in my GLA is more than what they have in all their vehicles combined today. The technology - The new one is objectively much better than the old one. The screen in the old one lagged, the map was pretty decent, and bluetooth and satellite connectivity was...ehhh. All I can say is that...it worked. The cruise control was very good, actually. Engine and Transmission was good, but not as smooth as the current GLA, of course. After six years or so, it started whistling. Safety tech in the old GLA was also...ehh. It worked, but I never used it. There was only one time when this car really broke. It picked the worst day to break! It picked a specific day to break on me! Funny story, lol, but not funny at the time! The new Mercedes-Benz cars systems are a must-have! They work all the time. The new MBUX is way better than the old one. The new one is more intuitive, customizable, clear, and very responsive. The software is better too. The practicality - The old one was surprisingly roomy back there. Like, I hauled some pretty large stuff back there. I did not feel squished or limited, especially given its size. It was still kinda small. The new one - given the figures - is larger, though. Off-road activity was doable, especially driving in Ladysmith...which is notorious for bad travel. The GLA took a beating for years on those "roads." This new one is perhaps better. The seats were very comfortable for its time. The ride was also pretty comfortable. But at the end of the day, it was not on the GLC, GLE or GLK's level. The conclusion - The new one is an improvement in every way, and I think it is a leap in the right direction. To fellow Mercedes-Benz customers, I recommend this new GLA. Thank you for reading this overly long comment of my thoughts, Thomas. Sorry for the length and messiness of it. Stay safe and have a great day. ❤

As is always the case, Germany gets edition 1’s on launch, various trim levels, numerous wheel and trim options, whereas in the UK we have to wait at least 2/3 years for any sort of customisation! 😡😡😡
Thank you Thomas, can you do a review on the Mercedes safety systems in a video? One thing i'm confused with is, if a car is fitted with distronic, say a W123, would the car only stop if distronic is enabled , or can it do it whether it is enabled or not.
Am I the only one who sees a touch of a Honda CR-V with this guy? Beautiful interior, however. I love my C class coupe, and would consider another Benz in the future. Fantastic review as always!
I’m confused ....This is a video of the new 2020 GLA and this video is only two months old, but I have seen other videos which are talking about the 2021 GLA that has been released, so which is the new vehicle the 2020 or the 2021 GLA?.
Speaking from experience of the older one I had for a long time...yes. I can't say yet for this new one. It just came out less than a year ago. But I expect the same.
Hi Thomas. do you know if its the same engine they use in the A250? cause it would be nice to be able to buy a Mercedes with a proper Mercedes engine. I can't understand why such a nice brand uses engines from the Renault company.
@@ClaireYunFarronXIII well at least it ages beautifully design wise . . . the new one ( front design ) 2 me doesn't presents the E class vibe , sure it might be more powerfull , heck it looks BAD even compared to the CLA , the CLA and GLA has transformed into a one great looking car ( design wise ), now im worried how the C and S might look :(
Hi Thomas. As you know i love your reviews. However something that probably is missing is a further detail on gearbox. As you know the previous (i own one) has 7 speed gearbox. Did 8 really improved the day life? Also parking assistant? In previous it cant control gearbox and now? Remember is a city car so i want to know how to use in city not only 60-100 in highway ;)
early w156 body has a great looking very proportional look of NORMAL hatchback from 90s with good road clearance when you could drive off the good pavement or park the car with front bumper to a border
This new platform looks fancy compared to old one, but who will buy it for the price and extras, fake exhausts... if i wondering to buy it, i'll choose GLB! Nice review as always Thomas!
Thanks for this very good review Thomas. I am really between B200 and GLA200 now. Today I looked both of them in the showroom again nearly 1,5 hour. They have almost same interior. Same driving position. With completely same specs (AMG line) and same engine B200 is 48000 Euros and GLA200 is 59000s Euro in Netherlands. I am more B200 side now. It seems a really price performance car and in this condition it is 11000 Euros cheaper. What do you think? Does this GLA200 really deserve that price difference when compared with the B200? Thanks in advance.
thanks! Yeah they are indeed very similar. The GLA gives you more modern SUV style whereas the GLB looks more van-ish. But the B-Class is clearly the better price-performance-ratio. Never does a GLA justify 11 k extra price. As you said, they are the same cars in different body styling.
I wonder how much investment is required to design and set up the production of the AMG models in comparison to income from their sales. Each Mercedes has an AMG version now and I find it hard to believe that a B-class AMG will be sold in the thousands. It seems like overkill to me.
