Can't believe you haven't seen that video. Mrs O even mentions it from time to time here on SMA channel. I believe it was on a Nissan Sentra that you have to replace the whole lower control arm instead of the ball joint. He found a ball joint somewhere and welded her to keep her from spinning.
It's made worse by the fact he can't weld for shit.

This is great. I’ve worked on mostly in Asian and European cars, and lot of times some hand made or self invented tools are best and almost free. I recently replaced front ball joints in 03 Forster. Harder part for me was removing bottom part than upper part that stuck in pinch bolt area. An attached to control arm and giving couple of strikes with 2-3 feet long 2x4 worked great for me. Love your video in real time and shows trying out different techniques when some fails. You have luxury of lift which I don’t and I’ve spent more time for set up in slope driveway than tackling hardest tast. Appreciate your time to create great memories. Thanks again.

Ive always used a slide hammer on those. Use the old castle nut and slip the hammer on. Good as done!
Very simple and effective tool. Great idea.
Have you considered putting a jack stand under the lower arm to keep it from moving when you used the slide-hammer? This will eliminate any stress on other suspension components when you apply the force.
The bottom arm isn't attached during the ball joint removal?
Hey Eric, Thanks for all the great videos! I've done a few Subie ball joints and found using a small chisel tapped in the gap on the ball joint yoke helps reduce the grip on the ball joint has in the yoke.

I just take the pinch bolt out and then use a bull pin between the lower control arm and knuckle, just under where the pinch bolt is, I hit the bull pin with a big hammer a few times and the ball joint comes right out. This method worked for me all the time.

I’ve actually attempted this with a slide hammer before. The problem is like other have stated, most of us will be on the ground so there isn’t space for a slide hammer vertically. And then if you remove the knuckle you need to find a really good way of holding it and that is also a pain. On the other hand, the other tools that you make at home require welding so that’s an issue too.

Nice job! I've been doing ALOT of things the hard way before I discovered RUclips. Just used Big Nasty the other day on those 4 tie rod ends (drag link setup) on a '04 Grand Cherokee - dropped all of 'em right out in less than 10 seconds each! Love that thing! Judging by what I can see in your videos, I think Illinois rust might be worse than New York rust, if you can believe that. I’ve heard tales of a place where cars aren’t rusty and one man can do a dozen or more alignments in a single day because nothing is frozen. I don’t know if it’s an urban legend but it sure makes for a nice dream. It’s right up there with the dream of working in an air conditioned shop. 😎

I just wish more garages in my neck of the woods was as diagnostically diligent as you. We all kno that guessing can cost more in the long run. well its geometry . Straight down is least resistance instead of angle whack. but any time you want things out from press fit its always best for 90 degress than 80 degrees. keep up the incredible new tools

I have the same slide hammer made by OTC. Great tool.
After fighting with the pinch bolt, I found it easier to take the hub off the car and work on a bench. Using the pipe style homemade puller, it still was a bear to get out. There was so much force that it stripped the all thread. But the tool lasted for two removals.
I'll take it if it includes the lift. Kind of hard to get that slide hammer in there using jack stands.

Nice. We use a metal shaft that threads on the ball joint and has a j hook at the bottom you put your big nasty on pulls it in like 5 hits works just as good and easer on the shoulders!!!

Awsome idea man. I work on alot of cars and trucks but have used the c clamp ball joint tool. Ive done those ball joints like the 1 you juat showed using a impact deep socket and wide sleeve on the bottom and 3/4 drive ratchet.

Great idea. I made one of the pipe units to use when flat backing. The slide hammer (10lb) with the vicegrip attachment over the balljoint nut works well if I am on the lift. I will have to weld a couple of nuts together and continue to pay royalty through Patreon. Thank You Eric

Great way and thanks for the tip for ppl who dont own a lift to cup it and extract it out keep up the great video and tech tips.
if you have a porta-power they have "pin pullers" that can be adapted to work, no slide banging on the poor strut. or you could always hillbilly it with a pullback cylinder if you have space above floor (on lift as you have) forgot to mention a wedge between the arm and knuckle bottom works on some also, just put the stud back in and jam in wedge
Like I said, Subaru engineers are the nerdiest nerds. Everything they do on these cars is for a reason. Like I said on his previous ball joint video, it took so long because he was doing it backwards. Yes, this job takes a few seconds when you do it correctly. They put the control arm there for you to use it as a lever. Eric, you should have an Ebay listing for these. I wouldn't mind paying $50 for it.

Very nice tool. I made a tool to stop water flow in a copper pipe then sweat on a ball valve to replace an old gate valve that always fail. Worked great. Next year the salesman that sold valve and faucet repair kits to hospitals stole my invention and sold it in their catalogue for $90.00. Ouch. Please consider having it patent ASAP. You could also extend the threads on both sides to make it last longer and use high grade steel nuts. Thanks for the great video's.

1 2 subaru baby . Do love the inverted subaru balljoints, good design unlike rear hub long bolt lol, would love a tool for 5 second fix on that lol .
What I tend do on these when splitting and BJ being replaced is soak with plenty penetrating oil .
get the cotter bolt out, spray some more oil lol .
use a thin short chisel in the knuckle joint slit to open it just a fraction, spray some more oil .
now pry lower arm off the knuckle and BJ comes with it easy .
once out whizz nut off the BJ and use a standard BJ clamp to pop it out the lower arm and job jobbed .
Your SBJPv1.0 seems work👍 only reason they tight is all corrosion causes expansion and gritty mess in the groove collects all the crud, using thin chisel in knuckle slit (with care) breaks the rust bond a bit and reduced tension so generally pop out easy .

Very cool tool ! For "production", I would start with a 2" piece of hex bar. Slap it in the drill press vice or lathe. Center up he part and drill the minor ID for the smaller bolt all the way through. Flip the work piece around and drill the minor ID for the large bolt. Tap as required !
I'd by one from you and I don't even own a Subaru, but I can show it sitting in my tool box and be like "Oh Yeah, I got Eric O's Sabaru ball joint tool!" Way cooler than Snap On stuff. 😏

Man, I should have spent yesterday watching videos and making a SBJP1.0, rather than spending hours beating on it. I eventually got it out by putting the castle nut back on through the arm, and using a pickle fork wedged against a bar taking up the rest of the space to the knuckle.
I need this tool right now. Would be handy. Gonna see if I can fabricobble one together.

i have a slide hammer with a chain that i put the bj stud through one of the links and thread the castle nut on and whammo...same concept, works great either way.

I said this before .. and I say it again, I have done those and don't have a problem. I knock a small chisel in the split after removing the bolt. The chisel spreads the gap and in some cases the ball joint falls out.
Eric if you ever have cause to do a Ford Focus suspension video on ball joints, lower control arms, bushings etc ....PLEASE DO :)
Anytime you can engineer a new tool or make a home built tool that makes life easier,then that is awesome. I would imagine eventually the threads in that nut would pull out so replacing it after every car would be a recommended thing. .33 cents per car is cheap. I watched your first video on Subaru ball joints and was thinking " screw that,I am not doing mine". I wouldnt have the room to use a puller as I dont have a lift. Fixing cars can be so fun! ( not). Great tip eather way.
