    Look Johnny we have been working with 308 ar for years in hopes of having a truly reliable semi-auto intermediate sniper platform. We have tested high end to entry level and every modification thats out there to the guns. We have finally concluded that there are simply too many variables in an ar platform to get an ar to shoot like a bolt gun. Yes you can go out one day and it be awesome, the next it will be off even with the exact load. We load precision for many years so we are covered on that end. One main factor that can not be ignored it metallurgy... aluminum moves! No matter what aluminum moves with temperatures. We have found this even in chassis guns. The guys that show up for training with these newer chassis guns consistently have more poa shift problems than any McMillan or manners style stock. Now through our years of frustration we have singled out many accuracy depleting causes in the ar platform. I never want to tell a guy to quit or give up, cause if we do that we will never get through our problems. But that said, I dont feel that your 308 ar issues are truly ammo related.

    Johnny. I am going out on a limb here. You earn every penny of support for your channel. You Program is a go-to source for many handcrafters loading ammunition for precision results, I feel that if people feel convicted to give funding support to your work is up to them. I know that you have re-entered the workforce and have started a new career, and you won't have the time available as you used to have as a full-time RUclipsr. That still does not degrade your quality programming. Your work is greatly appreciated, Not just at an entry level, However at a competitor level as you take the time to try experiments with new powders and loading components. I for one believe I get more than I give to your channel and you should have a donation hat set up at the door. Dave.

      Thanks, brother. I do have my paypal link and I'll be putting it in the description of all my videos. Thanks for all your support. Once I get settled in at work and I figure out what the pace of videos is going to look like, I might reconsider Patreon. We'll see where it goes. For the time being, I feel a lot more comfortable without the added pressure of "paying customers" expecting videos. If I feel like going fishing next weekend instead of making a video, I'd rather do it guilt free! haha Thanks again, brother.

    My first AR-10 6.5 Creedmoor all AERO Precision parts (20" barrel). My second range session went, good after installing Odin Works adjustable gas block...standard gas block would work with factory ammo...off and on with hand loads. The range session ammo: Hornady's American Gunner 140 grains, Hornady's 140 grains Match and SIG SAUER Elite Performance Ammunition 140 grains. Once I had made adjustments to the gas block the gun ran perfectly until I got to Hornady's Match ammo muzzle velocity 2710 fps, the other boxes were both 2690 fps; a perfect run! The combined accuracy of three boxes 685". The Summer months here in Alaska, you're swatting mosquitos, so, it is almost impossible to shoot! Fall and Spring are the best times to shoot.

    Best thorough, technical and relevant 308/6.5 videos ever. Cant wait to watch them all man. Keep up the good work! I've basically got the same set up, but a FailZero bolt and BCA barrel and i'm having pierced primers and really bad cratering and swipes. I'm getting in a 20" Ballistic Advantage Premium bull barrel and a Superlative Arms gas block and some KAK tungsten weights. Hopefully this improves my brass condition or I'll have to spend the dough on a JP HP bolt.

  • @Painterrap
    @Painterrap 6 лет назад +2

    6.5 Creedmoor was built from the ground up to have an extremely low Ballistic Coefficient and be inherently accurate. The design of 6.5 Creedmoor was tailored to the precision shooter and every inch of it's features were meticulously thought out with long range precision in mind. The commercial .308 round was introduced in 1952 and was subsequently adopted 2 years later by Nato in the slightly higher pressure (7.62X51) format. The 308 is a jack of all trades kind of round and really wasn't built to sustain amazing long range accuracy but rather be adequate for multiple scenarios ranging from close to mid range. In conclusion the 308 is just not as accurate as the 6.5 and some of that is because it's old technology but mostly because it wasn't really designed as a precision round.

    • @Mike-xi4zt
      @Mike-xi4zt Год назад

      @Painterrap the 6.5 creedmoor is a necked down 30 TC. The 30 TC was a lower pressure cartridge to get close to 308 win velocity at lower pressure so that Thompson center would not stretch their frames. The 30 TC is basically a copy of the lower pressure 300 Savage which has been around for a hundred years. The 250 Savage the 22 250 300 Savage are all in the same ballpark of case size and can be used to form each other from the same cartridge. The 6.5 creedmoor is not designed from the ground up it is 6.5 version of a 300 Savage. And is a neck down version of the 30 TC which is a plagiarized 300 Savage. Hornady has a habit of randomly barely changing a cartridge just enough to call it their own cartridge and then say they designed it from the ground up. The 6mm Arc is a copy of the 6mm AR which is a neck down 6.5 Grendel designed by people not from Hornady. But you probably believe Hornady designed the 6mm Arc from the ground up when they didn't at all they plagiarized it from someone else. The 6mm PPC is what started the 6mm ar and the 6mm Arc. Target shooters like the 6.5 creedmoor compared to a 308 Winchester because it's less recoil. You can shoot high BC bullets in 30 caliber it just takes a heavier bullet than it does in 264 ,which means more recoil. A 308 is fully capable of the same accuracy as a 6.5 creedmoor. To say Hornady came up with some miracle fairy tale magic fairy dust cartridge is just a religious belief.