Not really. These all have their markets, so they will sell a lot. B-Class and Estate AMGs are very popular in Europe. We love them. Besides, an AMG production number is based on how many originals are sold. There are less GLE 63s produced than GLC 63s, because more GLCs than GLEs have been sold. They do not make the same number of AMGs for every Class.
I feel like a small but overlooked topic to do with cars right now is the spare tire. Run flats don't cut it at all. I thought engineering is about improving things. Not going backwards. I've loved Mercedes but that one fact alone forces me to have to look elsewhere.
First of all I praise Thomas for his professionally beautiful review showing no favor and no hypocrisy. So every cars enthusiast and customer know every detail of the car. No surprise here: fake exhaust pipes, doors closing only if you push harder and gas trap opening if you simply touch it. This Mercedes is built in China. But the only think that reminds us it’s a German car is the price tag = 74k€ ! WTF!
The interior is from B class, not from A class.I think that the interior of A class is much better and more modern with sport seats.A class in Denim blue, brown leather,AMG line with night package and with black19 rims is the BEST.
Something feels very off about that price. Sure this one is an Edition 1 with what appears to be the AMG trim line. But even with every conceivable option this shouldn’t top out more than $58k. Unless there are some crazy new options Mercedes offers.
Autogefühl thank you. That’s $20k in options at a $36k base price still doesn’t add up. I actually configured a current GLA (in US) with every single option available and the base was $36k and it topped out at $56k, without taxes, registration, and normal upfront costs. If $70k is for real I would imagine a GLA35 to go for over $80k and a GLA45 to go for almost $100k. Those are E-class numbers. That’s not right.
Autogefühl So....the big option you omitted is the Edition One add. That’s almost $8k EU. That’s a huge difference and can certainly add up quickly along with all of the other options you listed which are not part of the Edition 1 package. So the 20k in options you listed along with the almost $8k for the Edition 1 package added to a $38k base price takes us to about $66k.
Very comprehensive review. However it's far too expensive. It's in Porsche Macan territory which has superior handling and a higher quality interior. I also fear that it'll suffer from high depreciation: my last car was a GLC and it lost 50% of it's value in 21 months :(
@@ClaireYunFarronXIII There is alot of plastic. Unless you get packages and stuff the rear doors are all plastic. It's disgusting. Then even with upgrade packages, you'll see that everything below that thin strip of soft touch on the door tops and the inlay above the door armrest, is hard plastic. The door pockets aren't even lined in cloth, the glove box cover is hard plastic, the door handles are not metal it's silver plastic that creaks if you pull too hard on it, the surrounds on the insides of the windows is exposed so you can see the vehicle colour inside the car when looking at the windows, you can't even release the rear seats with levers in the boot/trunk, 2 silly tiny screens that don't look great are standard, things move and creak of you touch them too hard, the engine in the 200 models (the 1.33) is noisy and unrefined and vibrates the whole vehicle at higher revs. I could go on. Mercedes never used to make cars of such poor build and material quality nor with such poor engines. Having had experience with many of their cars since 2004, it's just been a downward spiral. I am a diehard Mercedes fan and driving an E Class myself. But having test driven many of their new models to replace my current E, I walked away constantly disappointed and ended up not buying any. They'll soon lose many loyal existing customers with the route they're going. I'll get from a manufacturer that's actually trying then like Mazda or Genesis. The star doesn't mean what it used to.

cool, good to read from you as a pre-gen customer!

Great review thx! Do you think this would be big enough for a family of 3 including a 13 year old son? Or am i better off with the GLB? Thx
GLB. See it here: ruclips.net/video/lbR8IQVkjU8/видео.html
Citroen ds4 ?
Which is better
This one or the xc40?
compare the XC40 here: ruclips.net/video/VLwQoNa8ySY/видео.html
As is always the case, Germany gets edition 1’s on launch, various trim levels, numerous wheel and trim options, whereas in the UK we have to wait at least 2/3 years for any sort of customisation! 😡😡😡
Thank you Thomas, can you do a review on the Mercedes safety systems in a video? One thing i'm confused with is, if a car is fitted with distronic, say a W123, would the car only stop if distronic is enabled , or can it do it whether it is enabled or not.
hey Michael, there is an extended safety systems demo in this video: ruclips.net/video/dHhLED0Vvvw/видео.html
Am I the only one who sees a touch of a Honda CR-V with this guy? Beautiful interior, however. I love my C class coupe, and would consider another Benz in the future. Fantastic review as always!
thanks Mark !!
