Ive been playin country music for over forty years and my problem has always been chording. i focus on singing and the guitar as accompaniment so I really never focused on .learning the guitar and have always had problems figuring out the chords. Even without a pick, it is quite easy.
None of the music I've looked up says to play with a capo at the 3rd fret.
Take it easy...he's just setting the capo up where it's comfortable for him to sing.
