These old machines really were a work of art, both inside and out. I like the top loading systems, although the front loading decks make more sense. I have a top loading tape deck, but it's a Tascam multi-track recorder, and a lot newer than this.
Yes I agree. They were built to be opened again, and the engineering was on display. Those Tascam multi track recorders were really neat, a nice affordable way for bands to hash out their demos before digital recording was a widespread thing. Thanks for the comment!
Top loading wasn't strange when it was the only option! I still have my TEAC A-170S from 1977 and all the tapes I made with it. Wonderful machine. Some year I might obtain the drive parts it needs and get it working again. As for WD40 ... it is not allowed to exist in my world.
How much of the new stuff made today will still work in 50 years i wonder? Very nice deck and cool video. One doesn't see Toshiba gear too much these days.
Given that HIFI is between Normal and Chrome it's probable that HIFI selects Ferrochrome. Ferrochrome or type 2 cassettes didn't last long but were possibly around in the 70s when this was made.
This reminds me exactly of a Unitra Finezja but the first verison. Same exact features similar design but the unitra belts are made to last since mine have not been replaced and they still run, ive only swapped the gears!
Built like a tank and fully packed, wow haha. Must be very heavy with all of the metal inside. That tape mechanism looks very complicated. I am always wondering why manufacturers developed so many different tape mechanisms over the years to do the same job. It can also be (very) different in the same model range. Pretty weird.
Yes I wonder that too. It always impresses me how complicated and finely calibrated these mechanisms are, and all designed without computer assistance.
Very Good Video! I also have one, and mine has slow speed issues? Yours have something like this? And also, does someone has the instructions manual for it? Thanks a lot!
hi!! i have a top load deck as well and im having trouble with it. the left audio channel is much lower than the right and i was wondering if you had tips on how i could fix this? ive opened it up and tried cleaning the typical stuff but its not affecting the audio at all
I have always had a love for these top loading decks. This unit is one of my favorites.
Mine too! Thanks for the comment.
Nice deck! I'm very pleased you put some funky shots with that funky music.
That was to hide my funky dancing
Nice repair !
Thanks David! Appreciate the comment!
The two extra bulb holders are for the PT-490 Auto-Reverse direction lamps.
That’s great! Thanks for sharing that info.
I do remember those good old players, but kinda big

What a beast!
Thanks! The tape deck is quite substantial too! 😜

It was amazing how quickly the change to front loader happened. Within just a couple of years and no more top loaders.

Not much I’d wager, but this tape deck will probably still be rocking along.
@@TheBasementChannel most probably, yeah 😀
Had the same deck but it was branded Sharp and had the APSS instead of MQS
I’ve seen a very similar looking Teac branded one as well.

Awesome info, thanks for taking the time to share.
I thought ferrochrome was type III?
A bit like taking sandpaper to the heads, horrible useless tapes.

Ok, I had to google that one, but yes I see the similarities. Amazing the belts are still working!

Did you try changing the belt? This will fix most issues, but also try lubricating the moving parts. Thanks for the comment!

I had this issue once with a pair of powered speakers. New capacitors fixed them. You could try that?
WD40 is not proper lubricant! use the right stuff!
that just in case no one else posts it mate
Never! And no one can make me!!
