    One of the great things about Rick‘s books has and always will be the fact that the heroes are minorities. Sure in Percy Jackson and the Olympians they were mostly all white and straight but the point was that the demigods were dyslexic and had adhd. That was their representation. Then the Kane‘s added Carter as a protagonist and his skin colour becomes a topic quite often. Heroes of Olympus adds Canadian/Chinese, Latino/Latina, Cherokee characters etc. It just gets better really. Magnus added Gender Fluidity, a deaf Elf and a Muslim girl. Rick has always been about the minorities being heroes and this never changed and I sure hope it never will

    "The Norse had nothing to do with Islam" Yeah and they probably didnt have anything to do with television but we still have Thor out here talking about watching his favorite shows using his hammer. Because it's about mixing the mythology with modern day America. And modern day America includes a portion of the population being Muslim. So why is "Thor watches Breaking Bad" fine and dandy with them but "Some people happen to be Muslim" is dragging in something unrelated

      Actually, I was surprised to learn that a real Muslim named Ahmad ibn Fadlan (the same as Samira’s last name) actually did travel north and hang out with the Rus (aka, a Nordic people), and we know this because he wrote it all down. Like there are gay people. That is how the world is and it's not even something that's WRONG with the world. But there are SO many people that think it is - such is ALSO just how the world is. So long as there are people with this view, there will also be people unable to read these books or not approving of these books. I really think that's a bigger problem than "Oh my favorite book doesn't have any gay character what ever am I going to do????"

    • @isobelmiller7464
      @isobelmiller7464 Месяц назад

      @@samstromberg5593 I have to disagree. Having biases and prejudices is part of human nature, but that doesn't mean it's okay or should be dismissed as "just how the world is". That kind of mentality creates marginalization, stigmatization, poor mental health, and other problems.
      We humans are flawed, and we should learn to recognize our flaws and work to better ourselves. I don't think people should be shamed or ostracized for having prejudices, but they should be encouraged to unlearn that mentality, not validated in having them. Even if it's for religious or cultural reasons, religious and cultural beliefs and customs are made by flawed humans, often from older times, and can be damaging.
      Also, I do NOT think catering to people's biases that, like I said, they should work to overcome, is more important than giving marginalized groups representation. I'm not saying every piece of media needs LGBTQ+ representation or that any piece is of lower quality for not having it. I certainly don't think media should be required to include it, as that would only lead to more low-quality representation.
      However, I do believe that kind of representation should exist somewhere and that people should be allowed to create it if they desire. Representation helps people feel seen, which is especially important when the world around them pretends they don't exist, and introduces people who aren't part of those groups to ways of living outside what they're used to.

