  • Finding more gold pickers! Falcon MD20 in action! In this video I explain how to find gold using the Falcon MD20 metal detector. I show set-up and use of this small metal detector that excels at detecting small gold.
This video is produced by Dan Hurd, Prospector, Miner, Teacher and RUclipsr, as part of his RUclips channel based on educational videos about gold mining, gold panning, prospecting, rock hounding, and mineral collecting.

Thanks again Dan, I picked up a Falcon MD20 as part of a purchase of mining equipment from a guy getting out of the mining hobby. The ex owner of the mining equipment pointed out the Falcon detector and asked if I had ever seen one of these, I said no and he replied make sure you try this out! Well after watching several videos on the Falcon detector (I will say yours was the most informative) the Falcon detector will be at the top of the heap in my gold prospecting tool kit.
    And again, Thanks Dan!

I have the MD20 detector. The manufacturer is a great guy and willing to explain everything. I use it on very old tailings. I can honestly say it works. It will go about 3 inches deep depending on the amount of gold and it will pick up micro gold. If you use it enough and see your results, you will get used to the tone when it hits on ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Yes it sounds off on copper and silver, but the tone is different when it hits on gold.

    Dan...Buddy.....
I have watched EVERY, video on RUclips that even mentions using this dandy little unit. There are several tutorials on it but none of them hold a candle to your explanation.
Very concise and simple language really put this over the top. The fact that you were able to use this in a “real world” situation and have both false and true readings just enhanced the video.
    Well done my friend...well done!
Now...if I can just find the time to get out and dig in the dirt with my Falcon....

Hi, Dan. Brian and Cora up in Dawson Creek. A couple of years ago I got a highbanker and pump and stuff at Goldstream Placer Supply, and he showed me this cool little MD20. A bit tricky to get adjusted but so easy to use. Saved me a lot of panning time when there was no color. Planning on a 3 week trip to Terrace, Dease Lake, Atlin, Yukon and Alaska in May. Tim at North Coast Detectors ordered me a new Axiom I'm dying to swing. Thanks for the great Demo.

Prices on this range from $270 (amazon) up to $330 (ebay), so it is definitely inexpensive. Thanks for the lead Dan Hurd! Looks like really cool equipment. Many of us prospectors are poor, or cannot afford to invest a lot into gear, so thanks again for the lead. It's hard to choose which detector(s) and very few of us can afford a Deus Ex.

    • @Danhurd

  • @robmart8255

When you first turn on the detector have the knobs turned to the left then slowly move the copper ring forward towards the red line. If it goes past or before the red line and gives off a signal mark that spot with a pencil around the ring. That will be the most sensitive. Sometimes it's not at the red line. Then the distance from the red line to the black line can be estimated or drawn around the detector for the indication of the black line. Mine for instance is a MD10 but they work the same. My mark is ahead of the red line about an 1/8" plus maybe. It's just so you know where your detector is actually set at. If it's way off the red line you could talk to Wally at the store they make the falcon and he'll guide you step by step on how to adjust the falcon. Great videos.

Dan.Hurd..thank today for showing the 'Pin-Pointer' metal detector..seeing how to set-open & operation..helped alot..seeing the machine point-out that small of 'flake of gold' is unbelievable..but, to actually see it..I am in shock..! Took my breath away..like WOW!!! I'm not making a mountain out of a mole-hill here..but, that's somethin..that small..??? Just blow's my mine..wow. thanks. Opens alot of possibilities...'what's differences: (1)Hand-held 'Pin-Pointer or (2) ' Falcon MD 20 metal detector ? aren't they both the same machine but different styles..?" Costs.. costs the same or different..? the md20 is that more sensitive than the handheld pinpointer..? just a few questions I'm curious about..? thanks Dan for another good video..

    • @Danhurd
      @Danhurd  6 лет назад +4

Falcon is FAR more sensitive than a pinpointer. However I probably would not use a Falcon for relic hunting or coin detecting because you would not need the sensitivity of the falcon for that. Where as a pinpointer is made specifically for that kind of job.

Nice. I see how one of these would be very handy at mining dumps and of course as demonstrated.
I found it easy to see a lot of the small gold in a crevice like that by pouring a 5 gallon buck or few washing the lite stuff away. Or with a running river some stiff black poly irrigation hose 3/4-1" (often used in drip irrigation systems) laid out with one end upstream will make a handy miniature "hydraulic monitor" to wash the lite stuff away.

Hi Dan, nice video on the use of the MD20. I've had one for about a year now, but have found it's too sensitive here in the mineralized ground of the southern Motherlode (I think). Anyway, I have a question. I've found that after I get it all tuned in and adjusted correctly (after testing it on some gold-in-quartz I have), if I swing the wand through the air with any speed, it sounds off. It also sounds off on my hand, forearm, forehead, etc. Is this normal for the MD20? Or, perhaps it's adjusted too sensitive, or maybe mine is defective? Thanks in advance, Rick

Nice. No bed rock where I dig but lots of nails and screws and lead. Great tool for your location though if I had that sort of ground and gold I would get one for sure. Cool tool ;-)

Love this one Dan. I have in fact used this detector in the past and they're super hot on the Bug Poop size gold. Having a somewhat substantial back ground in Electronics ( Military and Commercial Communications ) I've build a good number of DIY metal detectors in the past. Most of my detectors are DIY . The Falcon is one I've not got around to completing at this time. I should really get around to it here soon while I can still get out and about with one. Excellent Tool of choice for crevicing gold . All information required to construct the Falcon can be found at the Geotech 1 forum. The guys have come up with a number of schematics and modification including the Original Falcon 20 . Some modified versions of the same are well above the original detectors capabilities. www.geotech1.com/forums/showthread.php?17023-Falcon-MD20&highlight=Falcon

Dan...I bought one of these AND a Garrett Carrot 2 years ago...
The gold I find is so fine that I have yet to find a piece of gold that either will detect.
I would KILL to have a day with even 1 picker!

    And thank you.

But is it worth $260+ depending where you get one. Versus just a regular detector that is usable in many types of detecting

Hi Dan I love your videos and I always learn something new from them. I am in Wisconsin near The Kettle Moraine Hills where a small Creek cuts through the hills deposited by the glaciers long ago. I have panned out some very fine colors from under boulders there but not many. I also have a bounty hunter time ranger metal detector with a gold coil. Do you have any suggestions for my success?? I know wisconsin generally sucks for gold but that's what I am working with.

Nice instrument. Will help you to find the elusive pieces that a garden shovel misses. you should bring along a couple of different dental pics to get dwn in the crevases where fingers andpiecs of rock won't go.
Love and Peace. Blessed Be. Doug.

Thanks Dan, another great tutorial! What do you think about using this to find gold in magneticblack Beach sands? What about in the tidepools? Thinking of waterproofing my unit so I can check the cracks in the tidepools as everyone focuses on the sand...

What a nice toy, what is the price tag on the MD20?where can one buy the Falcon MD20? Looks like a piece of equipment that would be a good addition to my gold prospecting arsenal.

It would have been helpful if you described how the falcon worked.
From what I can tell, with non-ferrous metal, it sounds off on the way in and not on the way out.
    Might be worth mentioning.

I hope I did not edit that part out last night. Did the editing late. I'll go back and check right now. Because that is an important part of using the Falcon. I'm sure I mentioned that a couple times.
