  • I took my first flight of 2022 on Saturday the 29th of January 2022 as Storm Malik swept across the UK creating even more damage and disruption.
Flying with ‪@jet2com‬ on their Boeing 757-200 G-LSAK, I was very excited as this was my first time ever flying onboard the 'flying pencil'.
The cabin crew were super friendly and clearly pleased to be back in the air with fare-paying passengers again.
It was a lovely time to fly as we finally put the last of these past 2 years behind us and move on back to normality! (Yes I said it)
Here are some time stamps you might find helpful when navigating through this lengthy video.
    00:03 Manchester Terminal 2
    00:09 Boarding G-LSAK
    00:14 Pushback (funny captain announcement)

27:44 Engine Shutdown (Icelandair Boeing 737 MAX)
    28:06 Cockpit pics
    28:18 Goodbye G-LSAK
    28:34 Welcome to Tenerife
A MASSIVE thankyou to ‪@AviationUpclose‬ for filming my flight departing runway 23R at Manchester Airport.
He was also filming some of the brilliant movements as the Storm causes issues for arriving and departing aircraft at Manchester Airport.

Due to fly to Fuerventra next month, what was it like going through passport control in Tenifere, with the UK no longer in the EU?
    Can't wait

    • @JonathanWinton123

Fantastic! It is so easy to get through passport control. I found in Tenerife the queue for Non-EU was moving faster than the queue for all those arriving from the EU.
ALl you need to remember is the passenger locator form & you will be fine.
I hope you have a great time 😀👍

Did you know that pilots are only allowed 2 go arounds? They can't make a third attempt unless there's an emergency and have to divert, often to the relief of many passengers. But although you might think the plane is shaking itself apart, they are actually built to take that and much much more.
That's why the crash of the Boeing 737-800 China Eastern Flight MU5735 seems so shocking, especially given the video clip of the actual nose diving. Planes simply do not fall out of the sky like that, unless forced into such an unstable flight position by something or someone.
I don't like flying with Boeing and you may have heard the old rhyme "If it's a Boeing I'm not going!"
When booking a flight nowadays, I always check out the type of aircraft on the sector. I try to avoid Boeing wherever possible and wouldn't even consider boarding a 737-Max. They're just unsafe in my view and I'm convinced that while Boeing have addressed some of the issues with their flight control software, it still has a bug which could make the plane unstable.
Looking at the China Eastern crash, as I say, planes simply don't fall out of the sky like that.
Some have suggested it was brought down by a bomb or missile, but that seems highly unlikely, as the aircraft appears intact as it falls to Earth with no trailing debris. There was just a hint of a puff of smoke from the aircraft seconds before impact, but that could simply have been one of the engines spooling back.
Others have suggested it was brought down by the Pilot in what's known as a "Pilot aircraft suicide." It's happened before and will sadly happen again, especially given the stress Pilots endure in the modern aviation world.
But, that too seems unlikely, especially as China Eastern have grounded their entire fleet of 737s, a massive decision, with huge financial and operational implications, which would indicate there's a problem with this variant of the 737, not with the Pilot. If other airlines around the world start doing the same, then we can say with almost certainty there's a problem with the aircraft type.
But, frighteningly, Boeing will likely already know the basic cause of the crash, as I don't if you're aware, but they monitor every single one of their planes and it's behaviour in real time via satellite communications from a global tracking centre, based I think in Seattle.
The engines are also similarly monitored in real time, by Rolls Royce or General Electric, via a multitude of sensor arrays mounted in the engines themselves, which report back at least once per minute, to the manufacturers monitoring centre.
So, they too will likely know how the engines on this plane performed and whether there is any wider cause for concern that might see the grounding of planes flying with that particular engine model.
The fact that no such announcements have been made to date, leads me to think there's a problem with either the airframe of the plane, or the flight control software.
So, whilst crash scene investigators will go through the motions of locating the flight data and voice recorders, the infamous black box (which are actually bright orange) the sad truth is these will probably only confirm what the plane and engine manufacturers already know, or at the very least highly suspect.
Strangely and coincidentally enough, the last time I flew Boeing was an Air France 777-300 from Charles De Gaulle Paris, to the same Chinese airport of Guanghzoo, where we tried landing in a violent electrical storm. Two missed approaches, and a further go around with loss of some electrical power (cabin went totally dark which triggered mass screaming) saw us flying onto Hong Kong, where we sat on the tarmac for 3 hrs waiting for the storm to pass, followed by a safe landing back on the mainland.
My connection was a China Eastern 737 onto Siem Reap Cambodia.
I had shivers when I heard about this crash, as it kinda brings it home to you when you've flown the same route yourself on the same airline and aircraft type.
I just hope the truth comes out, not least because the aviation world will need to know if there's potential cause to ground certain aircraft types.
Boeing are very good at the avoidance game. Look at the disappearance of the Malaysian Airlines Flight M751, which is yet to be found.
I'm convinced Boeing know far more about that flight than they've ever made public.
Then the crash of successive 737 Max aircraft, where Boeing initially denied all knowledge of a problem with the plane's control software. Only when the second aircraft of the same type ploughed into the ground, were they forced to come clean and ground every 737 Max due to software issues.
And people ask me why I don't like flying...
It's not that I dislike flying, quite the opposite in fact and I travel frequently, it's just Boeing that I worry about and I'm much happier taking a flight on an Airbus.
Unfortunately though, no matter how hard I try to completely avoid flying Boeing, it's virtually impossible.
I like to fly long haul and some countries are only served by certain airlines, who in turn only operate one make and variant of aircraft on a particular route.
So, if I want to visit South America, many airlines only operate Boeing, either the 777 variant or the newer Dreamliner 787 (which too has experienced issues requiring a recall) so I either have to plan circuitous routes to get to my desired destination, with a financial penalty or I bite the bullet and fly Boeing, apart from the 737-Max which remains a non starter for me.
So, maybe I should change the rhyme to "If it's a Boeing, I'd rather not be going."
      RIP China Eastern Flight MU5735
