Argentina's President Milei denies ordinary Argentines are paying for austerity cuts | BBC News

- Argentina's President Javier Milei has denied that it is ordinary Argentines who are paying for his radical austerity measures.
In a BBC interview, Mr Milei, who campaigned with a chainsaw to symbolise his desire to slash public spending, insisted that the political class were paying for his huge cuts, not the people.
The right-wing economist was voted in after years of high government spending and high debt.
He spoke to the BBC's South America correspondent, Ione Wells, on 6 May 2024.

Journalist= so when will the Argentina's economy improve? Give me a date
Milei= the economy of a nation is rather complex but inflation is decreasing and wages are going up and due time everyone will reap what they sow.
Journalist= Uh!? You said what?! Listen I need an exact date...c'mon this isn't rocket science
She was very persistent in playing this foolish game
She is propogandising that 30 years of a destroyed economy can be fixed in days, when it actually takes bold, risks and suffrage to fix it over decades if it's even possible.
That's why the ideology the journalist is championing is so dangerous. It fails to recognise the extreme destruction that she champions then she bludgeons the solution all to save the socialists in gov making mass wealth with money printed salaries at everyone's expense.
It's such a childish question too. Expects him to give specific dates the economy will be 'fixed' like he's predicting the afternoon weather. If only something so incredibly complex were so simple.

Honestly this interview is bugging me. Not a fan of milei but as someone who understand the basics principles of macro and micro economics, simply asking for a time-line in which the economy starts to do a U turn is nearly impossible. There are so many factors that contribute to a recovering economy and the largest being the human factor. What people choose to do with their money, be it spend, save, invest or do nothing with it. Then she goes on "but with all do respects what's the time-line ". It really is quite frustrating hearing her ask questions.
The title of this is misleading. That is not what I heard him say. Argentina will be happy in the end that Milei chose to rip the bandaid off. Painful, but they'll be done with the suffering sooner. Just watch what happens in the US. With our debt ever growing, and no cuts to spending or other corrective actions, and household debt is growing too, it will be a very long and painful death for our country. My husband is an economist and agrees with Milei's approach, painful as it may be. If they can, they should also seek to get out from under the IMF yoke for good.
Lots of bandaids to be sure.
Her premise seems to massively discount Argentina's economic/fiscal situation. Milei's rationale is in line with the hard truths Argentina has to face at some point.
Not sure where you're coming from here. Both were over 30 years ago and were not austerity measures. Unfortunately, the State still plays a role which always disastrous. Despite this rail passenger numbers are historically high and investment in both water and rail has been much higher than under state control. Granted OFWAT has been useless but what NGO isn't. If you are referring to Milieu's austerity measures then when you are faced with hyper hyper inflation (caused by a socialist State disregarding basic economic theory that inflation is caused by too much money chasing too few goods and services) then desperate but focused measures are needed.
We must protect this man at all costs.

But, the UK had a leader like that. Her name was Margaret Thatcher pushing the same neoliberal policies that destroyed the living standards of ordinary people and enriched the elite. and things went further downhill from then on.
Is this really the best the BBC can do these days? What a wasted opportunity. This is the worst Milei interview I’ve seen. The correspondent either has no knowledge of economics, or hasn’t done her homework ahead of the interview, or both. More than half the interview trying to corner Milei using an anecdotal story about one person, then about the Falklands/Malvinas (which is so low down on Milei’s list of priorities given the unenviable in-tray he’s inherited) and then inane questions about Israel, followed by trying to make false accusations about what he said about China. Far from being a madman, Milei is so calm and knowledgeable, and answers each question eloquently and honestly - if only the correspondent would LISTEN! What kind of crap, lazy journalism is this?
He handled himself like a champ despite her hostility.
The interviewer thought this interview was a great opportunity for her to talk a lot.
