Heyy so I noticed that since the molds have a hole on the top what happens is that when you put it in the pressure chamber you are putting a force on that spot so that might cause that weird pattern at the bottom of the planet. Great vids btw.

The thing with resin is that it has a kind of "convection" flow, like magma on the inside of the earth where the hotter magma rises to the top. So because it creates heat when it cures, the resin in the center rises and the cooler resin that touches the walls falls.
Also the pressure chamber plays a role because the invisibly tiny air bubbles in the mixed resin get squished together by the high pressure and so the resin moves against itself and doesn't stay in it's place.
That's why it's hard to do all-in-one resin pours where you want things to stay in a specific place.
You could try a different sphere mold (or pour one out of silicone yourself and cut it in half) and just paint your continents or stripes on the inside wall, let it cure until it's leathery and then just pour the rest of the resin in, so you have at least some parts in the specific places where you want them.

Katelyn, the sides have to be clean of other colors on your mold if you want stripes to show through. They were all smeared because of the dribbling from the spoon. When trying to break the fall of something like that, you have to pour away from the sides. If you want a visual of that techniques, look up some artisan soap channels, like RoyaltySoaps. They use it frequently, though with a different medium.

My son made a interesting observation. The reason you have vertical stripes may be caused by the rising bubble induced by the vacuum pull. Try it again with no vacuum chamber and see what you get.

Awesome vid....you guys are so perfect together it makes a joy to watch...I’ve tried this kinda thing....a lot....and the best way for Jupiter is literally one layer at a time....very slow but looks amazing....the mixing together is because the fluidity is to similar....if you space each layer every 30mins....you get actually layers....then you can gently swirl the most recent top layer to get the wispy cloudy layer

EvanAndKatelyn oh and I should have said, I use those 10cm Christmas ornament clear spheres......Dremel a hole where the 2 half’s meet , secure the half’s with some hot glue...and pour the resin in....thanks for the reply!

  • @saisujan9587

First of all, Love your channel :)
Secondly, if you wanna do layers with resin, specially if you are making a replica of jupiter or something like that :), try this:
pour 1 color and wait for it to almost set, but not completely, then pour your second color and repeat the same.....IK it is a labour intensive process but the end results are worth it.
BTW you don't have to worry about the bubbles much in a layering method as i have mentioned coz the bubbles will be hidden in between layers and more over the colors will help camouflage them..... amazing work again, LOVE THIS CHANNEL :)

What makes these enjoyable is not having everything perfect. I like being able to see when someone makes a mistake because that is typically when a viewer will also make a mistake and they know what to expect, what could happen if something goes wrong and how to correct it. Makes trying things less stressful as a viewer!

It would be a fun challenge, to first do a project ‚professionally‘ and then try to get the same result with more basic means...wood already cut to size at Lowe‘s, basic tools...often, it’s way easier to do that, if you’ve done something the right way first.
Like with cooking. You can improvise more easily with a recipe, you’re familiar with.

The problem of the layers being squished the day after was because you were presureizing the resin down which made the layers squish into each other making it look like the layers are directing to a point. Next time you should put the resin in the vacum chamber then try pouring int the mold make sure no splashes happen, so you dont form any new bubbles. Also, to have a seperate layers you could have waited for each layer to be in the gel state then try to pour your next layer. Making jupiter(not Jupiter like).

Oh my gosh! My dad has those exact sphere molds and I used them to make dyed ice planets!!! I had to check them constantly so that they would be in the gel state for water so I could get my next dyed water on them. It was so difficult and stressful.
