Installing a High-Output, Twin Row, LED bar on a New Land Rover Defender 110

  • The headlights on the Defender are extremely poor (the matrix lights, available in Europe and Australia, are a little better, but still much less good than the Discovery 5 or Range Rovers); and anyone thinking of using one in the back country should consider installing a high-level light bar to supplement the light -- especially if you live or travel in open or mountainous regions. In this video I talk about the high-level LED light I fitted to the OEM rack before the trip to the Arctic. I'll be swapping the light out for a STEDI bar this coming weekend, but the basic principles are useful. I'm hoping this will be useful to some of you, as it is a question I have been asked often on the other platforms to which I post.
    Feel free to comment below with useful and engaging debate; "It's a pretender not a defender" or "solid axles rule OK" comments will be deleted -- just sayin'.

    • @shedlock2000
      @shedlock2000  2 года назад +1

      Hey Darren and Kelly!
      Thanks for reaching out. I don’t think I have any photos now, but there’s a jumper post under a lid on the left hand side of the engine bay. Behind it are a series of kids that cover built-in large fuse holders (presumably for the factory fitted winch etc).
      The first one of these connects to the common strap that forms the base of the jumper post, and I screwed the electrical into that. Be careful to screw to the live side not the fused side, obviously).
      To be honest, there’s quite a lot of space and potential under there to mount electrical items too (which is appreciated and a shift for JLR!). Behind the cover for the jumper post are a few other large-fuse outlets. The common rail splits on mine and feeds several fuse holders - any of these will do). Some of the common rail fuse holders are smaller than others, so you’ll find something there that’s useful.

    • @shedlock2000
      @shedlock2000  2 года назад +1

      At the @5:20 mark, you’ll see me pick up the red jumper cover. Behind that towards the windscreen is a black cover. The positive common rail is under that - and that’s where you’ll find something to screw to.

    I just fitted some Lazer grille lights in to my 90, triggered by the main beam 12V signal at the back of the headlamp. I don't think you can use the contactless CAN reader to trigger them from the 12V signal wire as that's not a CAN signal. If you want to use the contactless reader then I think you need to intercept the CAN signal under the seat in the cabin and then route a wire back to the relay.

    • @shedlock2000
      @shedlock2000  3 года назад

      I think you’re right. I was hoping just to use the 12v feed as a trigger wire to induce the switch (surely 12v is easier to induce a current from than a 5v)! but I think I’ll have to go under the seat.
      I’m a bit reluctant to do this, because getting the wire from under the seat to the bonnet is a much bigger pain to do than simply splitting a wire from the headlamp bundle.
      I’m also disappointed because the contactless reader and CanBus interface (which cost over $200) don’t work fully: the interface doesn’t output 12v for the position (or side) lights, as there’s an error with the software. This means I’d have to send it back to Lazer Lamps to be re-programmed at some stage when CanM8 fix it (whenever that may be). So the contactless stuff I bought won’t work properly. I can’t say I’m very happy about that.
      Did you just cut and splice the 12v feed to the headlamp unit to get your feed? I believe the main beam feed is purple and the side light is green - is that right?
      How do you like your lazer lamps? I was keen to install low-level lighting, but they won’t fit with a winch, so I’m not yet sure how to proceed.

    • @robinbalen
      @robinbalen 3 года назад

      @@shedlock2000 I bought the CanBus interface and contactless reader and returned them to Lazer after going through the same thought process. Much easier to just pick up the 12V signal from the headlight. I cut and spliced the main beam signal using waterproof gel crimp connectors. It's a purple wire with an orange stripe going to Pin 10. You can quite easily test it with a voltmeter from the connector end before you cut in to it by flashing your headlights (but you need two people really!). I'm impressed with the lights so far but haven't had chance to use then in anger yet!

    • @robinbalen
      @robinbalen 3 года назад +1

      I did wonder about sourcing a male and female headlamp connector somehow and then making a little wiring harness to split off the main beam signal. That way you’re not touching your car wiring and it’s easy to return it to stock configuration. But in the end I just cut the wire!

    • @shedlock2000

      Yeah, a little patch lead would be the bomb! I wonder why JLR or @powerfulUK haven't got on that idea!

      @@shedlock2000 I did ask PowerfulUK if they’d be interested in making one up but they didn’t seem keen. Which is fair enough as they don’t sell any products that use the front headlamp signal (yet), but they do have a harness for the rear reverse light signal. So fingers crossed they can develop something.

      It’s not my preferred option either, but there’s no drilling and it’s not really obvious unless you’re looking for it.
      The top panel (above the windscreen) does come off, but it’s a big job and requires the roof lining to come down too. So there are better ways, just not easier.

      Good luck! I have finished the install on the STEDI bar (video coming soon), and I would recommend that you double check the depth of your light bar if you have a sunroof. Pay attention to the dimensions I have provided. I pushed the Stedi as far forwards as I can and the light is still too close to the sunroof and the sunroof won't slide back (though it does tilt open). I would suspect that your light bar can be no taller than 2 12" if you want the sunroof to open.

      Hi Graham,
      Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I reached out to one of the group members, Jonas Falk, and he’s this to say about his:
      “Steven Firth Hi. I’ve only had the car for a few weeks and haven’t done any heavy towing of like my boat yet. I’m also a gentle driver... But on various swedish winter roads and snowy small forest roads it works very well. My former car was a Disco4 with also a 3 lit diesel 6-cyl. This new straight 6 seems smoother and also is a bit more economic. I think I average appr 0,7 lit/10km compered to 0,9 in the Disco. So imho it’s a very nice engine with plenty of power for my needs.”
      I hope that’s useful! Seems like a positive review!

      @@grahamwest1079 No worries! Hope you get some more life out of the Puma. The new defender is a big culture shock, and less a less necessary move in the UK where distances travelled are not that great. However, they really are an improvement here: Taryn and I have just come back from a couple of day trip to Canmore and the surrounding area and knocked up 1700 miles. 1700 miles in 3 days is much easier to do in a new defender than and old defender!