    • @samstromberg5593
      @samstromberg5593 Месяц назад

      @@isobelmiller7464 Okay so first I want to touch on "that kind of mentality creates ... poor mental health". I HEAVILY disagree on this one. I think accepting the world as it is and trying to find the limited light contained is what leads to good mental health. The people you see crying about how they're such victims are usually the ones with poor mental health while the people who accept it and work in spite of it are usually much more successful and much happier (even if it is in the form of delayed gratification). I believe this is the biggest reason for the steep decline in mental health we've seen in recent decades - I'm pretty confident we don't actually have it worse than the Dark Ages (when, if you were born into servitude, there was virtually no chance to escape that life). But they accepted it as life and allowed themselves to have happy moments with their loved ones (probably - I wasn't there, but their su__ide rate was much lower than ours is so clearly their mental health was better). I really think people were happier overall when we were just told to suck it up.
      Okay, second paragraph I like a lot more. I would like to add the disclaimer that getting people to move beyond an ideology (cultural or religious beliefs) is virtually impossible and I think it's much smarter to pick the battles there's a chance of winning. If you have a reason to disagree with this, though, I would love to hear it. I'd bet we can find common ground on this topic, if nothing else
      I really am torn on how I feel about paragraph 3. First off, the rainbow mafia is not a marginalized group. The truth is that they are peripheral (in the sense that they are the exception rather than the rule - which is why there's an acronym for it) but are not treated as such. I'm sure you've heard this argument before but if they have a flag. And I do not. That's flown at the White House. Of what is arguably the most influential country in the world. They are not marginalized. And nobody (and certainly not the whole world around them) is pretending that they don't exist. Some people don't like them but many people do and everybody acknowledges their existence, if not their validity.
      As far as media not being lower quality for including it ... I hesitantly agree. First of all, that's kind of my point; it doesn't really matter if it's lower quality or not, many people perceive it as such. Let's take Lightyear - it wasn't a cinematic masterpiece but let's say it was. They included a lesbian couple that was only onscreen for a few minutes and had zero significance on the overall plot. But because of it, the movie was banned in many countries. Are you seriously going to tell me that you genuinely believe that 2 minute "representation" (which I'll get to in a minute) is more important than entire countries being allowed (legally or just subconsciously*) to enjoy a cinematic masterpiece?
      *For many people, that clip genuinely did detract from the enjoyment of the movie, myself included. As a general rule, I believe PDA should be kept out of films (not for any objective reason but just because I don't enjoy it) but I think a lot more people agree with me on this one because it wasn't straight. This is kind of a weird way to phrase this but when there's too much PDA in a movie, because it's something I don't like, I'm subconsciously telling myself that I'm not allowed to enjoy it? I really don't think that gets my point across very well but just can't find any way to clean it up.
      And then my point about representation. Any time I hear that word I just cry inside. What does it even mean? "Helps people feel seen" - why does that matter? I'm allowed to be straight because I'm straight, not because society told me it was acceptable or because my favorite character is. Like sure Hiccup (probably isn't my FAVORITE character but it's really hard to choose a first and he's a lot more well known than a lot of the others I love) is straight yeah but if he wasn't I still would be. And I would still love him. And my straightness would still be valid. Or do you disagree? So I genuinely cannot figure out why everyone is so obsessed with representation.
      That wasn't meant to be such an essay and a half I feel strongly about this

    I think the Magnus Chase series unironically has my favorite representation in media. Like obviously I like Blitzstone, but I mean the CANON rep. (Rant incoming)
    Homelessness, being treated as less than a person because you're on the streets, the mental war that comes with having a disability, being outcasted because of a disability/treated as less than because of having a disability, Being Muslim and their practices, being treated like a terrorist because of your religion and having to actively prove yourself every day, being over pressured, feeling "wrong" and "different" because of your interests, feeling like a failure as a person because you're not like everyone else, dealing with the loss of a parent, (arguably) having a narcissistic/toxic parent, having to face your phobias, (arguably) PTSD, the way manipulation can break you, etc. And i haven't even gotten to the second book yet. I'm genderfluid myself, and there is SO much I could say about the way they captured Alex and the way they showed Magnus coming to terms with how he might be queer. And, again, this is just the main cast. There's still the side characters!

    I'll admit, Im not on the left, but who the fuck cares about Alex being Genderfluid? Seriously? I was a kid when I read these books, I didn't even know that genderfluid was a real thing. I just thought it meant that they changed sex literally, (which is what Alex and Loki literally do) but now I know genderfluid people do exist, they just change gender, not sex. Honestly, I could not care less, Alex is my favourite character in the entire series, and is one of the best written GF characters in fiction. And having read the comments on this video, Alex has helped a ton of people accept themselves! The hate for Alex is unjust and blatantly trannsphobic in this regard.
    The hate for Sam is also ridiculous. Shes an amazing character, I don't have as much to say about this as there is nothing to say. There is nothing wrong with muslims. They're among the three biggest religions in the world. 99% of the muslims I have met are good characters.
    Homophobia is utterly stupid and I hate homophobes. Nothing more to say.
    Overall, people get angry at trans people because they think they could be grapists, perverts, pdf files. People have no right to be mad at Alex. They have been written as a good character, and thats where you know the people hating on them are actually just transphobic, because they cannot except ANY trans characters. Thats where they are blatantly bad people. Christians get mad at muslims when reading a fucking NORSE MYTHOLOGY BOOK. Homophobia of ONE SCENE. Thats ridiculous. Yeah, the bad reviews on this book are mainly just cunts being horrible people.

