    "A notable feature available in this generation was the automatic four wheel drive option called Quadra-Drive, which employed the New Venture Gear NV247 transfer case. This two-speed chain-driven transfer case uses a gerotor, a clutch pack coupled to a hydraulic pump, to transfer torque between the front and rear axles. The transfer case contains three modes, 4-All Time, Neutral, and 4-Lo. In 4-All Time, 100% of torque is sent to the rear axle in normal conditions. If the rear axle starts spinning at a higher rate than the front axle, hydraulic pressure builds up in the gerotor and causes the clutch pack to progressively transfer torque to the front axle until both axles return to the same speed. Neutral mode is intended for towing the vehicle. In 4-Lo, the front and rear axles are locked together through a 2.72 reduction gear ratio. The NV247 transfer case is mated to front and rear axles containing Jeep's Vari-Lok differentials. Vari-Lok differentials also use a gerotor to transfer torque between the wheels on either side of the axle. The major advantage of Quadra-Drive was that the combined transfer case and progressive locking differentials in each axle could automatically control traction between all four wheels. However, only the center differential could be permanently locked, and only in 4Lo. The Quadra-Trac II system included the NV247 transfer case with the standard open front and rear differentials." - Wikipedia
    But not all WJ's had the Quadra-Drive, but it doesn't even look like this driver engaged 4x4 move, he was jus tin the 1 wheel mode called 4x4 hi whch is just when one rear wheel turns until it spins then one front wheel spins to help out... in the 4x4 lo one wheel in the front and back are spinning at all times... then if you push the brakes all 4 wheels will spin for a short time... then if you have quadra-drive then you start with 1 wheel in the back and 1 in the front and if any wheels spins then wheel on the other side will spin to try to help out... it's complicated but again this driver didn't even turn on 4x4. In the snow the lighter vehicle has the advantage, but the Jeep WJ here isn't very heavy, but is heavier than the subaru.

    It helps that the jeep goes into the hole and the subarat goes around. But I think the point was to get stuck and get out not to avoid getting stuck.

    Just to be clear cause quite a few of you are confused. The Jeep as stated is 4x4 meaning either "selectrac" ( 242 transfer case, brake locking diffs), or "Quadra trac 2" ( 247 TC BLD). Now if that jeep had Quadra Drive (247 TC hydra-lok axles), like my wj does, it would have walked all over that and been wondering where's the challenge. Especially with the proper tires. Gotta love that Subaru though. And another note Subaru symmetrical awd is essentially QD. Slightly different though, QD is normally rwd and the fronts kick in when needed, Subaru is opposite. One thing that makes QD unique is the gerotor couplers in the diffs and one in the 247, as oppose to viscous couplers normally used in such applications. Look it up if you don't know. Not sure which system came first, but both seem to be great I can only attest to one. If you notice, pretty much any good electronically controlled awd system theses days or at least for a good 10yrs after QD was scrapped for QD 2 on the wk, is pretty much mimicking these two systems.

    This one is all about traction in the snow - not much of a test of 4WD or AWD ability. The biggest contributing factor are tyres. The Jeep definitely had wide thread tyres favouring mud and sand. They would by abysmal in snow, on any car.

    summary: jackass in jeep using the wrong drive setting and crappy tires gets high-centered repeatedly until a mound getting compacted down and dug out enough that a random scooby with a better driver rolls over it like nothing. Conclusion; if you don't know what you're doing the best 4wd system on earth isn't going to save you in a heavy suv that you didn't prepare for the conditions.

