As a newcomer who's taking his foundation license in November I've spent every evening the last 3 weeks trying to get my head around repeaters & hot spots, and you just nailed them so thank you. I used AM/FM/SSB back in the late 70's and early 80s so this time warp is hard for someone like me to understand and you laid it down beautifully. One thing that does puzzle me and I'm guessing many newcomers feel the same way is sourcing groups or rooms. Is it that you just look around and find groups you get on with or is there some way of sourcing them by interest? Or am I completely missing the mark with all this?
With all the Raspberry Pi sold out or insanely expensive, is there a way to create an MMDVM using a Windows or Linux laptop? I have 5 computers lying around going to waste. It just seems like everything needs a Raspberry to function. I don't get the obsession with Raspberry when we should be able to use any computer to do the same thing. :)
The concepts of transmitting your radio to a hot spotted network connection 20 ft away seems like it's defeating the point. At that point why not just have a mic connected to the internet transmitting to the networks? Is it not just VoIP with extra steps?

Wiresx is owned by Yaesu and a proprietary network so they only allow their own equipment to connect to it. A reflector is simply a talkgroup or a room

I use an OPENSPOT2 and a Yaesu FT70 . C4FM digital voice on 440 to the Openspot2. It links via wifi (usally my phones hotspot) to DMR Talkgroups online or to YSF Reflectors. Thoe DMR TG and YSF Reflectors are often connected to repeaters around the world as well as other digital groups online SW Washington while mobile to ther DX3L and a Manila philippines net is common.
I'm an old new ham. Due to "life" I've been out of radio for a couple decades. Now that I'm back, my bride bought me an Icom 7300 and a Yaesu FT3D. I have a LOT to learn about both radios and what's happened during my Rip Van Winkle. I've been active on EchoLink for a while and would like to connect via radio rather than computer, for a few reasons. 1) so I'm not stuck at my desk, 2) so I'm actually using my radio, not just internet chatting. Using a hotspot is that possible/reasonable?
Welcome back. Those are both great radio choices. Yes you can use a hotspot with the FT3D to connect into various DV mode networks, such as Yaesu System Fusion, DMR and maybe DSTAR. The hotspot will require an internet connection, like an Echolink repeater does.
So can you connect to an iPhones hotspot with the ham “hotspot” so it has internet access? Then connect your HT like the Kenwood d75 to the ham hotspot when not in areas with repeaters but have cell coverage?

But duplex, do you mean dual timeslot? Those are basically only good for DMR because DMR uses both timeslots. Yes you can increase the power on a hotspot, but most of them are low power due to the raspberry-pi or main computer board only providing low power.
Ok i got it. The duplex hotspot useful for double timeslot. I searched a little about it and "Technically" some rf amplifiers avaliable for double antenna(duplex?) hotspots(tx and rx antenna different). These rf amplifiers increase the output power from 0.1W to 5W. I don't know, in my country amateurs can't own a repeater. This option may work for my situation. Thanks for again. 😅@Ham Radio 2.0

It doesn't convert the analog to a digital format as I was under the impression that it did. So some of the locals in my club are using P25, others local to my region are using Dstar and DMR+. Whats your recommendation on HT and digital voice Hotspot. Also is there a Hotspot to program to switch between one mode and the other quickly(on the fly)?

I have a number of projects and work is taking up a lot of my nights but if you wanted too take a little time and put a quick vid together that shows how to setup the hotspot (pi-zero) to allow a Yaesu 991a to do DMR via the YSFTODMR and vice versa features that would be very helpful. I am told this can be done....

New to ham radio... trying to get APRS and DMR up and running. I just got an Anytone 878+ and I am trying to get it up and running. I live in rural WV and have realized I am going to need to get a hotspot. This was good to help me better understand some of the hotspot terminology and what to look for. I am looking at multiple timespots, ethernet & wifi capable... what are some other things that I need to be looking for?

Neither of which this hotspot will do. This hotspot connects VOICE through and RF connection between your radio and the hotspot, over the internet to someone on the other end.

