So Kirk Whalum use a P. Mauriat now? I remember he used to use a JK. I thought that saxophone masters are very cautious about selecting their equipments. Does this mean Kirk thinks that a newly built P. Mauriat is better than an aged JK, or Kirk tries to develop a new stype of his music, or it is just about money? This new horn does not sound as good as JK to me.
If it sounds good to Kirk Whalum, then it sounds good anyhow. I guess Mr. Whalum plays them now because he feels that it's the saxophone voice that he hears and feel. I don't think someone like Kirk will play a horn just because of monetary reasons (he's got no reason to, anyway). The sound comes from Mr. Whalum, the horn is just an extension of the sound he hears in himself. Yes, I think he is selective with his equipment. Otherwise he wouldn't shift from his JK to this P. Mauriat. And it's not any model of PM, it's a specific one that he likes (obviously).

Parker recorded with a plastic horn! The great players can make trash CANS SOUND GOOD.
