The story of Manjulika is largely a part of Bengali legends. And according to these tales, she was an elegant Bengali dancer who came from a very poor family & was kidnapped from her country and taken to what is now India, where she learned Hindi and met Shashidhar. Manjulika was a real life Bengali woman. She was a dancer at a Non-Bengali king, Raja Vibhuti Narayan's court. She was very beautiful. Like many other men, the king was in love with her. But she rejected everyone just for her lover Shashidhar who also danced at the king's court. Once, the king made a beautiful painting of Manjulika, gifted it to her and proposed her for marriage. But she refused. Her pure love for Shashidhar, who was just a dancer, even made her reject a king! The king was already heartbroken. Meanwhile, she tried to elope with Shashidhar, but was caught red-handed. During their last performance, when both bowed their heads to salute the king as per the rule, the king beheaded Shashidhar which shocked Manjulika. She was locked in a room and the king was making arrangements for marriage. But to his utter disappointment, when he opened the door of that room, he found Manjulika dead. She hanged herself and committed suicide. A letter was found in her hand in which she wrote that she would take revenge from the king. After a few days, the king died mysteriously. It is believed that Manjulika's ghost killed the king. I found this story very romantic as well as tragic and I think a movie should be made on this lovestory. I know this story has already been shown in bhool bhulaiya film but there, the story is not main, adventure and secrets are main. A movie solely based on the lovestory would be great. I found the plot of Jubin nautiyal's recent music video “Dotara” kinda similar to this lovestory though the main line of this song is “Sundori Koma Nache” ( meaning- Beautiful Komola dances. Komola was also a real life dancer of Bengal who played vital role in the development of Bengali classical dance known as Gaudiya Nritya. She was married to a Kashmiri King named Jayapir).
