Cruise control stopped working suddenly on my 2010 Honda Fit. One of the comments here mentioned that the switch was behind their clutch rather than the brake. Found mine behind the clutch, taped the penny, crossed my fingers and went for a test drive. Unbelievable! Cruise control is back! Thanks so much for your post!
I did this repair using exactly 1 penny and a length of electrical tape and this fixed two issues my daughters 2007 Accord Hybrid was having - no working cruise control, and the Auto-Stop feature did not work. Her brake lights had been working properly, it was just the cruise control and auto-stop. Now, both work perfectly. Thank you so much for posting this video. We are so lucky to live in the time of RUclips.
@RickSmiley, that’s awesome to hear. Yes, RUclips has revolutionized the Information age we live in. Kids today have no clue what life was like before the internet.
For all the people who used the penny, all you really needed to do was loosen the Brake Light switch and put it in further then tighten it back into the holder, they have a threaded portion to adjust them over time for this reason. Great idea for those who don't have any car knowledge but an easy adjustment for those who do. Great video!
I'll be completely honest, I had absolutely no faith that this was going to work but I figured what the hell, it's free and simple. Damn if this shit didn't work. Holy crap I have cruise control again! Thanks a million! It's a miracle.
Jeff, it's been 5 years since you made this video, but it's still helping people! Your tip prevented me from depleting my battery overnight until I could get a brake pedal stop pad in the morning. Many thanks.
Your video got me to thinking about something that won't fall off over time and the first thing that popped into mind of a simple thumb tack placed in the middle of the piece of rubber. This works and doesn't depend on tape which eventually may unwrap and penny fall to the floor. Thanks for you video. Helped me find a better fix.
Man, you deserve a medal! I just did this on a 2007 CRV i just bought, and it totally worked, Thank you so much. It cost me a dime though, could not find a damn penny , lol.
@saulclaws, well, the unfortunate thing is that it cost you 10 times more than what the video was trying to save you, but still about 40 times less expensive than the replacement pad, lol. Some of the little things in life can mean so much. Congrats and enjoy not having to press the pedal on long drives.
People, just adjust the length of that sensor, unscrew, set the correct length and screw again. It is pretty easy, I guess from time to time, you have to check it because it can cause your cruise control to stop working and also the brake lights, or if adjusting it doesn´t solve anything, you need to change that piece. Very useful video though, it made me realize what the problem was in my 2012 honda civic.
Wow!! THIS WORKED LIKE A CHARM!! My cruise control Main would light, but not engage. I searched all through the internet, called Honda and asked at Firestone. No one know nuthin!! Saw this video, scraped up a penny and some tape, & it WORKED. (FYI, that little button like piece that pushes the plunger did have a slight indent). THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO, YOU SAVED ME A POTENTIALLY EXPENSIVE TRIP TO HONDA!!!
👍👍👍👍👍2014 Honda Accord Hybrid. Used this trick last week (10/06/2023). Amazing, just saved $800.00 at the Honda dealership. They wanted $180.00 for Computer Code re-out plus $640.00 for Cruise Control Module. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
@debbieschiff77, you’re welcome!!! I’m so happy you were able to save so much money. Can’t get much cheaper than a penny! Just goes to show the dealership are either idiots or Schwindlers. Neither are a good look for them.
Thank you! I was sitting under my car sad that this trick didn’t work when I saw an identical sensor sitting on the clutch! Turns out that was the one that needed a penny to work and now I have cruise control!!
hey guys, what happens when you push in the clutch (or brake if automatic trans)? The cruise control doesnt know to turn off right? So does the engine just rev? I know you can press the CRUISE button to turn it off, but what if you didnt Im just wondering
Just bought an 99 Accord yesterday for a daily driver/work car and this just saved the day! My commute to and from work will be so much more enjoyable now. Thank you so much.
Super video. Inserted the penny and the formerly dark dash cruise light lit up green and the speed was regulated. Thanks DIY Jeff! You have saved many of us numerous pennies!
You are the man! My mom had a shop repair this today for almost $100 and while the brake lights came off the cruise control was still out. I did this and it's back. I'm my Mom's hero! And I said I'd only charge her a nickel! Haha! Thanks brother, and God Bless.
I thought it was crazy but it freaking worked. You're amazing dude. only 1% of my plunger was not going down on its own.. hardly noticeable but enough to cause the failure.
Thanks! Lost cruise control today, 2016 CRV. After I saw you video, I saw my pad had a small dent, not much and it was a little off center. I rotated the pad so the pin hit another location. The pin is much smaller. I also checked my fuse, but as I pulled it out it fell behind the plastic and into the frame disappearing completely, so I replaced it. Cruise control works again! Since technically I couldn't see if it was the fuse or not, I'll give you the credit! Thanks again!