      William Todd then give credit to the Subaru driver. Stop making excuses as to why the Jeep didn't make it..good grief. Everyone says 4WD is better until an AWD beats it then it's driver error and bad tires, Excuses excuses...number 1, the Subaru just did better due to the driver hitting it at a better angle, which the Jeep driver couldn't even get over there and was clear when he was spinning and moving sideways, and number 2, a better AWD system...I've seen several videos of a Subaru doing better in the snow than a lot of GC's. It is what it is...my parents had A 95 and good tires and still didn't do better pushing snow to our mid bumper than my friggin RAV4! That's no joke at all. I've made a lot of people a believer in my two RAV4'S. Their 08 Sequoia puts the Jeep to shame in the snow! Absolutely night and day difference. I don't care what your reply is because my mind is made up and I've witnessed all of this firsthand 😄😄😄

      @@stephenmartin5766No, that Jeep is either 1) AWD fulltime or 2) 4x4 without lockers 3) 1 or 2 with a traction control ... in this video the Jeep doesn't 4x4 lo engaged, but the subaru is much lighter with the awd with traction control, so that makes it better until there is actually deep snow or where articulation is needed, then the jeep wins, you can watch an old XJ walk in awd high vs the new AWD subaru when articulation is needed on the TFL channels

    This was not a Jeep with QUADRA-TRAC II® 4x4 SYSTEM or the driver kept using 4x4 HIGH and not low like he should have in snow (wheels were going WAY to fast). THE COMPUTER system in the low mode detects slip and provides power to those with most traction and would have equal or bested the Subaru. GO TO THE PRO sites and check it out. Not some easy to fake video like this. THE difference??? Subaru comes standard with a great awd system on most of its cars. You have to pay for the top 2 systems in the Cherokee (There are 4 offered).

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 6 лет назад +1

      You must mean Quadra-Drive. Quadra-Trac is just full time 4WD with low range, Quadra-Drive gives you limited slip differentials...at least in the earlier models it did, newer models only give you limited slip rear differential.
      This is a Jeep Grand Cherokee late 90's early 00's model before the major overhaul by Fiat. So the GC in this video would have either had quadra-trac, quadra-drive, or selec-trac. By this time they had dropped command-trac. I just printed off the list of 4WD systems that Jeep has had over the years, they've had 16 different systems LOL...no wonder people get confused. Subaru went AWD because it is an extremely simple system since the driver does nothing at all the sensors do all the work no levers, buttons, switches, knobs, etc. Just get in and drive.
      The Quadra-Drive option is great, if you can find one that hasn't been beat to hell which is the case most of the time unfortunately people just don't take care of stuff. I spent a year looking for my current 98 GC with selec-trac 4WD and its in excellent condition almost show room condition with the exception of 2 rock chips in the hood and scratches in the rear bumper.
      I'm not as familiar with the new Subarus other than they're all AWD now, the only Subaru I've ever driven was an 88 4x4 Wagon, back when Subaru used a real 4WD system with both high and low range dang those things would go anywhere, course they also had more ground clearance than today's vehicles do :(. Don't get me wrong Subarus are good...well their automatic/CVT transmissions are garbage but their manual transmission equipped cars are great.

      The Suzuki showed up at about 1:50 in that video driving around. Suzuki Vitara 2000ish Euro model.
      The Subaru showed up at 7:30 in the video all sliver. Notice how much longer it is than the Vitara?
      At 8:40 the Forester was spinning around where the Jeep and Vitara beat down the snow.
      The reason for the spinning was no winter tires on the subaru. Subaru clutch system is good at directing power to certain wheels... but not a very heavy duty setup... you could not do this every day.
      Yes they are a really road manorly AWD with few bad habits... but you haven't driven many 4x4 vehicles or know how to recognize them out doing their thing or you would have not thought a suzuki was a forester.
      Subaru is a light duty every day grocery getter and nothing more. Good on gas and good in snow on roads.
      If you are doing anything else, you need a real truck for pulling hauling and real work.
      Yes I own quite a few 4x4's and was in the auto service business for many years.
      Have fun driving your mothers subaru... but when you break it... you will have to get a real job at the convenience store to pay for the repairs :)

      The Subaru obviously didn't go up the hill from the same location the others were trying to, it came up from another direction, otherwise it would have had the same issue...99% of the time the driver is the problem not the vehicle, the other 1% is the wrong tires for the application...This time they needed someone in the vehicles that knew how to drive otherwise they wouldn't have had that issue. Whoever was driving the Subaru obviously has been driving in snow for a few years, the others well probably came from southern California where snow is pretty rare.