    As a Muslim myself, I would like to say that I did NOT like Samirah's character at all AT FIRST. It felt like Rick had bitten off more than be could chew. Her explanation of why she wore hijab was horrid, and I didn't understand why she was still Muslim when she knew that pagan deities existed. She used terms like "mosque" instead of Masjid and "peace be upon him" instead of the Arabic meaning, "sallalahu alayhi wa sallam" both words that we never use amongst ourselves, but non-Muslims do. (Most consider "mosque" an offensive term, actually, since its derived from the word "mosquito") Plus, she felt like a walking, talking Arab stereotype.
    But in the SECOND book... It was like a switch flipped. It was as if Rick heard all of my criticisms of her and just rewrote her character based off that. Unlike in the first book, I could TELL that Rick did his research on Islam (even though he made Sam pray like a man 💀- it's the thought that counts). I loved her explanation for why she still believed in Allah. I loved his description of the calm feeling you get when you pray, and of course, that post-fast bliss. I loved how, instead of making fasting an obstacle for her, he instead used it to show just how strong she really was. Rick *actually* managed to add a wonderful, surprisingly realistic hijabi protagonist in a world centered around pagan deities. I went from hating her, to genuinely thinking that she is one of the best Muslim rep that I've come across.

    I just read the series, and it’s so good! About to read The Kane Chronicles and my two favorite characters are Magnus and Alex. Btw, great video! This people making these reviews are idiots.

      That is rude. Some people actually follow their religion. I read Percy Jackson and that was fine the I read the Heroes of Of Olympus that was pushing the limit because they were highlighting IT then I read Magnus Chase hoping it was better
      but unfortunately not. I’m Christian so this is not apart of my religion. And you’re basically calling me an idiot and you don’t even know me I have friends that are apart of the lgbtq community but I just don’t support that because of my religion. And you’re basically calling out people like Samira who have their own religion so you just called some Muslim and Islamic and Christian and Catholic people who you don’t even know idiot’s . I bet you know some people who don’t believe in that type of stuff too. My Muslim friend also does not believe in that kind of stuff either but she is not an idiot because she just doesn’t believe it but is not mean to anyone or anything. It’s so sad 😞 what the world is coming to calling people idiots.😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞

    WHAT DO YOU MEAN ALEX HAS NO PERSONALITY? SHES LITRALLY THE MOST EXPRESSIVE AND MEMORABLR CHARACTORS IN THE STORY?

  • @renarddubois940

    what bothers me with the fact that she's muslim is that she's specifically muslim instead of being an arabic believer of THE God who also apparently exist in this universe (just like it would bother me if an angel is specifically christian rather than a servant of this absolute being that would exist in this setting)..
    Considering what and who she is, she should know better what kind of Being Allah is, she should have some insight that religious authorities don't have, she should have more insight than the ppl that wrote the Quran or the bible or whatever abrahamic religious book..
    I don't think any of these character can be christian or jew or muslim without it being problematic, they should know better..

    Unpopular Opinion: Samirah is better than Alex and the best character in the series.
    Also, people need to stop calling her Sam. It takes away the culture and meaning.

      She is referred to as Sam more often in the books likely due to the fact that it’s shorter. That’s like saying people should stop calling Perseus, Percy

    I'm from a country where it isn't hard to hear people say things like gay people should just die or that they aren't human beings it is ingrained into our brains from childhood so showing support to LGBT is a big no no and I don't think that will change any time soon. All my family members make homophobic statements on a daily basis and I'm sick of it but there isn't anything I can do about it