I have a 2004 Honda Civic coupe and I live by the cruise control whenever possible. A couple of months ago CC just stopped working and this video helped me fix the issue. The rubber piece was missing completely but the penny and electrical tape did the job. Thanks!
With, unbelievable it work on mine,i thought have to spend hundred to repair,at last,i found out the original rubber has gone, nothing to press the button now, thanks alot
Its working i tried it on Honda Civic 8 2007 manual transmission because i had the same problem and i put penny on my clutch and it works again without problem. Great video thanks sir!
My odessy cruise control had the same problem , from the idea of this video, I loosen the lock nut by half turn and bought the switch closer to the washer. It works perfectly. Thanks for the sharing.
Dude you're the best , I thought this might have been the problem but I thought it would go hand-in-hand with brake lights not turning off. I gave it a try anyway and now I have cruise control for my long drive Upstate this weekend! Thanks so much hahaha
I had the same doubt about this being the fix, because I had recently replaced the disintegrated bumper with a new rubber bumper to fix my "brake lights always on" problem. So when my CC went missing, I checked to see that the new bumper was still in place and that the brake lights were still turning off when the pedal was not pushed. So I thought the CC Cancel function would still be working in conjunction with the brake light on/off circuit. Turns out the CC Cancel activation occurs at a point a little "further in" in the travel of the push button plunger of the brake light switch. So if the rubber bumper has even a small indent, the plunger remains sticking just a little bit out, and the CC Cancel function kicks in, even if the brake light function still works. Solution is to replace the soft rubber bumper with one made from a harder rubber, or nylon, like I did, and now everything works properly. Thanks Jeff, from another satisfied viewer !!!
The rubber pad on my 2002 CR-V wasn't even indented from the push pin but I went ahead and did this anyway... and it has worked wonders for it! I'm surprised it works flawlessly now because like I said, that rubber pad looked quite new. Thanks for the video.
My 1999 Acura TL had intermittent cruise control issues, the issue was the brake switch was not fully closed when the brake pedal was not engaged. I replaced the broken plastic part that engages the switch, problem fixed, this will also fix issues with the brake lights staying on when parked. The same switch controls both. Thank you for the fix Jeff.........Victor
Thanks so much for this. I just drove 1100 miles without cruise and with this fix my cruise is now working again. Unfortunately I didn't know the cruise wasn't working until we started our trip.
This was easy to do and works like a charm, cruise control remains engaged even over bumps now, where before it was disengaging constantly. Thanks, I suspect that you saved me some money that I would have thrown at the Honda Service Department. Also, the cruise still disengages with the tap of the break without a problem.
89 Accord automatic. Bought a junkyard controller, didnt help. Found this video, tried screwing the brake sensor closer to the pedal, that worked. THANKS for the tip.
*Manual transmission* Unfortunately the switch on the brake pedal wasn't causing my issue. However while checking the brake pedal, I noticed a similar switch on the clutch pedal. A penny and some duct tape and I was back in business. This also cleared the VSA light that came on at the same time the cruise stopped working. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
Nice video. An alternative is to reposition the switch instead. This switch itself is threaded and locks into a nut installed above the brake pedal. I found this out by buying a new switch and realized that the original switch can be readjusted or repositioned against the rubber grommet as shown in the video. The switch comes out by a turning it a 1/4 turn counter clockwise. Now the switch can be reinserted to make contact with the grommet as needed. Once in the correct position, just turn it clockwise to lock it in place.
Thanks for the tip! Went on a long drive yesterday and mine stop working (would not set, 2007 CRV), The plastic stopper was indented by the switch enough to tell the system brake was touched. As we know, just touching the brake pedal deactivates the cruise. I never had an issue with the brake lights staying on which is common when the plastic stop is badly worn or missing. You can buy a replacement on aliexpress for $2 but I just silicone a dime on the face of the stop and all is good. Note the indent from the switch in the stop was not centered, so turning it 180 deg would probably get it working for a while.
Thank you so much, I Have a 2007 civic coupe and I use the cruise control all the time. Today it stop working...i was so bummed....Your video was very helpful, i got it working back. Thank you!!
