      John Carver ran into that when I was about level 7 and I don’t think I ran so fast in a game before. All I could think was “Oh fuck oh shit shit shit shit shit-“ and I proceeded to say “shit” until the music stopped.

      @@Darkstormsun9865 Same, man. Leshens aren't actually that HARD of a fight. They're challenging, but nothing of bullshit. If you can keep your footing and have patience, you could even beat the highest level leshen as a level 5. It would just take a LOT of time to fight.

      Fuzzy Dunlop man, i thought i had to start over again. coz i was underlevelled and that leshen would one shot me. I somehow kept rolling and managed to get out of that cave after a gazillion attempts

    • @fuzzydunlop7928
      @fuzzydunlop7928 7 лет назад +16

      So it didn't despawn after the first encounter? I guess I got lucky. I had no idea that they were in the game, I was playing it basically blind and that was the first time I'd been to a pitch-dark area outside of the main missions, so I was just getting used to the mechanics of the low-light and the poisonous cloud shit. I had killed everything else, but died either to the gas or an explosion or something (can't really remember), but I saw that fucking Leshen looming in the background with its arms raised. It spooked me so much, and after I loaded up it didn't appear again (which, tbh, spooked me even more.) I had my head on a swivel the rest of the way through but didn't see one again until the game progressed. Such great monster design.

    • @vishakh69666
      @vishakh69666 7 лет назад +13

      Fuzzy Dunlop The leshen was fighting some other monster when i first entered the cave. If my memory serves me correct, the other monster was a fiend and it was no match for the leshen. If i had that goddamn eye of the nehalen or something I'd have escaped through the back door which was magically sealed

I am so glad that CD Projekt created the awesome game that shines the light on the forgotten parts of our culture!

    • @davidgeorgiev5751
      @davidgeorgiev5751 5 лет назад +6

      iNezumi There is no Slavic mythology . ITS ALL FOLKLORE!! You learn it by asking your grandparents or by listening to stories . Some of those stories get written,some of them don't . I was born in the North Western part of Bulgaria and grew up with folklore stories ,some of which are not only unknown to other countries ,but they are not known to MY country . I remember when I was little,and I didn't want to go to sleep ,my grandmother would tell me a story of a creature called the Gugur . It was very similliar to death in appearances only it wore a large cloak on its back made from bear leather . This creature came before midnight at every house to take the kids that didn't want to go to sleep . I was so scared each time I went to bed that I always wore my blanket over my head . Now I find it fascinating how deep and rich ALL Slavic Folklore is . It simply shows how connected we ,the slavic people,really are . That is something the westeners never have,never had and never will be! :)

    • @johnrickard9
      @johnrickard9 5 лет назад +7

      David Georgiev Never had? Western folklore is just as rich as Slavic folklore and in some ways very similar. Much has been forgotten but it still exists.
      Your ignorance is rather laughable.

    • @christianbolze7092
      @christianbolze7092 5 лет назад +2

      The main reason for that is the strong belief in christianity. Poland is still quite catholic and due to this, "paganism" is not really well liked. Its something else to talk about folklore or traditions, but really researching the mythology of the older slavic tribes is something else entirely. The belief in specific supernatural creatures is not pagan. We still have that in our society or culture. And by the way, western culture includes slaviv culture ^^

      Pododododo Ehoh I’ve played most elder scrolls games, and Skyrim was previously my favourite game of a all time, the award was taken by The Witcher 3, trust me give it a try, it’s got so much content, great combat and the most immersive and addicting story. I was so interested and hooked that I read all 7 books shortly after completing the game.

    • @pododododoehoh3550
      @pododododoehoh3550 6 лет назад +1

      Paramyx I haven’t read the books but I don’t need to try it I completed Witcher 3 and all its dlc. It’s a great game but so is Skyrim and I don’t think either completely outdoes the other, Skyrim will never have as an enriching story as the protagonist is formed by you. Witcher on the other hand doesn’t come close to the mystical and vast feeling of an elder scrolls game and one of Witcher’s greatest strengths is also one of its greatest weaknesses you always feel like a mortal like a piece of a puzzle rather than the whole world revolving around you as it does in Skyrim, it feels more real but a lot of that’s down to how much closer to our own reality it is. So again I would say different not better.

    ok. the one thing you said about turning the clothes inside out. that really freaked me out because last autum i stumbled upon a dead fox and nothing around said it was shot but rather it was killed by something with claws it looked like. i then saw a man a bit taller then me litteraly RUNNING with his clothes turned inside out. i kinda shrugged it off and went on my mery way. i then later read that this same man was found dead allmost teared apart. i will quote the news feed in a rough translation from norwegian to english. *a man around mid 20s was today found in a forest at the outskirts of finmark teared to shreds. he was found with his clothes presumably turned inside out. no further information was given*
    so thats why this really freaked me out. because in ancient Norse mythology there is this, creature that is somewhat like a leshen. but female in looks and with hooves and a tail called Hulder. it would as far as i know from what i have read turn into a tree-looking creature with massive wooden stakes as fingers. or rather claws. it would normally be found around waterfalls and rivers in thick forests.
    so next time someone is in and around Finmark, watch where you are going...