      Jeeps still hold their resale value very well. I bought my Wrangler brand new for 33,000 and 4 years later sold it for 19000 considering I had to replace the engine at 65000 miles because it burned oil like crazy then blew up. I bought a Subaru after 😁 great car and honestly handles snow much better than my jeep did.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 6 лет назад

      The Subaru may last as long as a Jeep if you didn't get the automatic transmission in the Subaru their automatic transmissions are not that good ask any transmission shop...although they love seeing them come in for repairs LOL.
      The Jeep isn't exactly powerful, the engines are made to work, not for racing, therefore they have a lot of low end torque to easily and quickly get them moving from a stop but if you take care of them they'll run for many hundreds of thousands of miles...my 96 JGC 4x4 is still running around the valley with over 500k on it, and only thing somewhat major was the transfer case was rebuilt 2 years ago.
      I can't say much for the newer Jeeps though, I haven't owned one newer than my current 98 JGC 4x4. Quality has gone downhill for sure on them since 2004 when Fiat got their hands in them.
      If I had to buy a new vehicle today though, it would most likely be the new Subaru Ascent. Although brand new vehicle in the Subaru lineup, it sounds like it may be a good competitor to the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Ford Explorer but at about 1/2 the cost...yikes!! The same equipped Jeep Grand Cherokee that I have now would be over $55k today if I were to buy a new one ouch!!!! and to think that in a couple years you could pick one up for probably $20k or less.

      @wildbill23c 6 лет назад

      How would you know that? And...Quadra-Trac and Quadra-Drive aren't AWD...they are full time 4WD with low range which the Subarus lack. The difference between Quadra-Drive and Quadra-Trac is the Quadra-Drive (not a very common option) gives you front and rear limited slip differentials otherwise the transfer cases are internally the same. Selec-Trac is a totally different system and gives you 2WD, 4WD Part Time high range, and 4WD Full Time high range, and Low Range....and all 3 systems give you neutral so you can flat tow them behind another vehicle something that many vehicles aren't capable of including Subaru.

    So funny how all these guys are making excuses for the Jeep . Hate to burst your bubble but the Forester had no hood scoop which means it wasn’t turbo just a plain old 2.5L 4 cylinder which also means it was the lower end model. So if you need a top of the line Jeep to compete with a base model Subaru I feel bad for you. The second most used excuse seems to be tires . It seems fair to assume the Subaru is probably running the stock all seasons they come with based on the stock rims. So to clarify a base model Subaru with a 4 cylinder is out performing a v6 Jeep with 4x4 , off road tires , better ground clearance ...... ha ha ha

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 6 лет назад +1

      Bad driver, pretty simple explanation. A friend of mine had an 87 Subaru GL 4x4 Wagon we took hunting one year, we were pushing snow over the hood of it and had 4 donut spare tires on it because my friend was too cheap to go buy tires LOL. They're pretty capable. Jeeps are great too, but like any vehicle you have to have the right driver in it, otherwise it'll get stuck pretty easily. Doesn't matter what badge if you have a horrible driver they'll get nowhere fast in snow.

    well, the Grand loosened the snow for the wimpy subipoo.. lol. i could hear the jeep shifting. he had it in high. need low for that. also that sub has limited slip as that jeep has a dana 35 axle w a nv242 transfer case. jeep could have done better with wheelbase as the cherokee is too long for a 4wd carrying the jeep legacy. now a limited slip differential set up like quadradrive would have gone up the hill. driver didnt seem to know what to do either. im no expert but that subapoo driver did a better drive job.

      Subaru quit making good cars in the late 80's when they got rid of the real 4WD system. Never saw a Subaru all winter 2 winters ago because the snow was too deep, unless you had a real 4WD you weren't going anywhere, those cute little AWD systems are useless in anything but a few inches of snow significantly related to the idiot driver and the lack of ground clearance in today's vehicles.

    • @wildbill23c