Thanks for the video I have been having trouble trying to figure out why my brake lights would stay on too and this seems to have fixed both of those problems
This is by far the First Place Blue Ribbon Hack of the year! I was expecting a how to replace a cruise control video and am so grateful I saw this first. What is sorta strange is my honda cr-v is a first gen 1997. The tape I used was white and when I found it the rubber was. White. Maybe it was replaced one time? Either way I think this will last longer. Now I can afford to take the day off. (I'm retired lol)
Hi, thanks for the fix! I wanted to let the viewers know that the brake light switch is adjustable. A slight adjustment to eliminate the slack and my cruise control works again!!!
Massive thanks bro I have been troubleshooting my 1990 integra cruise control for weeks and this fixed it instantly! I went for the more expensive part and used a nickel with superglue, just to make sure. Once again, thank you so much!
There you go! Amazing advice and a simple fix on a 1988 Prelude. I used a nickel, (we don't have pennies in Canada). I now have Cruise Control !!! Meantime, my local "HONDA DEALERSHIP" told me that the whole system needed replacing due to the age. They are IDIOTS!!! It would have cost me over $5000 (parts & labor) for them to replace what they said was needed and even then, the system would not work because all the parts were fine except for a $2.00 rubber stopper. They would have replaced several components that didn't need replacing, and in the end, I would pay a fortune for replacements that my car didn't need. AND BEST OF ALL, (sorry, cap's were required here) my Cruise Control still wouldn't work. A simple worn rubber gasket was causing the problem. I fixed my Cruise Control and it cost me 5 cents and a piece of electrical tape. Thank you so much for the advice!!!
@william pirnat, I'm sorry that it cost you 5 times more than I had planned for it to, lol. In all seriousness though, I'm glad you were able to fix the problem and for 5 cents!!!!! Definitely better that $5k.
Thanks man you’re brilliant. Firstly I’d just like to say you sound exactly like Steve Carell lol ... Anyway I just bought an auto honda Frv with cruise control. The cruise control main power comes on but it wouldn’t allow me to set a speed. I bought the car anyway hoping to fix it as the car was so cheap. Seller told me that most likely the set switch button on the steering wheel just needed replacing. Had to drive 100 miles home with no cruise control. Anyway got home and intended to go about buying another control switch. After some research I found your video. I was very excited to try it as cruise control is really important for me. I went out at night and found the brake release switch but I saw that it was allowing the brake lights to work so I thought it can’t be a faulty brake release switch. I then attempted to remove the cruise control buttons from the steering wheel which was very fiddly but it wouldn’t come out. So I went back home and thought I’d read the comments to check for any tips. I then came across a comment talking about how the brake lights coming on doesn’t mean anything and the penny would still be required for cruise control. I thought ok great, some hope. The next morning nice and early I went under and taped a penny on to the brake lever. Went for a drive and cruise control worked perfectly! Brilliant. Your penny trick saved me alot of pounds. Now I can proceed to love the car. But one thing I would request, please write in the description that this trick would work even tho the brake lights work. Just to avoid confusion. Otherwise thanks for the help. I would happily donate £10 to you for this help if you have some kind of donation page. Honestly people like you deserve it for allowing us to avoid rip off mechanics
@kuruuun, thanks for the comment and suggestion. I've updated the video description to include the brake light suggestion. No need for donation, but thanks for thinking about it. I've just glad you were able to fix your problem for a penny :)
DIY Jeff thanks alot appreciated. Also has anyone ever told you how much you sound like Steve Carell or is it just me lol. Maybe because I’m from the UK
If your car has a manual transmission, the clutch pedal also has a switch because it cuts off cruise control when the clutch is pressed. So, check both switch locations.
Thank you a million! Who woulda thought it'd be this easy. This is why I love Hondas! I was thinking I'd be into electrical diagrams and troubleshooting. Turns out my rubber stopper was bad!
Arthell Strobles, thanks for subscribing. I'm interested in whether the gorilla glue will hold long term since it will be subjected to constant on/off pressure.
@@spencerlorrigan still working😁 totally forgot about this comment. But it still works. That gorilla glue is a fukn champ! Just use the brown one, the clear one is not as strong.
Dude! Thanks so much for this! I didn't have to tape a penny, because I didn't have an indent. I just had to pull up on the brake a little and it pressed the button better. Now it works thanks to you showing me this stupid little button! I feel like an idiot now. I even went so far as to replace the switch in the steering wheel, but that didn't fix it. Thanks a ton!
Just sayinf Thanks so Much for the Help! It really works. One thing to add. As he says "Use Black Electric Tape". It works better than duct tape or masking tape.
Completely different issue than my 07 Civic where the button's internal latch wont stay engaged. Came here thinking you just wedged a penny between the housing to keep the button on. Left here with my own idea to just super glue the button down and not worry about tearing off my steering wheel or hotwiring the cruise on. Thanks for not helping but lighting the fire of inginuity in me.