    6.5 Creedmoor was engineered by Hornady to be accurate. They messed with the neck angles, the throat, all sorts of stuff to make it easy to get a gun that shoots well.
    People have learned a lot in the 70 years since 308 was designed.

    I have the exact same setup, and with factory 130 gr Federal berger match I cant even get the rifle to cycle, and it chews the brass up like a dog on a new shoe. The 140 and 143 gr factory hornady work better and do cycle with the gas block fully open, but the swipe is still on the brass very badly. Along with some nasty extractor marks. So I dumped the carbine length buffer spring and standard .308 buffer and decided to go to a rifle length buffer tube and a Tubbs flat wire spring and a rifle buffer with 2 extra tungsten weights to get me at about 7.4 oz all to increase the time that the bolt stays locked. It worked but I could never get enough gas to get it to lock open on the last round, but it would chamber the next round. Then I drilled my gas port open an extra .01 thou to .078 and boom. Purrrs like a kitty. And the brass deformation dropped significantly. My next step is hand loading with small primer brass.
    With all the extra weight behind the bolt it just barely cycles. So when my SRD762QD gets out of prison i will have some more gas to deal with, so I can see how well the gas bleed off works.

I tried all the rifle to carbine buffer springs and now just drilled out to .76 and hoping it starts to cycle. I'm shooting 3103 41.5gn 155gn Hornady fmjbts. A good load! But nada. Head space is a-ok. Cases are dirty and unless not ejected ready to reload. Any thoughts.

    JRB, use 4451 and 4350 in 308 for 175 gr projectiles and up. Your accuracy will improve and you will stop tearing up your brass. Use RL15 for everything under 175 grain projectiles for better accuracy and to stop tearing up your brass.

    Maybe you’ve already covered primer cratering and I missed it? But what is the big deal with a crater in your primer that’s going to be tossed? Great video tho! I hope to have some luck reloading for my .308 Ar10. Thanks!

    • @JohnnysReloadingBench
      @JohnnysReloadingBench  6 лет назад +4

      The next step after cratering is a pierced primer. Pierced primers can mean gas hitting your boltface and inside your bolt, and you can end up with chunks of primer inside your bolt. It's bad news. Cratering is usually a sign of over-pressure in most cartridges.
      In the specific instance of 6.5 Creedmoor, Small Primers and my TC Compass, we've found that cratering happens even with light loads. It looks like the situation will be similar with our Aero Precision bolt in this gun.
      In the compass, we've found that ejector smears on the case head is the best warning sign of high pressure.
      Every gun is different and it's important to learn how to read pressure signs on brass on a gun-by-gun basis. Some mark up the case head, some flatten primers, and some crater primers. It's not an exact science. Pay attention to the spent brass of the factory ammo you shoot. That should give you a good indication of what a hot load should look like (most factory ammo is reasonably hot). If factory ammo doesn't crater or flatten primers, your handloads shouldn't either. Good luck.

    Check the 308 cartridge base diameters just forward of the rim and compare to the chamber diameter at the same point. Chamber should not be over .470". I think you will find the cartridge base diameter will be somewhere like .465" This allows the back of the cartridge to fall downward as compared to the shoulder and miss aligns the bullet with the throat. Compare the same measurement on the 6.5 and see if the diameter differences are tighter or not. I do not have either cartridges, but with my 30-06, HXP cartridges measure .470" and REM cartridges measure .465". The HXP always out shoot the REM by a long way.
    I find current cartridge manufacturers make the head diameter well under size so the cartridges they make will fit in any rifle. Years ago when re-barreling M14s we found that the barrels made from end of life reamers were more accurate then when the reamer was new. All the end of life reamer chambers were just a little tighter in all dimensions. This held the cartridge in tighter alignment axially. You can usually detect non-uniform case expansion just ahead of the case head if the case head is too much under size. This indicates the case was not centered at the rear of the chamber.

    • @JohnnysReloadingBench
      @JohnnysReloadingBench  6 лет назад +2

      I'll check this! Thanks for the tip.

    • @ewathoughts8476
      @ewathoughts8476 6 лет назад

      It is best to measure with new cases so you are not fooled by hot loads that have expanded the head already. A lot of current production brass is way too soft to start with. Too much recycled materials in brass now a days. I think Lapua still uses virgin brass, but I do not have any to measure.

    • @yolo-qr2fq
      @yolo-qr2fq 6 лет назад

      Charles Sears so the diameter of the base of factory ammo can be to small to center the whole round so it throws off accuracy.

