having internet connectivity makes no sense since we already have advanced internet connected devices - our cell phones, tablets, etc. Amateur radio is supposed to be used for emergencies and disasters when there are no other comms or even power available and all your internet bells and whistles will be unavailable then. Internet ham radio is like a wilderness survival cooking stove with a wall plug.
Thank you for your comment. We disagree. Ham radio is a big sandbox where there's virtually no limit on where you can explore. The world's your oyster! Have fun!
It's really nice to be out in the middle of the mountains where no internet is available and still create some kind of local area network with someone 55 miles away.
I never thought about it before, but it's interesting to see that digital radio is able to connect with the internet. I wonder if there's a situation where that could ever be a bad thing. You might want the ability to use the radio without it connecting to the internet, because in an apocalypse scenario, the internet might not be working, or in a dictatorship scenario, where the internet is censored and controlled by the authorities, you would want a radio that's totally independent.
Why wouldn't you assume there would be a way to turn it off? I mean you can do that with your phone, so why wouldn't they build that into a radio. Also, most digital radios also do analog.
@@dangerous8333 If you turn off the internet on your phone it almost always is not off. All it does it keep you from using internet/gps, but your phone is still connected and sending data packets on your activities. In fact even if you take out the battery such as on older phones, there is still a secondary internal battery that keeps running for some time.
I just got my Tech ticket last Sept. I did not know enough to do any research on my location as to repeaters. Option 1 analog or option 2 digital. Fortunately I chose digital. I happen to live in a location that is more like a repeater desert. With my 878 and SkyBridge I was able to access the world. Many thanks to Duane and Sebastian. Had I gone in the analog direction I would have lost enthusiasm and interest. Digital was the best place for me to start and grow. Working now to get my General.
We are elated to hear that your experience with DMR has been a positive one! Our goal in creating the SkyBridge was to allow everyone to connect to the world no matter where they were located. We are glad you were able to do so. Good luck on getting your General! 73
You can absolutely use digital radio without going through a digital network. In some cases, you can use digital voice modes in simplex or in conventional repeater mode just like analog. I do this regularly on P25. Don't be fooled - you absolutely do NOT have to use a digital network.
You can use your radio in simplex or with conventional repeaters, depending on the radio. To get the most out of radio and access TGs, we recommend utilizing a digital network.
Gday mate, I’ve a noob question for you. Can I talk to someone who has a standard uhf 40 or 80 channel radio with a digital radio if I’m tuned into their frequency or do they have to be digital to decode. Are the standard uniden 40ch radios digital or analogue... Thanks heaps for your time and the awesome video

I have been looking for a video that explains how to set up an antenna for a digital radio. When I look online all I find are analog, do you know of anyone who has any info on this?
You'll need a digital radio because a hotspot is an internet gateway to a DMR network. You would need a digital radio to communicate with someone who's using the internet to make a contact.
How hard would it be for someone to make their own Digital Radio that can use MERS? If your wondering why I’m asking I have a Dell 7220 I’m putting in my side by side and I want to make something similar to the Garmin tread and which is like a cb + gps

So get a radio that does both.
🤷

Actually D-star works both analog and digital

Thanks Cody i learn a lot form this Video
Noob Here, can you do Digital with out going through DMR or one of the others?
Hi John, you'll have to use a digital network, such as Brandmeister, NXDN, YSF, etc., to get on digital radio.

Hi Alex! Put your question to the group in our Facebook Official Group Page. Someone in this group should know.
Yes, it uses the same frequencies

Can you please explain the process of how a digital radio set receives audio, processes it and sends the signal through antenna to receiver station

Thank you for your comment!

I thought this was for portable radios like transistor radios
Thank you for your comment.
Can I use an analog HT to transmit to the hotspot or do I have to have a digital radio?
You'll need a digital radio because a hotspot is an internet gateway to a DMR network. You would need a digital radio to communicate with someone who's using the internet to make a contact.
Do you technically need a license to use digital radio other than DMR? Do you need to insert your call sign?
Thank you for your comment. All Amateur radios require a license to operate.
@@BridgeComSystemsInc yea I know that you are supposed to, but I mean for emergencies
@@Telyron emergencies you don't need to have a license