@Jacob Sorensen, glad I could help, lol. That happens a lot for me. Watch someone else’s video and come up with my own twist on it. I would suggest clear gorilla glue vs. super glue. Super glue will break down quicker over time.
Hey man I must say thank you for coming up with this special idea because earlier today I look at your video and I'm thinking would this work or not because I've been having problems with my cruise control so I did what you said with the penny and also the black tape and man it worked perfectly once again I thank you
christopher richardson, I'm glad it worked for you. It's a bit basic, but it works!!! If you find over time that the electrical tape loosens because of hot temperatures in the car, you could find a better tape, or just buy the little rubber piece that got indented. Auto Part stores carry them in 2 packs for $6-7.
This video helped but when I went to look a penny was already there lol. Turns out the button is adjustable. I untwisted the button then compressed it so is was all the way down when the break is off then locked it back into place. Hope this helps
@@DIYJeff could it also have been an aftermarket switch? i've read, elsewhere, that they need to be replaced sometimes; maybe some 3rd party ones are adjustable to account for different travel distances on different models/years.
I have a 2006 Accord that the cruise control failed on probably a couple years ago. The master toggle switch is embedded with the other buttons on the steering wheel, I replaced the pin in the brake pedal maybe 6 months ago when it literally cracked and fell out leaving my brake lights on until I replaced it but, as of yesterday still a non-functional cruise. Is the brake switch analog or digital meaning either a variable on condition or absolute on/off? If it's variable I'm wondering if I add my own 2 cents to the issue I might get my cruise back rather than tearing into the steering wheel.
@Adam Self, it's slightly variable. The pin is part of the problem, but the issue most experience is the rubber pad the pin pushes against depresses over time. An easy way to check if this is your problem is to drive at a speed that you can try to engage the cruise control. Before you engage it, use the tip of your shoe to pull up on the brake pedal (this pushes the pin farther into the depressed pad). While holding the pedal up with the tip of your shoe, engage the cruise control. If it comes on and then you let go of the pedal and it turns off, then a penny (or a new pad from the auto parts store) will fix it.
Here is a popular aftermarket pad : shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/dorman-help-brake-and-clutch-stop-pads-74015/22148619-P?searchTerm=Brake+Pedal+Stop+Pad
Lost Berserker that’s a shame :\ It’s actually really useful for when your foot is tired or if there’s a cruiser on the road you’re on and you don’t want to have to worry about going the speed limit
Great video thank you, just have one question i have CRV gen 2 jiw to rich to that brake pin space,do i have to remove the plastic under the steering wheel? thank you in advance

Once in the correct position, just turn it clockwise to lock it in place.
vettepwr23, thanks for sharing your tip. That's great information.
Yeah I know thanks we have a penny calibrate this adjust this get your own feed your own video
Thank you!!
Juan Galeano, I'm glad the video helped you get your cruise control working again. That's the great thing about RUclips!
Thanks for the video I have been having trouble trying to figure out why my brake lights would stay on too and this seems to have fixed both of those problems
I used this penny method to fix the cruise control on an '02 Civic. Thank you for sharing!
Glad it helped!
It was the switch on my clutch that the rubber bumper was missing, Thank you so much.
John Dozier, sometimes the most satisfying DIY is the kind that is quick easy and only costs a penny. Glad it worked for you.
Hi, thanks for the fix! I wanted to let the viewers know that the brake light switch is adjustable. A slight adjustment to eliminate the slack and my cruise control works again!!!
@Patrick Morgan, thanks for the tip.
Massive thanks bro I have been troubleshooting my 1990 integra cruise control for weeks and this fixed it instantly! I went for the more expensive part and used a nickel with superglue, just to make sure. Once again, thank you so much!
@Broke Boi, you’re welcome, it cost you five times as much and was still a cheap fix, lol.
Thanks Jeff for your insight. Worked like a charm!
That’s great to hear!
@Babe Salt, that's good to know. Thank you for sharing with everyone.
You're a smart guy Jeff. Thanks fir the video brother.
@Daniel Potyok, you’re welcome!
@@DIYJeff and a quick reply. You're a top notch content creator brother. I'll subscribe just for that. Keep up the good work.
@ Daniel Potyok, thank you, much appreciated.
Thank you a million! Who woulda thought it'd be this easy. This is why I love Hondas! I was thinking I'd be into electrical diagrams and troubleshooting. Turns out my rubber stopper was bad!
