I read that they've actually studied this, and hypothesize that ruffs _know_ they're having sex with the cryptic males/faeders, but go ahead with it anyway, lol: "The faeders are sometimes mounted by independent or satellite males, but are as often "on top" in homosexual mountings as the ruffed males, suggesting that their true identity is known by the other males. Females never mount males. Females often seem to prefer mating with faeders to copulation with normal males, and normal males also copulate with faeders (and vice versa) relatively more often than with females. The homosexual copulations may attract females to the lek, like the presence of satellite males." Also: "Despite their feminine appearance, the faeders migrate with the larger 'normal' lekking males and spend the winter with them," suggesting - again - that the other males know the faeders are fellow males.
Every time I think about some of the things modern birds do to get some action, I can't help but imagine that the mating rituals of some dinosaurs must have been absolutely hilarious.
Pup314 "Eft" is a generic word of Old English origin for lizard or lizard-like creature. Red because, well, it's red. That is, until it returns to a pond after a few years and morphs into the green, flat-tailed, aquatic adult Eastern Red-spotted Newt.
Thanks so much to do a video on this beautiful and interesting bird. I’ve had the opportunity to see them in the mating season. They really are grandiosity with that beautiful plumage. Do you know that in Dutch we call them “kemphaan” , something like fighting rooster...
Okay but how do they fit on to the Tree of Life? How does this twig attached to the bird branch? What other birds stem from that same twig? it's easier if you draw a diagram like your avatar.
The second type of male is interesting but not unique. I seem to remember something else does this but I can't recall what it is, may even be a mammal. Funny how you sound quite judgemental about their behaviour. Just remember there will be a biological advantage to it.
@Mycel its animals. what are you even talking about? make them have ethics and a sense of society? some species could only reproduce by rape and its not ok because of human morality?
Marvelous, my plan was succesfull
Hail Giratina The true god congratulations man!

From what I've heard, there's the male "Ruffs", the female "Reeves" and the 3rd, female looking males are called "Rent Boys".
Love the feathers! So fluffy!
Can you consider doing a spotlight on the New England salamander/newt called the Red Eft, please. Thank you. Also where did its name come from?

Fun fact: In German this bird is called "Kampfläufer" which translates to battle strider or battle runner

Rape isn't a problem (in the animal kingdom).
It is actually really common and many animals have evolved an arms race between raper and rapee.
Amazing! And somehow, I've never even heard of them.
What a RUFF boi

I'm pretty sure that some cuttlefish do it. It wouldn't surprise me if that type of behavior is more common than we think.
What's next?
Those female looking males remind me of male feminists
why do you apply human ethics unto animals rape is totally fine if its in their nature
How do you call unconsentual sex ?
@Mycel its animals. what are you even talking about? make them have ethics and a sense of society? some species could only reproduce by rape and its not ok because of human morality?
@Mycel animals shouldnt be judged by human standards