We lost our way as a hobby as soon as we failed to understand the meaning of the word "wireless" and follow other digital internet based commercial options. Reminder , Anyone can talk around the world using the internet ( no big deal anymore, nothing special, many hams are there using only their phone or computers ), Yet, only some of you will make the connection wireless, that means, from one point to the other , antenna to antenna , overcoming noise, propagation problems. location , available space and much more. Nevertheless, if wires and Hotspots is your hobby, than good for you, go for it , we are here learning , just like everyone else and as such we won't go breaking anyone's delusions of wireless communications here. yes, we do work digital, but point to point, simplex, local repeater only, antenna to antenna, some still having respect to the core of our ( once called ) wireless hobby. Let's have fun and keep it real.
That is the beauty of DV modes in Ham Radio. You don't *need* to have a hotspot or internet connection to use them. They are still real radios. But connecting them over the internet does expand their capability.

You can set it to a freq and color code of your choosing (for DMR) and change the password on it, but it isn't overly secure

It doesn't provide Internet access, it connects to to DV rooms on the Internet, but you'll need Internet from somewhere else
Good show but it would have been better with graphics, images, and a block diagram. Some are visual learners. Perhaps you can post a block diagram.

No, not yet - nothing like that exists right now.

Dual timeslot hotspots are basically only good on DMR. It allows you to monitor 2 TGs, the same way you would on a DMR repeater.

We lost our way as a hobby as soon as we failed to understand the meaning of the word "wireless" and follow other digital internet based commercial options.
Reminder , Anyone can talk around the world using the internet ( no big deal anymore, nothing special, many hams are there using only their phone or computers ), Yet,
only some of you will make the connection wireless, that means, from one point to the other , antenna to antenna , overcoming noise, propagation problems. location , available space and much more.
Nevertheless, if wires and Hotspots is your hobby, than good for you, go for it , we are here learning , just like everyone else and as such we won't go breaking anyone's delusions of wireless communications here.
yes, we do work digital, but point to point, simplex, local repeater only, antenna to antenna, some still having respect to the core of our ( once called ) wireless hobby.

That is the beauty of DV modes in Ham Radio. You don't *need* to have a hotspot or internet connection to use them. They are still real radios. But connecting them over the internet does expand their capability.
@@HamRadio2 Real radio is great, after all, Wireless is our hobby ( look it up), BUT using the internet ?? how low will this wireless hobby go ?? and because " the internet does expand their capability ( DV Mode) " ??? .
Let's use the wired phone because it will expand our ability to communicate ( this was tried in the past when linking repeaters, no joke, "Dail a repeater" this great idea was obviously voted out as not being part of a TRUE wireless system ) those who were pushing this idea used the very same logic as your argument " expanding their capability " or, some of us hams can not put up a radio/antenna, buy a radio, lack of propagation ( and ability to deal with it ) as well as many other excuses galore. yes, it was sad.
As we see it, we might be talking about another kind of wired/cell phone communication-based hobby ( when the internet is used as a magical " antenna" to the hotspot. lol ), here we have something NEW altogether ( and there is nothing wrong with it ), this internet-based communication special interest group is growing and it is great, a lot to learn and do, but should come under a different classification.
"Wired digital Communication" comes to mind, well, anyway, certainly not Wireless, time to be honest with ourselves as a group.

Have you "ever" helped a new, interested person get into this great hobby? T With the attitude that you seem to have, I would think that if you did, they probably didn't stay interested very long. So yes, we helped many people in this hobby (and still do), we provided lessons, helped with building antennas radios converters as well as other WIRESSLSS digital projects, all in the spirit of fun and learning.
We still believe that a wireless hobby should be wireless, we have no issues with digital progress ( computer Eng on this side ) for as long as we keep true to this wireless hobby. Anyone who has a digital phone can talk to anyone on the internet those days, not a big deal, BUT we are making magic happen with antennas and not Internet wires that are used as antennas connecting to the world. Our hobby is wireless ( last time we looked ).

I was looking at getting in to DMR first but now it just seems like a very complicated cellphone...which I already have. You're simply just replacing your Garfield rotary phone with a DMR radio....unless I'm missing something. OVER

With the right hardware can a dmr hotspot on say a pi4b pull dual duty and also be used with my hf radio for ft8 and other hf digital modes at he same time?
Never tried. I think you would run into issues trying to do this, though.