Jason Ricci, sometimes there are just simple fixes in life :)
@@DIYJeff not all heroes wear capes and you my friend are my hero
Got my 95 Del Sol Si to work!!!! Bless you🍻 I took the tape off and gorilla glued the penny for a more permanent fix. Slapped the SUB button👍🏿👍🏿
Arthell Strobles, thanks for subscribing. I'm interested in whether the gorilla glue will hold long term since it will be subjected to constant on/off pressure.
@@DIYJeff will do, ill keep you posted with a year review from now. Thanks for saving me $$$
@@arthellstrobles1241 alright, times up what's the update
@@spencerlorrigan still working😁 totally forgot about this comment. But it still works. That gorilla glue is a fukn champ! Just use the brown one, the clear one is not as strong.
@@arthellstrobles1241 Thanks! I might be doing this on my car today.
Thank you … excellent idea for troubleshooting cruise control
100000000% my issue. Holy shit I searched all over for an explanation. Thanks man.
You're welcome!
2002 Honda crv fixed with a penny. Thank you so much
thanks for the tip. its the same for the clutch pedal, my clutch pedal was missing the pad. now its fixed.
@david phillips, that's good to know. Thanks for sharing.
It looks as though this resolved my issue. TYSM!!
That totally fixed my problem. My long drives to my dad's house thank you.
Aaron Bradbury, you're welcome. I'm glad the video was helpful.
Fixed my MDX 2001. Used 14mm wrench to adjust the position instead of adding a spacer. But without this video would not know what to do. Thx
Windsurfing Hydrofoil, thanks for sharing your fix.
Very helpful, thanks Jeff.
I love it! Can't wait to try it this weekend. Thanks Jeff!
@RM Mccarthy, hope it works for you
Thanks buddy it worked on my 2011 Honda Pilot...
@Antonio Martinez, you're welcome!
Just sayinf Thanks so Much for the Help! It really works. One thing to add. As he says "Use Black Electric Tape". It works better than duct tape or masking tape.
@william charnow, it's the little things in life that bring such great joy!
Thanks man. It worked on my 1994 acura integra Ls model. 5spd. Put a penny and tape on the brake and clutch pin.
iamlegend , easy fix for such an important features long drives. I’m glad this worked for you.
@@DIYJeff exactly man. Appreciate the video man.
The is another on of there on the clutch if you have an EX, so check that one as well
Thanks buddy. This tip worked on my 99 Acura CL.
Lj Viper, glad this worked for you!
This worked for me, Honda City 2014, Had to do similar for both the clutch and brake pedals.
Thank you very much my friend!😊👍🏼🏴
@Hank Martin 1961, you’re welcome.
This video helped but when I went to look a penny was already there lol. Turns out the button is adjustable. I untwisted the button then compressed it so is was all the way down when the break is off then locked it back into place.
Hope this helps
Nebuchadnezzar, interesting. What model and year did you do this on? The one on my 2004 Honda Odyssey was not adjustable.
@@DIYJeff could it also have been an aftermarket switch? i've read, elsewhere, that they need to be replaced sometimes; maybe some 3rd party ones are adjustable to account for different travel distances on different models/years.
Sheridan McPheeters , it’s possible. If you don’t want to go the penny route, every auto parts store sells the replacement pads for a few dollars.
@@DIYJeff 2001 Civic manual trans has an adjustable switch on the clutch pedal
Holy it fixed my civic lol. Thanks!!!
This tip really works.
I just changed the rubber piece thanks for the video
Glad it helped
Is there an OEM part number for replacing the brake pad rubber stop (instead of using a penny)? Thanks!
Here is a popular aftermarket pad : shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/dorman-help-brake-and-clutch-stop-pads-74015/22148619-P?searchTerm=Brake+Pedal+Stop+Pad
Fixed my cruise control with this. My parents bought me the car because it didn't have cruise control and now it does lol
Lost Berserker, awesome! Glad you were able to get it fixed!
Life hack that actually works
Why didn't they want you to have cruise control? Mine hated it when i used cruise control and i never understood why :/
@@TheGozeraye they believe it to be a luxury and since they drive without cruise control they think I should to
Lost Berserker that’s a shame :\ It’s actually really useful for when your foot is tired or if there’s a cruiser on the road you’re on and you don’t want to have to worry about going the speed limit
Not sure yet if this is my problem, but if it is I think I'll use a bit more tape. that looked pretty loose. Good idea though
The penny method will get you through a tight spot but please fix it right as soon as you can.
I'm going to try this! Thank you. My light doesn't come on though is the only difference. Hmmm
There’s an outside chance your cruise control light is burned out.
You are so smart!!! Really though....thanks a million.