    I'm so glad Drew started to delve into the Witcher universe! I love the games, and the books (so far, as I just started reading them). I've been a fan of the channel for a long time, and even tho I could find Witcher lore on other channels, I'd prefer to watch it right here. Thanks a million Drew! Keep em coming, please!

    When i met my first Leshen it was in a cave.
    I was level 6 and he 20....i gotta say... i almost shat myself😂😂😂
    Couldn’t even see him much since it was pretty dark in there and i only saw his siluette through Witcher senses.
    So yeah, that was fun

    They're probably the coolest monster in The Witcher 3.

    Theres one in skellige, that if you give a good offering of game you hunted to the leshen it will let you leave your hunt.
    But skimp on the offering and it'll kill you on the spot.
    It's cool, when you offer 5 wolf hearts it accepts with ravens watching and circling you.
    In the background you see the leshen.

    I wish Leshen were around in our world. Then perhaps there'd be less deforestation. I feel centuries ago Leshens were constructed, by someone - they seem so like tree-golems. Perhaps the Druids of Skellige still know the art of making the Leshen, perhaps they used it to clear out the pesky logging camp so close to their neck of the woods.

    I accidentally ran into a Leshen while exploring the woods and it killed me almost instantly. But that also broke some of the mythical elements surrounding the creature. I think you shouldn't be able to just run into these creatures at random. I think they shouldn't appear until you do something which might incite them to do so, like killing too many animals.

    The first time I encountered a Leshen walking to a tree in the cutscene of "The Woodland beast" i thought 3 things.
    1. Is he gonna do the thing where he skips a part of the Path he walks, Just to appear behind the next tree to walk towards you?
    2. *Leshen does the thing that i predicted*
    Damn predictable, but creepy. *Feels chills over his spine*
    3. I'm gonna kill that monster and finally get some money.

    There is a Leshen near Dragonslayer's grotto that can sense you and teleport in while you are searching for the armor diagrams for the Griffin School year. It did for me, standing in a cave filled with toxic gas it showed up in front of me. I wasn't able to see what level it was, only that it had one of those red skulls. Ran out for a bit, returned and the toxic gas had killed it.

    So essentially you're adding elements of Gaijin Goombah's video formula of breaking down and analyzing different creatures and aspects of games. Good on you, you've given me a reason to watch the channel besides fallout redemption(it ended I'm sad) and build videos.

    The first time playing I had no idea what Leshens were. I was exploring in a deep forest and it got dark and started to rain. I thought it was a bit creepy, but not a big deal. However, the forest seemed to go on forever, and all of a sudden I thought I saw something move. That's when I turned to see the Leshen and I was scared enough to run away lol. They are the scariest monster in the Witcher 3 I think.

    Leshiy is known as more of a trickster that, instead of out right killing you, makes you loose your way in the forest. He is also the one who was prayed to when an animal got lost in the woods. A cow for example.
    He was feared but mostly respected as a reasonable enough “lord”to deal with.

    When I was a small boy, my grandfather used to take me on ventures deep into the forests surrounding our village now and then. Sometimes it was for firewood(rarely), sometimes for wild mushrooms and sometimes for berries... But whenever he took me with him, it was always a sort of a "dark adventure" for me(something my grandmother didin´t approve). You see, in the Slavic lands, especially here, deep in the Carpathian mountains, to travel into the forests is always something to be worried about. The older people knew it and that´s why they always treated the forests with respect.
    But what I wanted to say: Whenever we(I and my grandfather) were about to enter the forest, we always stopped and bowed down in respect. That´s because, unlike in the village(and the surrounding meadows and fields), here(in the forest) rules a different master. "And he is not human," my grandfather used to add. "Lesny duch" he called him(The Forest spirit... Lešij). If you disrespect the forest, you disrespect him... and Lešij notices it. My grandfather taught me certain rules of how not to disrespect him... First of all, always bow down before entering the forest - that´s a good start. Never sing, never whistle, and in general try to make as little noise as possible... Never spit on the ground. Never disturb the animals in any way. Also never venture too deep into the forest, because(as my grandfather told me) the deepest depths of the forest is where it´s heart lies - that´s where the Lešij is the strongest...
    There are of course many other things he taught me about the forest throughout the years, but when it comes to Lešij, his main advice was to fear him.

    @ fudgemuppet my problem with this start when we look at 1 particular quest geralt undertakes. in said quest there are 2 options. 1 he can kill the leshen. 2 he can complete its trails. should he so complete them the leshen can be seen watching as he gives offering to it then it allows him to leave. leshens seem to be deeply sentient. now on the other hand if you kill the beast a small bit of cut content reveals that the village hardly out lasted the leshen. it did indeed hold true to its promises. it made the men great hunters and it stocked the woods with game for them. so long as they respected the pact. so this leads me to belive that leshens may almost have been golem like constructs created by ancient druids. this could even be from the high elves themselves during the time of the conjuncture of spheres

    leshiy is basically a trickster. he loves to make ppl lost in the forest, so you can't leave it, but if he likes you or if you manage to ask him and make offerings, he will let you leave the forest or will bring you to some nice place. russian leshiy is usually a small old man, who can be easily mistaken for a stump

    another note. it seems the totems of the beast are more then just markers for teritory. it has been said that through these totems a leshen can continue to be reincarnated. it does this by using its spirit to posses trees and the woodland beasts which it then uses in a ritual to posses a dead tree and be born anew
