I am only on 8 times from 1974-2014... They started 1962 and Francis now just doing chat and playing. RIP Rick and Alan. They also did the record number of "Top of the Pops" appearances with over 60!

Status Quo have been around since the 60's hailing from the UK... They scored more UK hit singles than The Rolling Stones but for some reason, Status Quo never broke big outside of Europe... they got massive in Germany. The original band was dubbed 'The Frantic Four' because of their frantic 'boogie rock' sound that they maintained for decades. The origin of Status Quo was in the 60's when a teenage Francis Rossi (vocals/ lead guitar) formed a band The Spectres... and met Rick Parfitt (vocals/ rhythm guitar) ... The duo became close friends when Parfitt joined the band and changed the name to Status Quo by the mid-60's and scored a psychedelic hit in 1968 - 'Pictures of Matchstick Men'... Quo also included Alan Lancaster (bass) and John Coghlan (drums) ... They wanted a different sound and an American band - The Doors, made a huge impression w/ their song 'Roadhouse blues' in 1970... Status Quo started playing that style of boogie rock and would 'headbang' at concerts... In 1972, they scored another hit - 'Paper plane' from their 5th album 'Piledriver'... More hit singles came in the 70's as Status Quo became commercially successful and a huge draw on tour - 'Down down'... 'Roll over lay down' ... "Rockin' all over the world" (John Fogerty cover) ... 'Caroline' ... 'Rain' ... 'Whatever you want'... etc. In 1977, Andy Bown (keyboards) began touring w/ Status Quo (he had played on their records since 1973)... Rossi and Parfitt sang most of the hits by Status Quo... But by the early 80's, tensions between Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster led to Status Quo being dissolved after a 1984 'farewell tour' (Drummer John Coghlan had quit in 1981) but the band did reunite to play the Live Aid 1985 charity concert and got a huge response. After Live Aid, Rick Parfitt urged Francis Rossi to reconsider reforming Status Quo... Rossi agreed only if Alan Lancaster was fired. Parfitt brought in John 'Rhino' Edwards (bass) and Jeff Rich (drums) w/ Andy Bown (keyboards) returning and Status Quo was reborn, scoring a hit album in 1986 - 'In the army now'... They persisted in recording and touring successfully for the next few decades (Drummer Jeff Rich left the band in 2000) Their later hits included - "In the army now" ... 'Red sky' ... "Ain't complaining" ... 'Rolling home' ... "You'll come round" ... etc. The original 'Frantic Four' Status Quo (Rossi/ Parfitt/ Lancaster/ Coghlan) did reunite to play a handful of shows in 2013 & 2014. Tragically, guitarist/ vocalist Rick Parfitt struggled w/ alcoholism and suffered from health issues for years... a heart attack in 1997 that required a bypass surgery... In 2016, he was hospitalized in Turkey after collapsing following a show... Rick Parfitt was taken off the road and he passed away in late 2016 at age 68 (R.I.P.)... His spot in Status Quo was filled by guitarist Richie Malone, who had been personally coached by Parfitt. Former bassist Alan Lancaster passed away in 2021. Francis Rossi is now the only original member of Status Quo.

I was 14 when this came out and you are right about “the feel” of the music being its strength. Nice to see young people discovering 70s rock for the first time. ‘Down Down’ is superlative but check out Quo’s ‘Whatever You Want’ - it will take you to the same place.

Status Quo are considered part of the British institution having had an endless stream of singles from the late 60's all the way up to the 00's! They've been going since 1962, and had their first chart success, albeit as a, 'pop group', in 1968, with, 'Pictures of Matchstick Men.' They continued with their success for another year or so, doing as they were told by the record producers in order to become famous, releasing, 'Ice in the Sun.' After that, they felt what they were told to play/record didn't really align with their own preferences and so, instead started playing their own boogie/blues influenced style of music. They also played down their image, appearing in t-shirts and jeans and letting their hair grow long. Gone was the, 'pop group', and by 1970, they'd reinvented themselves. They had their next success a couple of years later when changing record labels, with, 'Paper Plane', in 1972. This immediately got them back into the charts and they stayed there for the best part of a decade and a half, with most of their singles reaching the top 10. 'Down Down', from 1975, was their only no.1 in the UK. They came pretty close on a couple more occasions, having a few reach the no.2 position, also. The 90's were their wilderness years, it has to be said, but then did have a slight revival in the 2000's, but only just. They toured relentlessly and it's estimated that they spent a total of about 7 solid years doing so throughout their career. A fantastic live band who honed their craft on the road. The Quo! One of the greatest bands ever to come out of the UK, more hits than a secondhand darts board! Try Long Legged Linda, not many people know this one and its Genius! The graphics were sick inducing but produces had just got this 'feature' and used it to death.
This was my dad's favourite band I like some of their songs a bit hit and miss for me personally but this was a very popular band at their heights I'd say in the 80s even though they'd been going since the 70s..
Music videos basically started with Queen and Bohemian Rhapsody. Performance were often recorded and sometmes you'll see clips from TV programmes, etc. Before that not all bands were filmed.
The first recognised music video was made by Queen in 1975, so this is really a recording of a TV appearance although I'm unsure which show it is. By the way, Status Quo is a British band and their name is always pronounced the English way Stay tus kwo, you got the Quo part right but it's never Star Tus.
Video clips have been around since the 50's at least. Maybe even earlier but the 60's and 70's was when music really took off thanks to television, radio and air travel becoming more affordable to the masses, hence artists touring overseas etc.
Of course it wasn't the end of the song - Quo songs famously never end 😄 (See if you can find the fab spoof parody "Boring Song" by Status Quid - bound to be somewhere on RUclips.)
This was and is party music, good time music. Quo do the simple things great and thats's not easy cause you gotta have great songs and they do. The term Videos didn't exist at the time 1974 if i,m correct. It is an old term from about 1930 but i've never heard the term before MTV came . They just filmed them. I never saw this before RUclips came on. It was not so affordable at the time. Back in 1974 most of us just listen to music. If you wanted to see them you had to go to conserts. I don't think they could play wireless 1974 so i guess this is a playback video film with innovative spinning effect that is just annoying today. Great band

Like Status Quo - always have done. Love the song! Hate the cameraman! Never can watch this clip. He probably thought it was a neat effect, making the camera do cartwheels like that. Just because you can do it, doesn't mean you should!
Surely the lyrics reference Milton while providing a theological commentary. It is better to reign in Hell than to serve in Heaven. If there is a philosophical message it is that if the false dichotomy of the evangelicals view of the afterlife should actually prove to be true, there is going to be quite a party going on in the bowels of hell. The most interesting people will be there. This surely has to be what the song is about rather than just a trite moan about a failed relationship.