@@autogefuehl Stay safe out there.
any opinions between This GLA or BMW X2??
compare it here: ruclips.net/video/O6BOWXoTJ3k/видео.html
I’m confused ....This is a video of the new 2020 GLA and this video is only two months old, but I have seen other videos which are talking about the 2021 GLA that has been released, so which is the new vehicle the 2020 or the 2021 GLA?.
Depends on sales perspective. Its the all new model, u can also say 2021
This vehicle looks STUNNING. They are very popular where I live. Are they reliable?
Speaking from experience of the older one I had for a long time...yes. I can't say yet for this new one. It just came out less than a year ago. But I expect the same.
it has renault engine, so it should be.
What kind of car do you drive??
It seems I need to make an episode on that
Hi Thomas. do you know if its the same engine they use in the A250? cause it would be nice to be able to buy a Mercedes with a proper Mercedes engine. I can't understand why such a nice brand uses engines from the Renault company.
yes of course. Details explained here also in the engine part
compared to the previous one it's like heaven vs hell
I loved the previous one. It was very practical and amazing, but it was showing its age as any car would.
@@ClaireYunFarronXIII well at least it ages beautifully design wise . . . the new one ( front design ) 2 me doesn't presents the E class vibe , sure it might be more powerfull , heck it looks BAD even compared to the CLA , the CLA and GLA has transformed into a one great looking car ( design wise ), now im worried how the C and S might look :(
LOL 70K, i hope after covid19, 30% discount
Hi Thomas. As you know i love your reviews. However something that probably is missing is a further detail on gearbox. As you know the previous (i own one) has 7 speed gearbox. Did 8 really improved the day life? Also parking assistant? In previous it cant control gearbox and now? Remember is a city car so i want to know how to use in city not only 60-100 in highway ;)
thanks! 8 vs 7 is not a major gamechanger, but it's more like "why not "...
early w156 body has a great looking very proportional look of NORMAL hatchback from 90s with good road clearance when you could drive off the good pavement or park the car with front bumper to a border
As always, you did a very thorough and comprehensive review! But, for that price, why not buy a C class? Be safe, stay safe.
This new platform looks fancy compared to old one, but who will buy it for the price and extras, fake exhausts... if i wondering to buy it, i'll choose GLB! Nice review as always Thomas!
thanks pedro!
Plss do the "normal"gas GLA200 car.Thanks
This here was not the amg engine
@@autogefuehl Ok.thanks.I got confused by the wheel which is not round typical for amg.
AMG Line adds the visual stuff indeed.Too big these wheels for the car for sure
Excellent review I have been waiting for. Thanks. Í m concidering the gla based eqa. Animal free of course.
awesome!
I prefer the previous model
Your outfit matches the red details of this GLA haha 😁💪
of course =)
I love all your interview but can you geting the video short 15 min is better. Good job

This will be my second car in 2022
I don't like those flat wheel arches, reminds me of the old gen tiguan.
Can we please always have the fake exhaust police! 🤣🤣🤣
🤣
Very nice review Thomas, once again! That’s a nice car but I’m honestly starting to be tired of the SUV fashion...
thanks keep supporting us!
This is so beautiful car 👍😍
Something feels very off about that price. Sure this one is an Edition 1 with what appears to be the AMG trim line. But even with every conceivable option this shouldn’t top out more than $58k. Unless there are some crazy new options Mercedes offers.
Magno paint 2 k, 20" wheels 2k, driver assistance and mirror package 2,5 k, MBUX advanced 3.5, keyless go 1 k, rear view cam 360 1,5 k, anti theft 1 k, multibeam LED plus some tech 3 k, energizing pack 2k , panoramic roof 1 k, small rest options 1 k -> voilà 70 k :P
Hm not a fan of the new GLA.. the regular A class looks miles better. If I want a small SUV, I’d go for the Q3
...or a top-spec Tiguan SEL (or Highline) with every extra option boxed ticked - less money, and better spec!
If Audi and Porsche had a baby
The new Mercedes GLA is a beautiful car, however from 220 engines up!
fake exhaust police here, Officer Blue, Thomas Blue
🚨🚨🚨🚨
Very comprehensive review. However it's far too expensive. It's in Porsche Macan territory which has superior handling and a higher quality interior. I also fear that it'll suffer from high depreciation: my last car was a GLC and it lost 50% of it's value in 21 months :(
Cheers!
I don't think the price is justified for this model when there is so much interior plastics.
