The referee in the Italy - Korea match was Byron Moreno of Ecuador. Here's an interesting footnote about him from Wikipedia... Moreno was arrested on September 21, 2010 at the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, while trying to smuggle in six kilograms (over thirteen pounds) of heroin, which was hidden in his underwear. In January 2011, he pleaded guilty to the charges in a New York courthouse, facing a possible ten years in prison. On September 23, 2011, Moreno was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison on the heroin smuggling charges. He was released from prison 26 months later and returned to Ecuador
You claim that the Moreno referee made a biased judgment. In the game, Italy also had a lot of decision-making benefits. For example, in the first half, Christian Bieri smashed a Korean player's nose with his elbow, but the referee went over and the Italians did a series of elbow attacks, but the referee just passed. So the Italians did dirty play all the way through the game, but they still got the ball rolling. But why can the umpire claim to have biased Korea?

South Korea fairly deserved to be in the semi finals.
ITALY
South Korea played a solid game and they had the upper hand in terms of possession as well (56%).
There were bad and good calls for both teams and the call for Totti's red card was completely fair as he dived and everyone understands that.
He was crouching and about to go down before contact. Also, the South Korean defender got the ball so it was a fair tackle. However, Totti screamed for a penalty for a fair challenge which could have also caused the referee to give him a yellow card.
Italia played very rough against South Korea as well. Korea had 28 fouls and Italia had 22 fouls which isn't that big of a difference.
South Korea were actually more effective because they created more chances even with fewer shots. South Korea had 11 shots which 7 of them were on target. However, Italy had 14 shots, but only 6 were on target. It wasn't just because South Korea just finished their chances. They played the game extremely well.
The South Korean team was very good in 2002 as they were able to beat Portugal (2-1), Poland (2-0), and drew with the United States (1-1). This made them on top of their group against 2 well-respected European teams. This isn't just a coincidence. They dominated the games they played.
When you search RUclips about a controversy that was actually just made by salty Europeans (10%) and Japanese (90%) people. Korea played the better game and they were clinical in front of the goal. Japanese people hate the fact that Korea made it to the semi-finals which is an unimaginable achievement in East Asia. Therefore, they make videos that showcase highlights of Korea playing dirty vs Italia while not showing the dirty fouls that Italia made.
Also, Byron Moreno (Referee) has no reason to help Korea anyway. Even if a home advantage existed, a referee wouldn't support a random team from East Asia called South Korea. It would be more reasonable to support one of the European teams or the South American teams. The referee was Mexican which doesn't relate in any way to South Korea nor Italia.
SPAIN
I don't have much to say for Spain. Spain (21) committed more fouls against South Korea (20). The possession was pretty balanced with Korea (51%) and Spain (49%).
Spain had much more shots (18) and more on target (8) compared to Korea (8 shots, 3 shots on target). However, Spain weren't clinical and didn't take their chances. It isn't South Korea's fault that Spain couldn't score the shots on target. In the penalty shootout, the fourth kicker (Joaquin)'s shot was saved. There, Korea was able to capitalize.
Yeah... forgetting that the line ref against Spain got arrested by the FBI for fraude and matchfixing and the guy against Italy spent 2.5 years in prison for the same crimes... Also, you're kinda dumb if you think that a ref would fake "just because he'd prefer a country"... do you know how money works?

For my money, this was the weirdest world cup ever.
Germany was actually pretty crappy that year - and had a lucky run to the final. I didn't think that much of Brazil either - who won the cup. France absolutely *face planted*. Korea beat Italy, got stupid lucky against Spain, but all that being said - there's always a world cup every 20-30 years that just doesn't make sense, while making sense all at the same time. I mean that was the first cup we EVER saw the two biggest soccer super powers Germany and Brazil - play in the final... and I could name at least 6 or 7 team - on both sides - that were better than those two.
That's what makes that tournament so exciting. For the quality of soccer- but also the absolute absurdity of the results sometimes.
This keeps giving me goosebumps everywhere. The Koreans have stole the hearts of many, during the 2002 FIFA WC. The Dutch have rooted enthusiastically for the Korean team, and the positive energy of their play has given us so much joy. It made us forget the total failure of not even qualifying with the Dutch team.
I remember seeing korea playing there final friendly against the scottish before the tournament.
The fans straight away struck me, as unique.
South koreans were the best home fans of any host nation i have seen in 8 world cups i have seen now, in my life. I loved the way the fans in the stadium, did there thing, and it made the experience of those watching more enthralled.
For all those moaning about this or that. Host nations always have a benefit of playing at home. Home teams, always get more decisions then away teams.
By the way, that spain goal, people complained about, the goalie stopped with the whistle, and he would of easily of saved that, if there was no whistle. So no, spain did not score a goal, the refs whistle, saw south korea stop playing.
Italy are the only ones whom could feel hard done by, in 2002, as many decisions went against them, not only in south korea game.
Sports is full of cheating, and most of it, is about things the fans have no idea is going on. There is never a clean tournament ever in international football. So claiming 2002 was any different are wrong, every world cup you can be sure, has enormous amounts of cheating going on.
2002 was no more scandalous then any other world cup.
Underdog teams can win. Uruguay didn't win 1950 WC by cheating. They did it by playing better despite being a massive underdog and no one can actually say anything about it. Germany also did the same beating Hungary. Same with France 1998. They all won by actually being good. Cheating cannot be condoned.

If Korea was that good they wouldn't even let the ball touch their net in the first place, so that no one would be arguing about "ambiguous disallowed goal". The fact that spain had 2 disallowed and Korea struggled to find the Spanish net, meant that Spain actually played better. This is robbery, just like Uruguay vs Ghana.. Worse than that actually. Also, Italy's golden goal is the biggest red flag. That's why they don't deserve the semi final in terms of their playing ability, if it was 2018 Spain and Italy would undeniably have still won. Korea robbed them, plain and simple.

FIFA didn't ignore that. FIFA launched an investigation, but they found no proof of paying the referees or anything else. The matches were not a disgrace.

I feel sick to see this video and hear how FIFA explain these matches. Before this Cup the Korean Republic had never won a match in the history of the World Cup. However, during the tournament in 2002, Korea defeated a golden generation of Portugal players (like Rui Costa, Figo, Sergio Conceicao) and giants Italy and Spain through dirty tactics consisting of playing rough football and having advantages from the referees (No cards given, no fouls given, no suspensions, cards and fouls given to the opposing team, goals disallowed for the opposing team, offside calls).
Ecuadorian referee Byron Moreno, who sent off Francesco Totti during the game, was released in 2016 from a 26-month sentence for drug trafficking in New York.
Egyptian referee Gamal Mahmoud Ahmed Al-Ghandour only refereed six matches 3 in 1998, 3 in 2002, and he never refereed for FIFA again after the Korea - Spain match.
