Louis van Gaal had plenty of moments of brilliance during that World Cup. That flexible 5-3-2 formation put Spain into a lot of trouble, and then he made a few switches to use Dirk Kuyt and Daryl Janmaat to mark Alexis Sánchez individually against Chile. Then in the Round of 16 against Mexico, he put Huntelaar especially for the penalties, and it came in handy for that infamous Robben dive. And then this happened.

For my old 11 a side team I was part of a penalty shootout. To be honest I wasn't one of the chosen 5 to take a penalty but it ended up going to sudden death. Their keeper was a lot better than ours, he was like early 40's but a real veteran, Allan McGregor type guy so I knew I needed to place the ball with power to beat him. He seemed to know exactly where everyone was going to put their shots so I decided to shoot with my weaker foot since I didn't exactly know which way I would go I figured he probably wouldn't either. These techniques like trash talk and visual distraction really do work. As GK i once read about it and did same in my school team zonals. I remember i saved 3 penalties. You need to once get in the shooter's head and then watch knees and non striking foot position. Obviously it doesn't always work it's just an approach and not a cheat code cuz at higher levels where there are pros like Ronaldo, Kane they will most likely score.

I remember that. Weird thing is they didn't repeat the feat against Argentina. In the 2014 semis or the 2022 Quarters. It was Emi Martinez who excelled at the mind games in 2022. I wasn't at all surprised they won the shootout in the final, Martinez already had a warm up round with 2 penalties in the last 40 mins of play, plus he used all sorts of mind games.
I'm surprised every team in the World Cup does not have a designated penalty goalie given the frequency shootouts happen in national tournaments.