    • @ewathoughts8476
      @ewathoughts8476 6 лет назад

      That has been my experience. The rimless cartridge is supported for centering at two points. One is the shoulder, and the other is a the head of the case. even very tight headspace (tight bold closure) will not always insure that the case base is not offset to some point of the clock. Semi Autos are most affected due to the violence of chambering and other factors. Axial concentricity is off. Sometimes extractors will press the case base off center as well, so the bullet is forced towards the opposite side of the neck.

      Charles Sears very interesting. I mean it makes sense but I learned something new so thanks.

    Have very similar setup and glad to see you are getting similar results. Will be trying out some 130 gr SMK and 140 gr Barnes match burner with prolly H4350, IMR4350, and Superformance which the 6.5 seems to like!

    In 308. Shoot Varget powder and find a load with it. I've had crappy results with every other powder I e tried. But 45 grains of varget with a 175 grain is lights out in every bolt action 308 I've owned.

    Do you think you will ever get the same accuracy while running unsuppressed? Great results first time out and excited to see more.

    • @JohnnysReloadingBench
      @JohnnysReloadingBench  6 лет назад +2

      I meant to talk about that a little. I'm thinking that a muzzle device (brake, compensator, flash hider, etc) of similar weight should give the same accuracy improvement. I might do some testing in the future, but the only brake I've got right now is a SilencerCo that is pretty light.

    I could never figure out fully your curse with the 308 lol. I reload for my AR-10 all the time. Brass looks good. But heck. I don't load them as hot as you. So I bet that is the difference.

    I dig your work. However, your videos have convinced me that i don't want to use an adjustable gas block. I want my rifle to operate every time I pull the trigger that the next round will cycle

      It's a Harrell's: www.harrellsprec.com/
      I made the videos private. I did a poor job of explaining the tests, I think, and there were some confused comments. I don't want people to expect a "muzzle brake shootout" and that seems to be what people fixated on. It's a barrel tuning & harmonics test only, and various brakes were the easiest way to get a variety of different weight devices. I got 3 of the brakes in the mail today and expect a bunch more...I will probably do another video tomorrow talking about them and re-framing the expectations of the test.

      Sounds good. Yeah, I am really interested how your "barrel tuners" work. :) Browning made one a long time ago called the Boss. www.browning.com/support/frequently-asked-questions/boss-system.html Rimfire guys have been using them forever. Here is a great read on how one specific barrel tuner performed. www.ingunowners.com/forums/general-firearms-discussion/330619-my-introduction-barrel-tuners-do-they-work.html

    Johnny, I know it's been 3 years since you filmed this but di you notice if the rounds were feeding properly and damaging the tip when chambered?
    I have a 6 cm w/ Odin barrel & a 6.5 w/Lilja barrel both are AP builds. Each time I feed a bullet the tip of the bullet strikes just below the barrel opening and then slides up.
    Damages the bullet tips. I 've tried ACS, PMAG and Lancer mags. Hornady 143 ELD & Nosler 140 gr HPBT bullets that I've set deeper into the case.

    Hey Johnny, tough luck on that camera. Hey just wanted to run ut by you, speer has some 120 and 140 grain 6.5 creedmoor hunting loads. Both are working great in my aero just thought it could be a good hunting load to try and it's new on the market (somewhat lol)

    Holy crap bro...sorry about the camera.
    I have the same problem with my CMMG .22 conversion kit.
    ...it will double & triple tap on occasion using the .22 LR 710 fps bullets......fortunately it doesn't P.O.I. shift as much as the 6.5 CM.

    Awe man bum deal with the camera! I think I’ve heard you were a former marine? Or military, I think it’s really interesting you have adopted a trigger pull like you’ve been using. But whatever works and you’ve definitely shot some excellent groups through many videos. Great video, that rifle definitely shoots well. I would like to see some Hornady 140 match complete ammo shot through it. That stuff usually shoots excellent

    What causes the double tap? is it not following through with the trigger finger or just trying to baby the trigger?

    • @JohnnysReloadingBench
      @JohnnysReloadingBench  4 года назад

      Yup, it's essentially not following through with the trigger finger. I try and put the absolute minimum amount of pressure on the trigger to get it to go off, and it gets me into trouble sometimes. Another thing that makes it happen is not having sufficient pressure into your shoulder. It's the combination of light trigger finger and the gun moving a lot due to minimum shoulder contact that causes it.
      Too much shoulder pressure or an aggressive trigger pull make it extremely difficult to hold tight groups, so it's a balancing act.

    Is the suppressor changing the barrel harmonics for the load you're firing? Normally the suppressor might shift the POI and change the MV, but I wouldn't think it would make the rifle more precise.

      As others have said, it is a JP bore guide. A viewer sent it to me and I forgot to show it off on camera! It's a work of art. Bore guides are important to keep your cleaning rod centered and avoid it dragging across the rifling at the throat. Treat yourself to a nice bore guide and you'll wonder how you ever lived without them! The JP guides are priced decent but there are a few cheaper options out there. Avoid the universal ones if you can...they fit sloppy sometimes. jprifles.com/1.5.1.2_maint.php
